Isn't that just having good business sense? They're forecasting and adjusting prices appropriately. This happens in every business sector around the world. Why would the oil industry be any different? Should it be different?

 

 

I realize my opinion isn't a popular one, nor do I expect it to be. I just have a hard time placing the blame on the oil companies themselves, when it is others who have given them this power. The oil companies are just doing business.

How much of that oil in the gulf are WE actually seeing anyway ? I've always been under the impression alot of that oil is exported. Of course if it is we Americans still would foot the cost for the other countries.:rolleyes: Oil will shoot up 1.00 - 2.00 on the gallon overnight and then will drop .02 - .03 a week after that.

I said yes, but they shouldn't be rising to the extremes which they have I don't think. I can understand 30-40 cents, but any thing over that is probably not necessary and definitely the prices should drop off within a week or two unless extensive damage is done to the refineries.

Big oil has been screwing America long before this hurricane. We were paying 3.85 just a week ago with 102 dollar oil.

 

And for decades now there has been a cry for an alternative fuel. People ignored that voice, until it started coming from their pocket...

The oil companies report making billions of dollars in profit so how is that possible when they cry gas shortages.

IMO there is no crime in making a profit, but making excessive profits on the backs of hard working Americans is indeed wrong! Please the American Oil industry is milking the American public dry and telling them it's OPEC that are the bad guy's, to put more and green in their pockets! Indeed making a profit is the American way, and it is indeed a very good thing, but excessive profits are just wrong, wrong, wrong! BTW wasn't it the oil industry that had to be broken up years and years ago by the Federal Government because of a monopoly by Standard Oil?

It sounds like your issue is with the government and not the oil companies. And rightfully so.

I say stick it to them where it hurts. While not an expert in this area I'm not even sure this could be done. But with that said, the Attonry General should file suit against the wholesale distributors for anti trust action. Seems to me that is what everyone says, there is one by whole sale distributor in the area and thats where the price is coming from. Bust that up then fine the crap out of people that are raising prices over a dollar in a 24 hour period. The fine they receive for gouging though is a joke. Herald said it is just 5 grand for a first time offense. They will make way more than 5 grand profit with the amount they have raised prices, so it won't bother them all that badly.

Big oil has Americans in their back pocket. We will not make changes and they know we'll keep using gas. It's like boiling a frog. Put a frog in boiling water and and he'll jump out, but if you put him in and raise the temperature gradually he'll boil and be dead. Gas keeps raising gradually and we keep buying.

I can't help but wonder how one defines "price gouging." All of the immediate increase in the price - before the storm even hit - had nothing to do with actual cost borne by the suppliers. I mean, just like always, the price increases were purely speculative based on a belief (and usually an exaggeration) that costs of oil will be going up some unknown amount at some time in the near future. So all of it is guesswork and nothing really concrete on which to base an increase. Frankly, since the suppliers haven't yet borne any increases on their end, isn't any price increase gouging? At what point is the increase in prices at the station reasonable based upon future expectations of their increased oil costs and how do you define when they have crossed a line into the "gouging" area?
