As I understand it they have started requesting bids. It should be in this season as they had till May 1 to get the funds for this year. Apparently, OG has no idea how school systems are run. I have to give it to our fundraising committee they got several sports involved in the fundraising because it will benefit many of the sports including the band.

OG - I have no problem with this. If Shawn wanted to donate enough for the ENTIRE cost, Boone would have their field. We should not penalize Ryle nor should we expect the BOE to pay for Boone's field just because an alum wants to pay "part" of the bill.

 

It's the public school system, cshs81 and OG never seems to be too pleased with public education. :ylsuper:

No TOG understands how thing are run, but I do understand that the rich just get richer and do indeed take care of there own, and I have no problem with it. But, do you really think when talking about a public school system, this is fair to the Boone, Conner and Cooper kids, that one schools gets something that the others simply can't afford?

Where is it written that each public school with a certain area must have the exact same facilities? Boone just got themselves a brand new, multi-million dollar gymnasium, paid for with taxpayer money. I don't begrudge them that in the slightest. Cooper, obviously, has ALL brand spanking new facilities. Does that make it unfair to Ryle, Boone, or Conner? Not at all. Ryle went out and raised the money on their own to fully pay for this facility at no expense to the taxpayers (including those taxpayers whose kids attend Cooper, Boone, and Conner!). Congrats to them! If any of the other schools would like the same type of facility, then by all means go out there and raise the money. Ryle owes no apologies to anyone.

 

BTW, Dixe H.S. sure seems to have nicer facilities than other public schools in their area. How were those facilities paid for? (I really don't know - just curious).

When Alexander was going to put turf in at Boone he was only donating 1/2 the cost and wanted the BOE to finance the rest. Anyone connected to a school district knows that the BOE could not do this without financing the cost for the other schools. I don't think he was willing to put up the money for all the schools. I have also heard and don't know if it is true but he wanted them to use a specific company to do the work and again anyone in education knows you have to bid out any work. The BOE is NOT giving any money to Ryle for this project so if the other Boone County schools want turf then they need to do it through private donations.

 

Someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong. I had heard that Boone County H.S. was not interested in trying to raise the funds for the portion of the field not paid for by Alexander and that is why they wanted BOE to finance the remainder (which, as stated above, could not be done without doing for all the schools). I also heard that one of the stipulations that Alexander wanted was to have the field named after him.

BTW, special acknowlegement to Roger Babik, who is spearheading this fundraising effort. Roger is absolutely one class act. Of course, he would never take one iota of credit for any of this and will instead give the credit and glory to God. For those that don't know him, he founded and runs Master Provisons, an evangelistic ministry that donates clothing and other needs to economically devastated countries.

Architect has to draw up plans, which must be approved by BOE, then bids put out. It'll be done this summer and ready to go for first home football game 9/19. (Actually, it will be played on by the soccer teams prior to this football game).

 

Additional improvements are being planned for fieldhouse, press box, concessions, and surrounding facilties.

Congrats to Ryle and what a great gift - thanks to the Borland family. It sounds to me like any of the Boone County schools can do this if they go out and raise the money privately. I'm sure the BOE would approve every school to raise their own money. Why would they not approve people paying for the work? Ryle just went ahead and did it and sounds like God blessed it. What's the big deal from OG??????? I do not understand where you are coming from?

Yes, Kudos to Roger for getting this done! OG - while Ryle may have the richest tax base in Boone County most of those who have it don't part with it or they are sending their children to private & independent schools. Don't assume something unless you have facts.

Good for Ryle High School and the community.

The gift from the Borland family is impressive, it is also impressive to raise 100,000 in less than a month. I believe sythetic fields are the best route for high schools and the community surrounding the schools because they allow for so much use.

Here's another example of this generous family's philanthropic work in our area.

Why is not fair?

 

The Diocese didn't stop CCH from putting in turf before NC or Holy Cross.
