But, that's what you did with me.

I have no clue what you are talking about at this point. This isn't about you and I.

Sure you do. And who said it was?

It doesn't matter. And no, I don't.

If it didn't you wouldn't reply and yes, you do. :p

If I knew what you were talking about, I would respond with something other than, "I have no idea what you are talking about".

Regardless, it does not matter and unless we get back to talking about the topic at hand, I'm done here.

If you say so.

Bye.

Before we put this horse to pasture, a story from my MS days.

All male class and we were not the best class in the world. In fact, we were bad. One day the teacher had enough and called the worse of the worse to the front of the room as he was acting up.

He arrogantly marched to the front and told the teacher to pull that paddle off the wall and whip him. (Yes, in those days teachers not only paddled, they advertised it.)

Well the teacher a former football player at Morehead said, who said I was going to use that paddle and pulled out a boat oar. A BOAT OAR!!!!

He told the boy to grab the side of his desk and right in front of each of us, he began to paddle him.

3 swats and 3 times that young 7th grade boy who thought he was a cocky young man was lifted off the ground.

We were the best class for the remaining 6 months. Not nary another discipline referral in that class. I worked as hard in that class as any other ever. I was NOT going to get whipped like that. It CHANGED that class.

And not a parent complained about it. And we learned in that class because of a 60 second exchange.

It may have changed the class, but how demeaning and embarrassing do you think the affect was on that child? Do you think that bothers him to this day? I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

There's a reason teachers aren't allowed to spank children anymore...it has more long lasting negative affects than positive ones.

You know we hadn't learned a thing up to that point of the year. We learned a lot from that point on. Him and many others and I am ashame to say me too, prevented others from learning. Teacher had tried a lot of things that failed to change our behavior. That didn't and every kid in that classroom had a chance to learn afterwards.

If his parents handled it correctly and pointed out and emphasized to him that it was HIS BEHAVIOR that led to it, that the teacher had NOTHING really to do with the choice of paddling that HIS BEHAVIOR was the reason and the LONE REASON why he was paddled, it should have had a positive effect.

He got paddled because of what he did and that was all.

Just like I got paddled for throwing something at another kid. It was my behavior that led to my paddling. That was it. Bottom line. My fault and I brought it on myself.

Just like life as an adult. I do negative and bad things, negative and bad things are going to happen to me.

I go out and speed going 90 MPH on these country roads, good chance I am going to wreck. I do stupid and bad things, I should expect bad things to happen back.

You may not have learned anything in class, but that doesn't mean that a spanking is automatically in order. There are other ways to get children to follow the rules in school, I know that first hand. Spankings are unnecessary in all situations in a school, no matter what.

He may have gotten paddled for what he did, and he may have understood that, however is public humiliation really necessary? I think that is excessive and could be very traumatic for a child to go through. It could have long lasting effects in a very negative way.

You may have reacted fine to a good old fashion paddling, but another kid may be effected from that in a very negative way for the rest of their lives.

You speed, and you wreck, or get pulled over, and the police don't make you run around town in your underwear or bend you over their knee and spank you. It is not common or necessary to publicly humiliate adults for most crimes, so why should it be okay to do that for children?

On your first paragraph you must have read over the part where I had said that the teacher had run a gamut of strategies and nothing was working in this classroom.

You know I got a speeding ticket once and it was real embarrassing sitting alongside the road with the blue lights going behind me as all my friends passed me an honked as I was getting a speeding ticket.

The way they show the trials on the news, I would hope it is embarrassing for an adult to stand in front of the judge and have that broadcast out to the nation.

BTW, the kid didn't have to run around the classroom in his underwear before he was spanked. That would have been going too far.:p:D

I firmly disagree with the bolded and if my children needed spanking in school, I would allow it and would even tell the principal to call me and I will come down and administer the spanking. But my kids respond to spanking.

And on the negative response, I have seen many, many, many kids respond negatively to the passive discipline that occurs too many times today. They see it as enabling and they can take advantage of it rather than true discipline. Yet, when they are disciplined with a firm hand and see they are going to get away with their little games, they respond.

If the teacher couldn't get the class to work, oh well. I am still 100% against public humiliation and spankings in school. Completely unnecessary either way.

Getting pulled over isn't remotely close to the embarrassment a CHILD suffers after being spanked in front of all of his or her friends. It makes them feel completely powerless, and that's not a good thing for a young kid.

There is a difference between the mind of an adult and the mind of a child. Adults are built to be able to deal with things better than a young kid. You should know that. Comparing public trials to public humiliation of a child is not a good comparison.

You may see what happens on the outside to a kid. They may follow the rules and do what they're told after they are spanked, but what is happening in their mind? It could have long lasting effects that YOU do not see.

You are assuming that every child is embarrassed and that is not true. I was not embarrassed because I learned at home that when I was spanked it was because of something I DID and needed to stop doing.

The bolded is making the argument for spanking. It is something a kid understands. Negative physical reinforcement. Touch a stove and it hurts so don't touch a stove anymore. Kids can handle that.

Kids can't handle being removed to timeout for touching the stove and having an explanation given to them about pain that would be associated with touching the stove when they have no concept of the pain that comes with touching a stove. Adults, yes. Kids, no.

And allowing kids to get by with THEIR negative actions with what they see as no consequences simply enables them and has more negative consequences then spanking.

I hear them all the time talking about how to go to court and what to say and what to wear and how to act and they will have you do something that doesn't mean anything and give you 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th chances. And they come out saying they got by with it and continue doing the same thing. Till they have 5 years of doing the same things over and over and over and now have developed habits of doing it rather than one time excursions of doing it.
