There are a lot more 1A schools that challenge quality competition in the state then what we have here in the mountains. Belfry and Breathitt are smaller schools that could challenge anyone (I think). I guess that it my problem that a lot of times when I talk or think football I just think of the mountain teams and don't even relate to other areas of the state. I'm thinking that is because I couldn't tell you a thing about State Champions even last year unless they were a mountain team or close. I just can't buy into the fact that just because a team has so many players that they are automatically better than a smaller program. You can still put the same number of players on the field and if they are good they play both sides of the ball, so I really don't see it except for the argument that you have more to pick from, but still it is the same number on the field as the other team. I could talk about this for days, but we have a ballgame to get excited about. Go BEARS!!!!

 

 

 

Depth in football is huge in whatever level, that is the main reason coaches spend so much time in practice trying to develop quality depth in all areas, is to keep everyone fresh when you have fresh sets of legs the fourth quarter can become much eaiser for teams that are fortunate to have it.

Even in Boyle County's (now a 4A school) prime under Chuck Smith, 1A Danville always gave them one of their toughest games of the season and even pulled off a couple victories.

 

Speaking of Danville, the Admirals defeated 5A Pulaski Southwestern, 4A Boyle County, and 6A Clark County

 

1A Beechwood defeated a pretty daggone good 5A Dixie Heights last year

 

1A Hazard defeated this same 5A Letcher Central 43-22 last season

 

1A Pikeville defeated 5A Ashland on the road

 

1A Bardstown defeated 6A Nelson County

Lcc must play better defense than shown at Breathitt Co. HCHS will play with emotion.Can they garner it and use it to their benefit? LCC is proven and HCHS is an unknown entity. LCC has home field advantage and it will be hot on the turf. Conditioning will play a large part in the outcome since it will be a close encounter.

I agree the cream of 1A can compete against the middle of the road, but I'll give you Somerset for example...In 2005 or 06 THEY WERE VERY GOOD, but lost to mid to upper teams in classes above them, (I believe 0-4). Beechwood can beat anyone on any given night. Hazard (this year) can beat anyone on any given night, Pikeville (most years can compete or beat most in 3-4A) on any given night, Don't know Bardstown, so I can't comment. What I am saying is that only Cumberland in 82,83, 86, & 91, Evarts (Scott Russell's Senior year), and Cawood (81,82 &maybe early 90's) are teams from Harlan County that understand how to compete against major competition in bigger classes. I think HCHS wll win this game...but they will have to play very well. Poor execution of the kicking game and turnovers will loom large if it happens.

 

By the way, how many State Titles does Danville have? They should be able to compete.

I had heard that they were going to be running a shuttle from a local restaurant up to the football field because they expect a HUGE crowd. I know that this is as excited as I have been for a high school football game in a long time.

In 2005 Somerset played two schools above their class. They defeated 3A Pulaski County 42-19 and 3A Warren East 35-7.
