Spanking children can lead to problems later in life, study finds

Proverbs 13:24 says "he who spares the Rod, hates his son".

Parents are encouraged to appy the "Rod" of discipline. The rod imparts wisdom and promotes a helathy family. Discipline is rooted into love.

The word "Rod" actually means punishment not a real rod.

I read several different thoughts on this and I see that it shows us we are made the same. With different ideas that works for you. Even with my 4 sons a couple of them all I had to do is put on my "Game face".

A key part of this scripture that is quickly overlooked as they rush to the rod part but is the word I bolded. That is a strong, strong statement about a parent who refuses to discipline their chilid.

Why would you want to make it so that two people get "disciplined" that day?

Nothing aggravates me more than for someone who doesn't know me or my child to try and tell me how to raise my children.

Fair warning, if I were the guy you "called out" the wrath laid upon you would be much more than my child will ever get.

I highly doubt that. I will describe in detail the particulars of that situation. I was in a Home Depot in Knoxville, TN about three yerars ago. In the check out line a small girl was asking her father who was a average sized man (I could have told you he was 6'6" or he was Chuck Liddell just to make myself look tougher) what a particular item on the shelf was. The father told his daughter to be quiet and she did so. Later, down the aisle the little girl asked what something else was and the father slapped her across the face and then "spanked" her bottom. At that time I walked up to him and told him that the slap was uncalled for and if he hit the girl again that I would hit him. The man looked at me angrily then dropped his head after he realized that I was not a 8 year old girl or afraid of him. If after witnessing that display of "discipline" you wouldn't have said anything then I think that would be a cowardly act. If I hadn't said anything then I would have been a coward.

It is not my place to tell you how to discipline your kids. What gets my craw, is that every time a kid messes up or an adult commits a crime there is a ton of people screaming that the kid probably wasn't spanked and if he had been then he wouldn't be a criminal. The fact of the matter is that all parents have a different way of disciplining their child. There are adults who got spanked as kids that are highly successful and there are kids that got spanked who turn out to be murderers and rapists. The same thing goes for kids who didn't get spanked. What methods an individual parent employs to raise there kids is there business, but when someone crosses the line something should be done.

I'm sure all of the super parents on this site will say that my house must be a zoo and that I have no discipline. That is fine by me. I know how to handle my business and I don't spank or hit my kids in order to do it.

For those who are quoting scripture, I have this to say. Just becuase I don't spank my child does not mean that I do not discipline them.

To the poster you wanted to bet who's kids would turn out better. I'll take that bet and hope and pray that they all turn out fine.

Good luck and God Bless.

.

You don't have to spank to have good discipline.

Spanking does not mean that you have good discipline.

Spanking can be bad discipline.

You can love your child and still spank.

You can love your child and not spank.

I know I sure deserved it when I was a kid.

I guess in my opinion using a belt is kind of crossing the limit. I sure know that I was threatened with the belt all the time, but it never went that far.

Mine was switches. And it did go that far. And I deserved it.

I don't know, as someone who doesn't have kids it is kind of hard for me to make a judgment.

I don't think a belt or switches will be a regular thing for me, but who knows. I HOPE it doesn't come to that, but once again who knows.

The worse part was when my mama would send me out to pick my own switches off the tree.

Looks like so far this is a unanamous vote FOR spanking and you can count me in on that vote as well.

Seems to me that "not spanking" your children can lead to problems later in life.

Time Out  What a Joke! My dad believed in "time outs" as well though, he sometimes took "time out" of his day to bust my backside..

I might also add that I needed every one of them, didn't think so at the time but the older that I get the smarter my dad was ;).

JMO but a big pct. of the problems that this country has today are the direct result of this type of thinkng.

Spoiled brat kids lead to spoiled brat adults and in turn raise other spoiled brat kids and it goes on and on.

I know that my era of kids were by no stretch of the imagination walking around with "halo's" around our head but there was a line there, a distinct line that we knew that we didn't cross. I believe that we had much more respect for other kids, our parents and other adults and authority figures. I knew that if I got a "spanking" or even in trouble at school then I could just as well expect the same when I got home.

I beleive that we (this country) needs to go back to that type of thinking and let the parents that believe in time out take a time out to really see how their kids are acting, our society today is full of them.

I will say that I fully realize that this is certainly not all kids, there are very good kids out there raised by very good parents. Problem is...we don't hear of those kind of stories enough.

"My name is Oldrambler and I approved this message" :D

Ame and again i say Amen! If i got a spanking for something I didn't do I figured it made up for something I didn't get caught doing!

" Spare the Rod Spoil the Child"

Sounds like past generations being spanked led to the same people not spanking their kids. Maybe beatings with switches, belts and what not had more of an effect than some want to admit...

They can have a very serious effect on a child. Some may not want to admit that though.

Don't spank them, just let them do whatever they want. They will turn out fine. YEA, RIGHT! Probably should just let them tell us what to do. And we wonder what's wrong with the world today, it doesn't take but a few with that type of opinion and we are all in trouble.

Heck, I spank mine everyday whether they need it or not.

No one says that not spanking them = letting them do whatever they want. You can discipline a child without hitting them.

Could solving a problem with violence (i.e. spanking) cause a child to later in life try and solve another problem with violence and end up in jail? Possibly.

Yes it can if the spankings are severe enough.

From one of my readings in my Domestic Violence Class:

Most parents have done it at one time or another. But if you are screaming, yelling, or lecturing, stop. If you are spanking, stop. If you are trying to gain compliance through threats and warnings, stop. All of these methods are disrespectful and encourage doubt, shame, guilt, and/or rebellion -- now and in the future. Ultimately, punishment creates more misbehavior. (There are many research studies that demonstrate the long-term negative effects of punishment. These studies are usually buried in academic journals where parents don't see them.)

"Wait just one minute," you may be thinking. "These methods worked for my parents. you're taking away every tool I have to manage my child's behavior. What am I supposed to do, let my child do anything she wants?" Of course not. Permissiveness is disrespectful and does not teach important life skills. You can never really control anyone's behavior but your own, and your attempts to control your cihld will usually create more problems and more power struggles...

...Life with an active, challenging preschooler becomes much easier when you accept that positive learning does not take place in a threatening atmosphere. Children don't listen when they are feeling scared, hurt, or angry. Punishment derails the learning process...

More about "time outs".

Most parents use it (timeouts) (in one study, 91 percent of parents of three year old children admitted to doing so), but few really understand what it is or how best to use it with young children.

A positive time out can be an extremely effective way of helping a child (and a parent) calm down enough to solve problems together. In fact, when we are upset or angry, we actually lose access to the part of the brain that allows us to think rationally and calmly, so a positive not punitive time out can help everyon a great deal. A punitive time out is past oriented, making children suffer for what they have done and not actually encouraging them to make good decisions about what to do in the future. A positive time out allows for cooling off until both of you can access the rational part of the brain, and it is future oriented because when children feel encouraged, they can learn to make psotive decisions about self control and responsibility.

I think we can all have an opinion regarding this situation that will not be understood by everyone.

One of our rules (we had a few) was no fighting where it got to physical. Or don't hit each other in anger. That will lead to a severe Spanking. Only happened once and never again. I've never had a girl and always wondered how I would have handled that one. I can't see spanking a girl.
