Don't many alcoholics start out with beer? I know many alcoholics who just like you describe the potheads.

Don't fall back on "its illegal." That would make for a short discussion. Why is it illegal? Are you OK with me drinking until I'm drunk as long as I don't harm anyone or get behind the wheel? I'm not going anywhere. I'm just going to sleep it off on my couch.

I'm not saying that I don't understand your argument, but what are you trying to prove? No one on here can magically change the law. We have to live with it.

I'm okay with drinking as long as people aren't an idiot about it, just as I'm okay with pot as long as people aren't an idiot about it. I'm just saying, most of the potheads I've known have virtually ruined their lives. That's MY experience, it may not be yours, and it may not be that of the majority of people.

I don't allow you to do anything.

Our government says you can drink alcohol, but can't smoke weed. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but every pothead I've known is nothing but a waste now. Most of them moved on to harder drugs.

You must not know many; there are lots of respectable professional people who do little more than an occasional or even a daily joint, the same way a white collar worker might unwind after work with a martini or a blue collar joe knocks back a beer or two. It only becomes a gateway drug if the user doesn't have the self-discipline to keep it from escalating. It's just as fallacious an argument as those who suggest one drink makes you an alcoholic.

I don't allow you to do anything.

Our government says you can't. I'm not trying to say whether it's harmful or not, but every pothead I've known is nothing but a waste now.

Ands thats the common stereotype.

I'd love for people to know some of the people I know, who are highly successful in life, live great lives, own luxurious homes, have great friends, and great respect, but still smoke marijuana. The sad thing about that is, if 80% of people knew that then they would not be respected the way they were right now without people knowing.

Marijuana is one of the most misconscrewed subjects out there. I am not condoning in any way, but I just hate to see something blasted and discredited on things that aren't even true. Studies on going since the 60's have shown there is zero long term health risks associated with marijuana. As well as has shown that marijuana's uses in the good sense in compared to a non useful since are 10-1. Furthermore, this Country, the same country we live in today was practically founded on the hemp plant, and George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both in personal memoirs would remark about each others trading of smoke from the Indian Hemp seed. Furthermore, this was not even an issue in this country until prohibition (when people decided alcohol was bad as well and banned it) and the great depression. When the great depression struck many immigrants obtained the jobs of many southwesterners who were American. Many of these immigrants smoked marijuana, as a way to get them out of the country and preserve jobs of the American citizens, the first marijuana laws were passed, and passed very harshly sending people to jail in some cases for life just for possession of a joint. Following this, in the thirties, the reefer madness campaign came out which was propaganda used to scare people away from marijuana and basically brainwashing an entire country that something most did not know anything about that is was the devil in disguise. Not knowing any better, not knowing any facts, the people in the thirties believed the lies, now that is why it is common place that marijuana is so hated against. What I hate the most though is how people mainly go on here say, without knowing any facts, or try to supply bogus facts as to why something is so horrible, when in all reality could possible be one of the most beneficial plants on the planet. In many countries and religions, cannabis is a sacred plant, however, in America people still tend to listen to others views who are incorrect compared to even opening up to some of the facts that have now came out about marijuana.

Again like I said, not condoning, BUT, I just hate to see people go on about an issue, and tear someone to pieces, when every argument they have is bogus when compared to the factual truth. If you want to talk about the dangers and risks associated with even opium, opiates, heroin, cocaine, lsd, even alcohol I will be right with you in backing up while those are so harmful. For marijuana though, all I can say is that it is the most discredited and wronged object in this world. Facts are now there to prove it.

Pot is much worse. The effects are broader and much more severe.

So you're against me getting high because of my health? That's the only reason?

I don't allow you to do anything.

Being a "pothead" is a little different than a "social smoker". Most potheads are abusers of something or another from the start, and are likely to be similarly abusing cigerettes and alcohol.

What I call a 'social smoker' would be leaning a little more towards what Clyde seems to be getting at, but social smokers don't usually smoke alone.

It's all about responsibility and moderation. There is no reason IMO marijuana should be illegal considering alcohol is much more harmful. I've said it a thousand times: legalize it, and put restrictions on it similar to alcohol.

We call American the land of the free, yet a person can go to jail because they have a little weed on them? I'm not trying to sound unpatriotic here, but that sounds very much NOT what freedom is about.

It's absolutely true. The chemicals in marijuana have been proven to cause permanent brain damage.

False. Studies have in fact proven no long term health risks associated with marijuana.

Alcohol takes the life of around 100,000 people each year last I heard. Can you say the same for marijuana?

Why should I not be able to get high in my own house as long as I never leave the house and endanger others? Yes, I know its illegal but I'm ignoring that. What harm am I doing anyone? Who am I endangering?

Other than cancer...which you can get from smoking anything.

OK. You will agree that teens consume alcohol, correct? Arent they getting it from the same store I buy my beer? My point is that whether its alcohol or drugs, if a teen wants them they will get them. Can we agree that accessibility of drugs for kids is no greater than it is for alcohol? If so, who am I really harming? Why can't I enjoy my weed, eat Doritos , and watch movies?

Well then it sure sounds like you're going to be a bum living on welfare, which certainly has a huge effect on a lot of people.

I think it depends on how much marijuana you have on you, but if you just have a joint, I believe in many states that is just a misdemeanor. I could be wrong though.

Like the whino?

You are padding the pockets of the drug dealer who supplies you your drugs, allowing him to buy even more drugs such as cocaine, which he in return sells to some young kids, who in turn overdose and die. Therefore you are endangering the lives of many. :D

This is the best argument and there isn't any way of going around it.

I noticed it was compared to an alcohol store.

I mean are you seriously comparing a liquor store to a drug dealer's house?

If so then this conversation is pathetic.

I'm guessing you are playing a little bit of a devils advocat here also, maybe not but since you (Clyde) are asking us what is wrong with it, do you not feel that feeding a drug dealer is wrong? Please do not compare it with another place, just yes or no?
