Highlands spring football

Featured Replies

I find it hard to believe that a player can make or break his football season in 10 spring practices. I would hope Dale would tell his players to be committed to their current sport.

Does Dale let his football players start basketball during the football season?

And Ialso find it hard to believe that you have all of the info you need to state your opinion.:D:sssh:

I'm trying to figure out why this is such a big concern to you:confused:

:lol:It's not!!!!!! Trust me, his concern is coming from another source!!!!

Its not that unusual this time of year for the baseball team to be unable to practice outside because of the poor weather, which of course means that the baseball players would be able to attend football practice without missing much quality baseball practice time.

.

I see I've upset the HHS football cart.

Hopefully, I can type despite all of the "Covcath guy" arrows I've taken.

Basketball starts in October a few weeks before the season is over. Its hypocritical to say that its OK to miss baseball for football yet its not OK to miss football for basketball. You're either for the concept of "doing both" or you're not. I'm not.

I'm disappointed in any head coach that does not tell his players that your current sport is your priority and that they should NOT come to football until baseball is over. If he doesn't then he's talking out both sides of his mouth when it comes to "cooperating" with the other sports. To not tell them to go to baseball full-time is to insinuate that they are doing the right thing by missing baseball for spring football. That's a shame.

Now before you guys start flinging arrows again at the "Covcath guy" remember that I have no issue with Highlands. I respect their success in football . I have no UK/Duke thing going on here. I'd ask each of you to take a step back and do the ol' "put the shoe on the other foot" thing. If you say "its different because football is the most important thing" then you don't care about Highlands, you only care about Highlands football.

Your AD is not doing his job. HHS has everything they need to be the top overall athletics program in NKY but because of the "football is first" mentality, they are not and never will be. That's a shame for the other kids in athletics at HHS.

So to answer the question of "why do I care", I care because it puts undue pressure on kids to make the choice when an adult should be making the choice unnecessary. I also care because I love all high school sports and want each school to promote them to their student body. I care because I hear too many people talking about kids not being dedicated to their team and then those same adults (and leaders) ignore kids not being dedicated to their CURRENT team.

THAT'S why I care.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and I may be wrong, but I think at Highlands you have more athletic kids deciding not to go out for baseball due to spring break and not sprinig football. Should the adults make the decision to do away with spring break, (that has been going on since I don't know when) so that we can have a strong baseball team?

I see I've upset the HHS football cart.

You are assuming quite a bit.

From what I've seen the past few years are kids and their parents making decisions based on trying to excel in their best sport. All of these sports are just about year round now. To compete you pretty much have to be dedicated to one sport. I think exactly the opposite of what you are insinuating is happening. The athletic staff goes out of it's way to try and accomodate all the kids that wish to play multiple sports.

I see I've upset the HHS football cart.

I think you are missing the point that the football season is already deep in progression and at that time we are playing the district games. Whereas, spring football occurs at either before or at the very beginning of the baseball season, when weather often makes playing baseball next to impossible. As was pointed out earlier by someone, a couple football-baseball players attended football for the first time on Friday because baseball practice was cancelled. Given the poor spring weather, its possible to only attend football practice when you can't do much at a baseball practice.

Having said that, my guess is that Dale would be fine if a football player said he wanted to miss some football practices to make some basketball practices. Knowing how Dale has operated in the past, he probably say: "do what you want to do. If by missing some practices, I feel some other player will be better prepared for Friday night, I'm going with the other player".

Perhaps a better analogy however to this situation is when football players ask to miss two a days during the summer to play on their club baseball or AAU basketball practices. Dale has given them permission to miss football. Drew Simons missed about a week of two a days this past summer to participate on his AAU basketball team. Dale was fine with it and Drew suffered no repercussions.

Dale isn't talking out of both sides of his mouth at all. He tells the kids to do what they want to do and does not tell them what sport they should be playing. In my mind, that would be the worst thing for him to do. If you read Sticky's one post on the whole spring football/baseball issue, he told us that Dale does actively encourage kids to play baseball. He got on one player in particular once he found out the kid was not going to play baseball.

Sorry if I led the charge on picking on the CovCath guy, but this issue is really wearing thin on me. There are a lot of un-informed people out there that think Dale puts pressure on kids to play football instead of baseball and he DOES NOT. What you are proposing is that Dale tell kids they cannot participate at all in spring football if they play baseball. Frankly, that would be doing a disservice to baseball, as some kids under that rule might not play baseball at all, which would make the baseball situation worse.

The way things are working now are just fine. Spring football was not the cause at all of our setback in baseball. There were other issues most of which have been successfully addressed. Coach Johnson and his assistants are going a great job. But I appreciate your concern and caring, even it is coming from a CovCath guy.:D

P.S. I have some band-aids for those arrow wounds.:ylsuper:

Dale went to college (Cornell) on a baseball scholarship...and he was an all-state guard in FB. I believe he values both skill sets!

So are you guys telling me that only CCH fans looking for trouble or Ft T folks that don't know what's going on are not down with the current mindset in Bluebird land?

I think leatherneck is telling you perception and reality are two different things.

I find it a little ironic that a CCH guy (sorry I couldn't resist) is shooting arrows across the licking river when the perception from this third party is that CovCath has a real issue with the coach (not the football coach) of a major sport not wanting his players to play other sports.

To address lneck, I don't think folks are getting their boxers in a bunch, I think they are genuinely interested in what makes the Birds tick.

I just think its a tough time of the year to see guys wearing pads but I am a hoops guy at heart. : ) Man its March Madness and I drove by the field the other day and saw the Birds in full pads. Those are some dedicated kids who want a State Championship every year, that is for sure. To see football on St. Patty's day is interesting to say the least.

On the baseball/football issue I think Dale does a good job of working with the B-ball coaches and promoting both sports. I havent heard anything negative and thats just my perspective.

I just read on another thread that Dale was practicing with the baseball team on the same field!!! What, in the name of Homer Rice, is going on up there? Don't you know that these two sports cannot coexist in Ft. T? What if one of the FB players sneaks over and steals a base? Or an infielder "punts" a ball hit to him? The ramifications are mind boggling!!!! :D
