Yep! It was the mid to late seventies. Ask someone who has lived there----say about 40 years! :eek:

Only time I have ever witnessed anything close to a traffic jam in Sandy Hook is right after the basketball games. Tells you where the priority right now is in Elliott County. It's the current game and then the next game and then the one after that................

I grew up in Elliott Co. and can atest to the fact that at one time (I think it early to mid seventies) a red light was at the intersection of state routes 32 and 7. I was fairly young at the time, but I remember that it only stayed up for a few months before being removed. Apparently someone kept shooting the individual lights out of it and the state got tired of repairing it, so they took it down.

I remember a temporary light being in place during a road construction/improvement process, but will stand by my statement of there being no traffic light in Sandy Hook.

I do agree that there is not a traffic light in Elliott Co. at this time, unless ther is some construction requiring a temporary light going on. There have been occasional temporary lights as you say for road contruction projects. The light that I mentioned in my previous thread was placed as a permanent light about 35 to 40 years ago, but was taken down after a few months for the reasons I stated.

Owsley County has no stop lights, no national franchise fast food chain restaurants such as Subway, McDonalds, Wendy's,etc (we've never had one in our county's history to my knowledge, which dates back to 1844), only locally owned restaurants ... one grocery store, three gas stations/mini marts, all located in Booneville.

 

If you want peace and quite visit our little mountain county, population 4600.

 

And while you're here come play our brand new golf course, Sag Hollow. I'm sorry, I had to get that plug in.

My hubby grew up there too . . . and frequently tells me about the once installed traffic light and how it didn't last long "in these parts". Of course . . . he also tells me about his first and only trip to jail as he and MANY OTHERS were just hanging out on the bridge on Saturday night!!!:lol:

Maybe your just too young!! Ask the old timers about it and I'm sure you'll have an enjoyable afternoon listening to all the stories.:thumb:

We got a Druthers. AFTER I had graduated and went away to college.

Nope. Never have had any fast food chains in our county's history. Beattyville in Lee County has a Dairy Queen and a Subway. That's 10 miles from our county seat, and the closest of fast food chains to us.

 

We do have the locally owned Spencer's Dairy Bar which serves some great burgers/fries as well as shakes and sundaes. They've been in business since 1948. And we have one sit-down restaurant which serves good ol' country eating. Other than that we have a couple of gas station/mini marts that serve pizza and chicken. That's about it, unless you want to get a sandwich made at the one grocery store in town.

How does a one-time occurrence qualify as "consistently?" You can probably count on one hand the number of impact transfers into GCHS over the past 50 years.

 

Amen. It's surely nothing compared to the number of people moving to Georgetown.

 

Although, in all seriousness, I think Gallatin County has/will become more "attractive" to some people. With new school facilities, starting football a few years ago, and having some success in both boys and girls basketball in the past 10 years (thanks Coach Perkins and Coach Jones!), those people looking/finding work on the US 42 corridor, can now consider somewhere else other than just Carroll County.

Downtown Mt. Olivet has a flashing 4 way stop light in the center of town right next to the Integra Bank that was robbed by the blue eyed bandit. They once had a old fashioned stop light that changed colors but that was replaced many years ago.

 

That is a caution light at a 4-way stop. I referring to the fact that there is no stop light in the entire county.
