Theoldguy Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Ryle High receives $750,000 donation BY ADAM ROSING | AROSING@NKY.COM UNION - Fundraising efforts for synthetic field turf at Ryle High School just got a huge shot in the arm. An announcement released by the school this morning stated it had received a $750,000 donation for the project. "Ryle High School is pleased to announce that Patricia Borland has agreed to donate $750,000 from the Borland Family Fund to the Ryle High School Stadium Renovation Project. The Borland family gift will cover the installation costs of synthetic turf, which is phase one of the renovation project. Phase two donations will help further stadium renovations." Students, coaches and parents began fundraising in the last week of February and have already collected an additional $100,000 for phase two of the project.
Theoldguy Posted March 15, 2008 Author Posted March 15, 2008 I am indeed happy for Ryle High School but I am a bit confused by the Boone County Board of Education! Didn't just a couple of years ago a certain Boone County former student and football player offer to build Boone County HS a turf field, but because he wasn't willing to pay to install Turf Field's on all the Boone County (Conner, Ryle) fields, he was told no, if you can't do it for all, you can't do it for one? Am I getting the story correct, and if so, what the difference today to allow Ryle to install the Turf Field but not Boone County? Just a bit puzzled if my memory of the events are true!

Theoldguy Posted March 15, 2008 Author Posted March 15, 2008 If I were a Boone County HS Parent, I would be on the phone demanding that the Boone County Board of Education install a Turf Field on our Football Field immediately, if this is indeed a change of policy, by the Boone County Board of Education! Again, maybe I have the story wrong, but it is what I remember from a couple of years ago! Anyone know anything different?
RyleRAID34 Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 When Alexander was going to put turf in at Boone he was only donating 1/2 the cost and wanted the BOE to finance the rest. Anyone connected to a school district knows that the BOE could not do this without financing the cost for the other schools. I don't think he was willing to put up the money for all the schools. I have also heard and don't know if it is true but he wanted them to use a specific company to do the work and again anyone in education knows you have to bid out any work. The BOE is NOT giving any money to Ryle for this project so if the other Boone County schools want turf then they need to do it through private donations.

I wonder if its the same Patricia Borland who's husband was Cliff Borland, former President of Newport Steel and CEO of NS Group Inc. They did charity work and he passed away in early 2007. Anyone know if its the same person?

The way I understand it, Alexander offered to lead the fund raising efforts to install artificial turf at Boone. He did not offer to cover the entire price of the turf himself.

Strange! Again I am indeed happy for Ryle! OG - I have no problem with this. If Shawn wanted to donate enough for the ENTIRE cost, Boone would have their field. We should not penalize Ryle nor should we expect the BOE to pay for Boone's field just because an alum wants to pay "part" of the bill.
