Highlands/Colerain, OH Predictions

Featured Replies

All these years we've been told that HHS can never match up to a big OHIO school. Well, last year we didn't match up, speed or size wise to that OHIO school we played and we handed that team with 8 Div. 1 picks on it a loss. I am just not listening to the can'ts anymore. Stop saying that we can't and let start believing in our positives. We do have speed, we do have a talented defense, (last time I checked, if the other team doesn't score, they can't win). I just would love to see a fired up Birds team on Friday night come out and start on defense, force a 3 and out, and then pin your ears back on offense and open up the play book for all those plays we DIDN'T see against Ryle. I truly believe that every team is beatable. Those boys have been getting their heads filled all week about how this is just another bump in the road for their tough Ohio schedule. I am also sure that if they are anything like us, that Guidugli quote from the paper stating that HHS can beat them is plastered all over every door, locker, urinal, weight room wall, and hallway in that school. They have a lot more to prove and to lose in this game. Highlands has nothing to lose since most peoples' expectations are so low.

I remember one time when I was little and my neighbor Davey had this pet bird. I kept sticking my finger near the cage and he kept telling me that I should stop because one day it may bite me. I asked him if it had ever bit anyone before, and he said no. So days went on with the torment of sticking my finger in there trying to get a reaction and one day catching me off guard, that little birdie took a good nibble. My friend told me "I told you one day if you keep messing with that bird he's gonna bite ya."

The moral of the story is, if you keep sticking your perverbial finger in the bird cage to try and score some easy points for your Ohio scoring system, someday, you may get bitten. Just ask Trotwood Madison about that.

P.S. I have to say I am disgusted at the number of people who are claiming to be Birds fans and didn't pick them on the NKY Week 2 challenge. Shame on you!

I love the way you think. And you can bet that if we pull it off, No. 21 will be high fiving No. 33 big time. :thumb::thumb:

That will be thunderous for sure!

No, the real irony of the story is that Colerain's home field has a nickname...the Bird Cage! :thumb:

PS: We're not Trotwood Madison...we don't need to ask them anything. :irked:

I'll say...

Colerain 34

Highlands 20

Good luck Bluebirds...

I don't think I can wisely make a prediction in this game. Of course my heart says Birds win, but playing a team ranked by some to the the best team in the country with phenomenal athletes and fantastic coaches that has already beaten St. X and a very good Pa. team tempers that feeling. I agree with Cardinals Fan that Colerain is in a whole different league than Trotwood.

What makes this game hard to predict is the lack of experience on both teams. As Cardinals Fan has pointed out, Colerain plays an unusually large amount of sophomores and juniors. The Birds play a lot of first year starting juniors and counts on some sophomores for key playing time. Heck, some of our seniors are first year starters too. Bottom line is that there is a lot of newbies on each side of the ball. And young, inexperienced players are unpredictable and inconsistent. What looked great one week, looks bad the next week, and vice versa. I think we can win if our newbies are on and their newbies are off. Regardless of the outcome, the opportunity to play against athletes the caliber of Colerain's will really help prepare our young players for the rest of our schedule. We come out of this healthy and this game is a win for the Birds regardless of the score. I feel the same way about CovCath's beating last week. I know it was painful for the fans, the players and the coaches, but unless the loss "breaks" the players spirit (which it didn't I'm sure; we're talking about CovCath folks) that loss showed the kids and coaches a lot of things that will make them better as the year progresses. Go Birds.

Your "finger in the birdcage" story is cute ... but for some reason ... I would like to hope that the coaches at Colerain are smart enough to stress the fact that this isn't going to be a "bump in the road". (Wishful thinking on your part is what that sounds like .. but I could be wrong there).

With that said ... you don't get to be Colerain by losing to teams that you should beat (kind of like Highlands?). I would also have to wonder .. if people from Colerain read this ... don't you think that they are going to get the same thing from your post as you are getting from the people who think that The Cole'Train is going to roll?

It also sounds like you are comparing Trotwood to Colerain .... hmmm ... I understand what you are going for there. But I think that we all know how undisciplined they were--not to mention the fact that they didn't buy into the team concept very well. The difference here .. is that Colerain has similar athletes ... but they play as a team .... and they play real defense. It may seem like an apples to apples comparison ... but it is more like oranges to tangerines.

Regardless ... I admire your optimism. There isn't anything wrong with that.

Here is to a safe game for both teams on Friday.

Very well put. That has been my whole point from the beginning. When you have as many young and inexperienced starters as these two teams have, anything is possible. The advantages Colerain may have can be easily lost if their young 'uns don't perform at the level of which they are capable.

Can someone (preferably a Highlands expert) give me a real high level breakdown of the following aspects of the team through 2 weeks:

  • Offense: Key players, Grade level, position, etc. as well as offensive tendencies
  • Defense: Key players, similar to offensive breakdown, key attributes (speed, tackling ability, etc.)
  • Special Teams

I am working on one for Colerain and will post when complete. Hopefully sometime today.

Thanks,

-CardinalsFan

Highlands on offense will field 11 players. As far as tendencies they usually either pass the ball or run the ball.

Defense: They again field 11 players. Tendencies: they try to stop the other team from gaining a 1st down in an effort to get the ball back.

Special Teams. They will punt on 4th down if not close enough to attempt a FG. They will kick off at the start of one of the halves, and after any scores.

When recieving punts or kicks, they try to catch it 1st and then advance it as far as they can.

To my fellow HHS rooters I hope I have not divulged to much information to the enemy.:D

Getting a little snippy aren't we??? I know that Colerain is a much better coached, and much more team oriented program that Trotwood would ever be. The thing is, we played a big talented OHIO team and won. Colerain is a big talented Ohio team. I just have this feeling in my gut that HHS wont lay down on this one. I truly believe that our Birds are being underestimated. I am also a very proud and biased fan of Highlands football. I have been since my first game I went to as a kid and they just won region and a Birds player gave me his chin strap right off his helmet. I lost it over the years, but to me that is what began my motivation to eventually play Highlands football. I have never stopped being fanatical about any other team or sport as much as I am about the Birds.

So, CF, I know that most of what you are saying may be on the defense since you don't have many supporters on this thread, but it's ok. We know you all have an outstanding team and it's an honor to share the field with them. But, since we're there, we may as well take a crack at beating No. 1!!!!

You just made L'neck very happy! :thumb:

Indeed. :D
