By the end of the '09 season, Holmes will have completed a run of five out of six 9th region crowns... IMO.

 

That would be quite a run. I think if Holmes doesn't win region next year or the year after with the Johnson brothers and Pittman that would be a disappointment.

 

All 3 will likely be D1 prospects by the time they're seniors. R. Johnson is already getting looks from a BEast school that's a national contender now.

You just don't see height in guard positions like that around here. I can't see Holmes losing a game around here.

Holmes only downfall could be not having a true big man. But then again if you're starting 4 6'6 guard, the big man from the other team will probably foul out trying to guard a quicker more explosive player.

Outside shooting is always going to be the question. Riley has shown he can shoot, but Ricardo will have to be more consistent to prevent teams being able to sit in zones

If Ricardo grows to 6'6, which he should, he then could be either a 2 guard or a small forward. His mid range jumper is already good. Also you have to realize he's only a sophomore. His game is still somewhat raw and it's his first year under Henley. I'm sure he and Wimzie will get him where he needs to be.

Don't think I'm attacking him, hes a great great player, I've seen him play a few times. He has the long arms that make him a tough defender and can drive past almost anyone. NKY could have a Mr. Basketball again.:dancingpa

Throw in 6'6 freshman Keyvon Arnold who will likely be 6'8 by the time he's a junior and Holmes has a team nobody will be able to match up with.

 

Also don't count out Covcath. They will be good next year and the following year as well.

 

I will give you the class of 2010 as being exceptional but to say Keyvon is a D1 caliber player is a significant stretch. I have seen him on the local AAU scene for years and he is not one of the top freshmen in N Ky much less on the state scene.

I agree with Right now Keyvon not being good enough to be a D1 guard, but by his junior and senior year, if he keeps developing he very well could be. At 6'7 or 6'8 I'd say he would probably be a small to mid major type D1 recruit.

Guess it could be a little too early to tell though.

 

Keyvon kind of reminds me of a Lexie Brown when he was a freshman only with a better outside game. The key for him though will be if he can develop an inside game which I'm sure Henley, Sullivan, and Wimzie will be working with him on over the summer and the next few years.

IMO the only irreplaceable loss will be McGraw. Eaton and Hurtt played vital roles but can be replaced by Grote/Watson. They showed they can play without Simpson and will show again next year. Kowolenek will be the leading scorer and Grote/Watson will be very good as well. Lother will get stronger and be the point guard. Dont forget about Grubbs either. He is a load down low and there wont be many teams able to move him off the blocks. I do think they will take their lumps during the season and probably end up 17 and 10 or something like that but like MC said, they will reach the Regionls and with a good draw (opposite Holmes) they may advance further than this year.

 

Next year's Highlands team will be a blue collar workhorse type team with no McGraw type leader.

 

Newport is my darkhorse to make some noise around tourney time. Alot of athleticism on that team so if Russell can coach em up they will be very much improved.

Here is my preseason top 10 for next season.

 

1.Holmes

2. Cov Cath

3. Boone Co

4. Highlands

5. Ryle

6. Newport

7. St. Henry

8. NCC

9. Holy Cross

10. Dixie

 

 

 

Dixie will not be a top 10 season. I think Beechwood will make a strong showing for the top ten. They had a excellent year last year and had strong showings against Ryle, NCC, and Cov Cath. With wins against Newport and Holy Cross.

WOW.....love the enthusiasm for Holmes ER and they are talented w/plenty to be excited about. Let's just pull the reigns in a little? A quick review indicates that every good player on Holmes will continue to grow with each adding at least two inches and NBA three-point range in the next two years! First, probably not going to happen.........second, are the rest of the kids in the region finished growing?

 

I seem to recall that in addition to Boone having a heralded class of 2010, that NCC won the JV tourney this year, CovCath won the Frosh tourney last year, and HHS was 20-1 as freshman (only losing to a good Ryle squad in the semis) as well as being Champs of the State Tourney as eighth graders.

 

The point being, none of those teams can claim to "have the 9th region run through them" any more than the other. They will all have the potential to be contenders in the next two years....some of which will be determined by who is added by surrounding classes or unexpecxted departures........regardless, the quality of play will be elevated but don't expect any of them to "not get beat by anyone around here" Should be fun to watch !

Covcath beat Beechwood by 16. I don't call being beat by 16 points a very good showing.

 

Don;t think I'm trying to take away from what Beechwood did this year. They indeed had an excellent year and I personally know Coach Schumate, but to say they will be a top 10 team next year is a bit of a stretch.
