Rocket your absolutely right, Penn State had no problem with Oregon State. They have a great chance at the NC game. Just to early to tell.

I could see them only falling to 5, however I feel they should fall to atleast 6 or 7'th. It's not like they lost to another 3-0 team, or even a 2-1 team. They lost to a team that got THUMPED, by another team that's not even in the top 10.

They should not be ranked ahead of Oklahoma, Florida, GA, or LSU. I think most would agree with that.

 

However, after this weekend, one of those 4 may not be undefeated still.

This loss doesn't end USC's title dreams...what it did was take them out of the driver's seat. There's still a lot of football to be played, and if last year and last night showed us anything, it's that you never know what's going to happen from week-to-week in college football.

 

As usual, USC is loaded with talent...but, as usual, they get anointed as unbeatable before it's actually proven. It's unlikely anybody outside of Oklahoma has decent odds to run the table. And, not only are the odds against an SEC team going undefeated, but it may be hard to get out of that conference with just one loss. All the Trojans can do now is continue to work and get better and try to win the rest of their games and let the chips fall where they may.

 

I expect to see several more upsets before the season is over and I'd be surprised if the Trojans aren't involved in another tough game or two. It's just hard to bring a high level of intensity and play every single week...and that makes it even tougher when every team you play treats their game against you as their biggest of the season.

 

And, one last thought, I didn't understand all the love for Mark Sanchez this early in the season. He hasn't impressed me that much as a drop-back pocket passer...his best plays come when he scrambles and creates, and sometimes that comes back to bite you. The guy has a lot of talent and should get better and better with more experience, but his game is far from flawless.

 

USC will be fine though...if you're gonna lose, do it early.

Does this insure that a one loss SEC team gets in the National Championship game?

 

It's far from a certainty that the SEC will even have a team with just one loss...assuming it does play out that way and the loss comes against another highly rated teams...example, should Georgia lose to 'Bama this weekend and that be their only loss. There's no way you could justify choosing USC over them, IMO.

 

However, there are a few more teams that need to lose before we start talking about one-loss teams, I think.

And for the record, Jim Schue is no where near an SEC fan ref. He's for UofL, and generally hates the SEC.

I mean last year they lost to Stanford, yet if they just won their last game of the year they would have still made the title game. They are not in the drivers seat anymore, but with how college football is, if you lose early you still have a shot. So they very well could just jump over someone at the end of the year who loses their first game even if its to a good team. It wouldn't be right, but that is how it works in college football. That is why college football has the worst system for crowning a champion.

They should fall even farther, to maybe 9 or 10. They lost to a team that was 1-2 and that had been beaten like a drum at Penn State. USC has to prove that they deserved that high early pre-season ranking. It wouldn't surprise me if they have another in conference loss along the way. They should drop to at least 9 or 10 IMO.

I'd be surprised if any BCS conference team besides Oklahoma finished undefeated. And, to take it a step further, I'm not sure how many one loss teams there will be when the dust settles. It's going to be really hard for anyone in the SEC to make it through with just one loss, much less undefeated.

 

Its still way too early to speculate on January, because a lot is going to happen before then. However, we still like to do it and it brings up an interesting scenario that no one has mentioned. Texas seems to be flying under the radar at #7...what if they lose a close game @ OU in two weeks and that's their only loss. OU goes on to win the conference title game...could we possibly see our first BCS Title game with two teams from the same conference? It nearly happened with OSU and Michigan.
