Eta Rho Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I know this year isn't over yet, but not much for 9th region fans to talk about except for Holmes, so I thought I'd start a thread to see what everyone returns next year and who should be the teams to watch. Who are the key players returning? Who are up and coming underclassmen who will make a difference? What will be the key for your team to make a post season run?

I think the 9th will be down overall next year. I thought it was down this year. It will be down further next season.

statmanhensley Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I don't really care who is the best team next year or who wins the regional tournament, but I'm more excited that the regional tournament will be at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. Should be quite fun!!!

Sr's: Maile, Shover, Isler, Ives, Sorrell, Counts- Isler, Counts, and Maile, while not very tall, are very physical inside. The junior class is very deep but they have no superstar. If they mesh with the Seniors, they could be a very nice compliment to the 1-2 of Maile and Shover. Trevor Wellbrock may be the starting center, he is about 6"4 and doesn't look like he will stop growing. He's physical but has a nice jumpshot as well and has the attitude to dominate inside. Max Pauly could step up and play the PG position (if Coach L decides to have Shover on the wing). Stephen Wilson and Michael Robinson are two very, very athletic wingmen. They also have a sharpshooter in Matt Klein. Next year's CovCath team will have very little Varsity experience. This team reminds me of the 2005 team (not in caliber, but in makeup- a lot of people with talent but little varsity experience) After unloading a deep senior class, a lot people will have to step up. But the varsity experience that they gain this year will help them beyond this year(just like how in 2006, Bovard, Tierney, Jacobs, Young, and DNoll already had extensive varsity experience and they led CCH to state). But it is so early that some of the above names that I mentioned may not be contributors, so I guess we will have to wait and see.
Tiger1 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 With the current players they have returning next year, Holmes will be pre-season #1 and Boone Co #2. CovCath will be #3. IMO: 4-10 could be a number of teams, but they will probably not play a major role in who wins the 9th region next year.
Eta Rho Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 Hate to sound biased but with the group Holmes returns next year, they could very well make a run like we saw this year. They will be junior dominated but once again, very long and athletic and probably even bigger than this year's team. Their starting lineup should look something like this: PG Jamel Riley (6') G/F Ricardo Johnson (6'5) G/F Jeremiah Johnson (6'4) G/F Elijah Pittman (6'5) C/F Keyvon Arnold (6'6) Coming off the bench will most likely be Dom Johnson (6'3 G), but he could very well be inserted in the starting lineup with Arnold coming off the bench. Holmes weakness imo next year will be depth. Not too sure about their freshmen outside of Herndon and Arnold. The JV team was very good (20-1). Holmes has a lot of upside though. With Pittman and both Johnson brothers already at 6'5 as sophomores, it looks like they will grow another inch or two. SO we could possibly see three 6'6 guys in Holmes starting lineup with all of them being guards. Kind of scary to think about that. As for the rest of NKY: Boone returns a good junior to be class and if I'm not mistaken their freshman class was pretty good as well. IMO Boone and Holmes will be 1-2 preseason and throughout the year. Covcath returns POY candidate in Luke Maile as well as a very good guard in Shover. The key for them is whether or not they can get Isler to step up like J.D Schmerge did this year. If they can and get a few role players to step up like a Brandon Brown from the 06 team, don't be surprised to see Covcath give Holmes and Boone all they can handle. Newcath returns a solid core of players and had a good JV team so don't count them out. Pangallo will be huge for them. Ryle, yes I know we say this every year, could be the darkhorse or sleeper. They had a solid nucleus of younger players who could contribute next year. At the end of the year though, I think the region will run through Holmes with Boone and Covcath being the teams trying to knock them off.

IMO - if I can dress 10 to 12 players on a varsity bench with the talent Newport has I better be able to use the entire the bench. Coach Russell is a great person, really good with the young men too. I wish him all the best next season.

I wish him all the best next season. Newport will be a district title contended with Newcath in the 36th but won't be able to compete with the likes of Boone, Holmes or Covcath.

Grote and Kowolonek will be the main players with Lother most likely running the point but who else does Highlands return that I'm overlooking? Having a bit of brain cramp, sorry.

Ben Watson played quite a bit. 9 sophomores this past season. Tyler Grubbs, Kyle Wells, both 6'5 post players. Corey Dill, also good player with height.
