Vice President Dick Cheney's comments

Featured Replies

I very seldom venture into this forum, so I apoligize if this has already been posted. What are everyone's thoughts on Cheney's comments?

Vice President Dick Cheney Monday made a familiar joke about people who live in West Virginia while speaking to the National Press Club in Washington D.C.

Cheney was explaining how he is a distant cousin to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

"We'd always known about the Cheney family line on my father's side of the family, back to Massachusetts in the 1630s. My grandmother was named Tyler but it turned out she was descended from a Richard Cheney, same last name, who landed in Maryland in the 1650s," Vice President Cheney said. "So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family -- and we don't even live in West Virginia. You can say those things when you're not running for re-election."

Its a common in-breeding joke. He could have substituted Kentucky, Arkansas, or Mississippi.

Senator McCain should demand that Cheney apologize immediately and Cheney should oblige.

I honestly believe that the people of West Virginia and eastern Kentucky invite jokes like this by tolerating them and holding Hillbilly festivals. You cannot exploit the Hillbilly image for tourism's sake and make Dukes of Hazzard reruns among your top rated TV shows and expect much respect from people outside the area.

If a few thousand West Virginians marched in Washington, politicians would not feel safe making jokes like this one. It has never happened and I do not expect it to happen this time. Instead Jay Rockefeller will knock fellow senators out of the way to be the first to condemn Cheney's comment (Sen. Byrd is ailing).

Not particularly PC, but pretty funny none the less. Even funnier since he didn't use Ky instead. :D

Goodness sakes this is our Vice President stating such a negative statement about West Virginians which could have been Kentuckians. In the political climate we live in I don't care if your Republican, Democrat, or Independent to make such a comment about any state when you are the sitting Vice President is tasteless and not funny just a sad attempt(at the expense of West Virginians) at a joke.

I realize Cheney will be out of office soon...I think maybe he should steer clear of trying to be a comedian. Clearly NOT the Last Comic Standing.:scared:

I have heard that on all of those along with some others used in that joke. I am not or cannot defend Cheny on this one at all.

No way should he have said that. Yes, I laughed but for the vice president of the United Sates to say something like that about ANY state wa just plain stupid on his part.

:thumb: I agree, it really makes one wonder if he was drunk.

That statement coming from a vice president or any other elected official for that matter was just (like I said)....Stupid.

Have you ever been to West Virginia?

You shouldn't have said it but it was very funny and I can see where people may get upset.

A man in his position should not have made such a comment.

Although, he is quite hilarious.

Cheney shouldn't have said it, but like many comments that have been threads on BGP for the last few months, it really doesn't war much attention. Other than a passing "that's a shame"

It was a joke in bad taste, he should apoligize but if you speak in public long enough your going to goof on a joke everyonce in a while!

Agree, but people like Cheney don't care.

I also think the media does their part to perpetuate these hillbilly stereotypes. Everytime the national media comes to Eastern Kentucky, who winds up being interviewed?

I'd have voted for Cheney in a heartbeat for president, even if he is a bit sinister.
