The new facility will certainly be exciting and a boost. Ryle has really done well in a lot of sports like wrestling, soccer, baseball, softball, football, golf, etc. Honestly, boys' basketball has been the main disappointment but I look for next year to be a decent one. They were so close to having a pretty good year but lacked consistency and leadership. I look for that to change next year. Ryle indeed seems to be on that course when you look at all of their programs together.

It's the public school system, cshs81 and OG never seems to be too pleased with public education. :ylsuper:

 

First to set the record straight, if I thought Public education was so bad, then why is my child attending a Public University in Kentucky? Some schools, be they public or private are better than others, be they private or public and I like many choose to do what I think is best for my child! Nothing more, nothing less.

Not at all! I think it's great what the Ryle boosters have done and they are to be congratulated for it! It proves that being a public school doesn't stop those parents and or boosters who want excellence for their school, from getting it and it can be earned from hard work and effort as many of the private school have done for years. What I am saying however, is it fair? Clearly, the other three public schools in Boone County don't have the tax base, that Ryle has. Could Boone County HS with it's student base of inner City Florence residents, afford to do what Ryle has done? I don't think so, and to me that is the rub for a publc school system.

 

Understand I am happy for Ryle and it students! They wanted something and they found a way to get it!

I will bet you that Boone County gets turf through this same model. And, I hope that Conner and Cooper do the same thing. To me, it's a great story about people pulling together to do something for their kids and community. Also, I do not think that Clifford Borland lived in Union. So, this huge gift came from someone that did not live in that great tax base. So, just maybe Boone does not have to rely on people living in the "inner city".

Glad you figured it out 'cause I couldn't find an argument with Ryle getting a donation for Field Turf.

 

AS mentioned in a previous post - there are some districts that are considered the "haves" and others the "have nots." This characteristic is true with the public school system as well as the catholic system. Does Field Turf automatically mean you are in a system of a favoralble tax base? Most likely, yes! Be it a favorable residential or light industry and commercial tax base. Does it mean it's unfair to other schools that are not in such a tax base? No.

 

Highlands, Beechwood., Newport, Dixie and Covington Catholic all had to go out and raise money for Field Turf. I would venture to say all of them had at least one major doner that got the ball rolling to make it plausible. (I can only think of one school that did not have to go through the fund raising efforts that the five schools above went through and that is Johnson Central. (JC received thier money from a coal tax subsidy.)

 

So, if Boone Co HS wants Field Turf and there are enough supporters in Florence with the same dream, it will happen!

 

Congrats to Ryle... I for one would love to see their program develop. We as northern Kentuckians should all pull for a higher level of competitive football in northern Kentucky.

Congrats to Ryle for their fortunate situation. And a THANK YOU to Mrs. Borland for being so gracious to use her wealth to benefit MANY others. Don't blame Ryle for their good fortune!

The BOE of Boone County does not worry about fairness or equal money spent between the high schools of the county. All one has to do is look at the locker rooms at each high school and it is easy to see which schools are favored.

Where is it written that each public school with a certain area must have the exact same facilities? Boone just got themselves a brand new, multi-million dollar gymnasium, paid for with taxpayer money. I don't begrudge them that in the slightest. Cooper, obviously, has ALL brand spanking new facilities. Does that make it unfair to Ryle, Boone, or Conner? Not at all. Ryle went out and raised the money on their own to fully pay for this facility at no expense to the taxpayers (including those taxpayers whose kids attend Cooper, Boone, and Conner!). Congrats to them! If any of the other schools would like the same type of facility, then by all means go out there and raise the money. Ryle owes no apologies to anyone.

 

BTW, Dixe H.S. sure seems to have nicer facilities than other public schools in their area. How were those facilities paid for? (I really don't know - just curious).

 

Don't know exactly how it all works but I do know if one gets something they all get something. Up until this, all the fields are basically the same. Once BC got renovated so did Conner. As for BC's gym, well, Conner had a very nice addition added on a yr ago. Ryle does not need any renovation due to how new it is, I guess.

 

The word on the street was Alexander was footing the entire bill for a turf field at BC but was told if one got it they all had to get it and he was not willing to pay the entire bill for the other two schools, that is what I was told. Now, Ryle gets a great donation and they are putting in fieldturf. Just doesn't sound right after BC was told NO, at least w/the info I heard.

 

Obviously, there are two differnt stories circulating regarding what exactly Alexander was willing to do. Maybe one day the truth will come out.

 

All schools should have fieldturf. When will the schools start getting fieldturf on their baseball fields? That is the field that needs it the most since they suffer from the rainy season?

That may have been the "word on the street", but I believe this falls under the category of there being "more to the story" than that. He did not offer to pay the entire bill for the field.

Ryle High receives $750,000 donation

UNION - Fundraising efforts for synthetic field turf at Ryle High School just got a huge shot in the arm.

An announcement released by the school this morning stated it had received a $750,000 donation for the project.

"Ryle High School is pleased to announce that Patricia Borland has agreed to donate $750,000 from the Borland Family Fund to the Ryle High School Stadium Renovation Project. The Borland family gift will cover the installation costs of synthetic turf, which is phase one of the renovation project. Phase two donations will help further stadium renovations."

 

Students, coaches and parents began fundraising in the last week of February and have already collected an additional $100,000 for phase two of the project. End [/Quote]

 

 

This is what I think is the funniest part of this whole thread. I can't believe that Ryle needs renovation already. Are you kidding me? What, are they 11, 12 years old already. I believe that the BOE met this week to discuss many issues. One issue that was approved is for Boone to begin fundraising effots for a turf field. Maybe Shaun has a few bucks left and will offer again???

We expected that there would be those that would not support the effort. There are a number of improvments that need to be made. Just as it is with any building project developers and builders fail to provide for the future so it is not hard to believe that they have outgrown the fieldhouse. I am sure that 12 years ago they did not think that they would have to support 110 football players along with soccer, track, and baseball kids all trying to work out of the building. There is also an issue with male and female athelets trying to work out of that building. There is a building there but it certainly does not support the number of kids that are using it. So to aswer your question it is not a matter of how good do you need it, it is having a building that can serve everyone. This whole effort should show that dreams can come true and that any school can do the same thing. Ryle was just lucking enough to find a group of parents and coaches that would step up and do what it takes. I can't think of 1 negative thing to say about any of it. As they say nobody likes a winner;)

 

P.S Boone County's donnor way back when did not want to bid the project out as the law directs any school to do so that is why it did not happen it was not a policy change. The Ryle parents only controled the funding efforts.
