Spanking children can lead to problems later in life, study finds

Featured Replies

Please go back and find the post were I claimed to know how to raise a child.

I'd LOVE to see it.

BTW, being a parent, doesn't make you good at being a parent. Not everyone who has kids is qualified to raise children.

On the bold-ed part, I agree. They're usually the ones that try to let a book raise their kids.

It's what you imply. It's the fact that you argue with actual parents as if the book is correct and they are wrong.

Please show me where I've implied that anyone here is wrong, or that the book is correct?

I'd LOVE to see it. You are reaching here badly...

I'm saying the same stuff I've said throughout this entire thread. Let me break it down for you...here's what I believe about this topic in a nutshell.

1.) Not all kids respond well to spanking. Some might, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best form of discipline. Just because it worked for your parents, or you, or your friends, that doesn't mean it's the best method for all.

2.) Not having kids, does NOT prohibit you from having an opinion on the matter. This is a message board, everyone is allowed to have an opinion on EVERYTHING.

3.) I don't believe everything I read in class. I do believe some of the things. I'm a senior, I am pretty good at figuring out what is crap, and what is real. I also know which professors are usually full of it by now...

How many times do I have to say that not all of my knowledge on the topic comes from a book? Or are you just ignoring me when I say that?

Knowledge? What knowledge could you possibly have on the subject? You have no kids.

And you accuse me of reaching.

Okay, you shouldn't post in the pro sports forum unless you've played pro sports.

Or in any Nascar threads, unless you have raced in a Nascar.

Or in threads about cops, unless you've been a cop.

Or in threads about politics, unless you've been a politician.

Or in threads about teachers, unless you've been a teacher.

And about my knowledge...

I do KNOW that spankings can work for some, and I also know that spankings do NOT work for some. I've talked to parents, I've talked to professors, I've talked to kids...

I would call that knowledge. Do I know what or exactly how to raise a kid? No, but I do have some knowledge on THIS topic. Which is "Spanking children can lead to problems later in life, study finds".

Like I said earlier, what I've learned in my Domestic Violence class I will take as pretty good information. The woman teaching it has been involved in Domestic Violence cases for many years, she knows her stuff.

......Well, she might just have to teach the way she does not believe...ever think of that?

.....also, I not only worked with domestic violence cases...I was actually in shelter with these women and children for many years...and was told by the director that I was the best case manager she has ever had in 25 years...

.....and, I wonder if your teacher has raised as many children as PH and I have had....13 girls, 1 boy.....all foster children who came to us were very violent to say the least....we did a great job with them. Lets see, we are talking them being great parents, college grads and have great careers!!!

.....Hmmm, I wonder how much of an expert your teacher really is?

.....Plus, you call your teacher a women who teaches the class....does she have a degree...I have a BS in Social Work and MaEd in Mental Heath Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family....I consider myself knowing what I am talking about, not only in experience in in degrees as well. Oh, by the way, I graduated with the top marks amoung my contemporaries in each graduating class.

Please show me where I've implied that anyone here is wrong, or that the book is correct?

Here's a few.

You can discipline a child without hitting them.

Sometimes spanking a 3 year old screaming bloody murder and kicking the side of the car might make the 3 year old more angry....which defeats the purpose of spanking the child.

If a 3 year old doesn't have the mental capacity to make the decisions on their own, do you think they have the mental capacity to understand why they are being spanked?

How is that helping them for the future? All they know is when they get spanked, to stop what they are doing. Some kids might understand why they need to stop, but some will just know that when mommy or daddy is mad, some one did something wrong. In the future, that could still relate and they may the same things anytime anyone gets mad.

It may have changed the class, but how demeaning and embarrassing do you think the affect was on that child? Do you think that bothers him to this day? I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

There's a reason teachers aren't allowed to spank children anymore...it has more long lasting negative affects than positive ones.

Spankings are unnecessary in all situations in a school, no matter what.

He may have gotten paddled for what he did, and he may have understood that, however is public humiliation really necessary? I think that is excessive and could be very traumatic for a child to go through. It could have long lasting effects in a very negative way.

I really love this one.

If the teacher couldn't get the class to work, oh well. I am still 100% against public humiliation and spankings in school. Completely unnecessary either way.
This one too! :D

Spanking someone is very demeaning. You wouldn't do that to an adult if they did something wrong. We don't hit our criminals...

It's college, she teaches what she wants to teach. Why is it so hard for you all to accept that some people do not advocate spankings?

I'm not sure the degree that she was involved, but I know she was not sitting behind a desk, let's put it that way.

I'd say, since you don't know here at all, you have no basis for insinuating that she isn't an "expert". Just because you've done all of this stuff and you disagree, that means she isn't an expert? Does that mean that every scientist that disagrees with one another, one isn't an expert but the other one is?

Laughable at best.

That would be nothing more than hearsay. Most importantly, it isn't experience, which I have and you do not. So, like I said, weigh in on the subject when you get experienced, as of now your points are merely conjecture.

Hogwash!

double hogwash

It's not, it's ridiculous to us for someone with no REAL knowledge of the subject to tell us how it works.

Here's a few.

I'm not telling anyone they are wrong here. I'm saying that there are ways to discipline a child without hitting them. Nice try.

Once again, where did I insinuate someone was wrong, or that a book was right? Strike 2.

Simply asking a question. If this were baseball, you'd be OUT.

Key words in this post: some kids. I've never claimed all kids respond the same. Only that spankings don't work for everybody. This post reinforces what I've been saying all along.

Spanking your own child, and spankings in school are very different. I am 100% against school spankings, and apparently a lot of other people are too, since they no longer are allowed.

Also about spankings in school, which are now 100% illegal. I never said ALL SPANKINGS ARE UNNECESSARY IN ALL SITUATIONS. This post is irrelevant to what you are attempting to prove.

Another one about school...couldn't find anything else?

I believe this one was posted right around the school discussion also....This post was batting .000. Not a good average.

And another swing and another miss. Where have I told you how it works?

As are your claims that I am not allowed to post in here because: I DO NOT HAVE KIDS!

Politicians have experience in politics, you and I do not. We can't post in those topics according to you because we don't have experience.
