I can't help but wonder how one defines "price gouging." All of the immediate increase in the price - before the storm even hit - had nothing to do with actual cost borne by the suppliers. I mean, just like always, the price increases were purely speculative based on a belief (and usually an exaggeration) that costs of oil will be going up some unknown amount at some time in the near future. So all of it is guesswork and nothing really concrete on which to base an increase. Frankly, since the suppliers haven't yet borne any increases on their end, isn't any price increase gouging? At what point is the increase in prices at the station reasonable based upon future expectations of their increased oil costs and how do you define when they have crossed a line into the "gouging" area?

 

For me when they have crossed a line into the "gouging" area is when the national average is $3.84 and I pay anything over it. Having said that most of the stations that I've passed are over $4.00 a very few are selling at $3.99.

The question posed was regarding price gouging. Yes I do realize its the national average. If anything I feel what I pay should be alot less than those who don't live within a stone's throw of a refinery. It makes NO sense when I travel to Lexington for instance and its 5 to 10 cents cheaper on the gallon than anything in the Ashland area.:confused:

Every station in Henderson is selling for $4.19 and we are usually below the average. One station this weekend was selling for $4.69.

Fly out of Louisville or Dayton, OH. They have no competition in NKY, been like that for as long as I have known.

 

Oil is down to what 94 dollars now... so after this hurricane is cleaned up we should see a 1.50 drop in gas, which is probably wishful thinking, I doubt oil and independent owners let that happen.

Every station I passed today and yesterday was set at 3.99.9 never have I witnessed every station having the same price.

When I got back to Henderson yesterday afternoon every station but two was $3.99. The Swiftys was at $4.19 and another was at $4.59 with all but two pumps being used.

We'll see what happens the next week. Should seriously see a big drop at the pump unless something news worthy happens. Oils dropped around $60.00 a barel since July's high, and the value of the dollar is actually on the rise right now.

Big oil has been screwing America long before this hurricane. We were paying 3.85 just a week ago with 102 dollar oil.

The oil companies report making billions of dollars in profit so how is that possible when they cry gas shortages.

 

Big oil has Americans in their back pocket. We will not make changes and they know we'll keep using gas. It's like boiling a frog. Put a frog in boiling water and and he'll jump out, but if you put him in and raise the temperature gradually he'll boil and be dead. Gas keeps raising gradually and we keep buying.

I was right there until it jumped .20 over night and hasn't really come back down even though oil continues to fall. I don't have a problem with oil companies making money but the jump over Thanksgiving was not justified.
