I did too. I'm hoping big time that Schrand gets a job next year. I know of one person that if given an opportunity to become a head coach will call Schrand right away to see if he's available.

I know for one thing that Listerman would leave on his own and not get fired. He has the best job in Northern Kentucky and wouldnt leave for a school that he doesnt know what kind of players he will get.

I have also heard the rumor (about Coach L being forced out), but I think it would be a huge mistake if the Administration allowed it to happen. Coach L is a wonderful teacher, outstanding coach and more importantly a devout Catholic, who leads his life as a true Catholic. If I had a son, and he played basketball, heck if he just went to CovCath, I couldn't think of a better person for him to look up to.

 

To all those who would like to see Coach L leave, I have a question: Tell me please, other than my man Mote, who else has taken CovCath to the promised land, that is the Sweet Sixteen? Yes Mr. Tieman did one time, and, and, and, come on gentlemen who else? For all the great teams that have played at CovCath over all these years it's, Mote 5, Mike 2, and Dan 1! BTW don't tell me he had the talent and no one else ever did, don't at all want to hear that one at all!

Coach L has single handedly driven away great players who undoubtedly would have helped the team (think Brett Sutton as an example). There are also many athletes who are currenly at the school or who have transferred to other schools that I'm not going to mention who would help the program but didn't becasue of Coach L's handling of situations. (Don't think this is sour grapes either because I never played.) You can't put the best five players on the court if you don't have the best 15 or so on your roster.

 

Another point which others have already brought up is Coach Maile and Coach Schrand leaving as a result of Coach L. Many, many players who I've talked to that were coached by all three have said Maile and Schrand are better coaches than Listerman. This leads me to my next point.

 

You can ask anyones opinion on this subject and you'll get a wide variety of answers, but honestly what it comes down to is what the players who play under Coach L think. And if you talk to the players most of them will even tell you their unhappiness with coach L. It wouldn't be a good idea to mention current players but past players will tell you that he brought negativity and caused a lot of dissent among the team.

 

And my final point is this. You and I both know that there are many times in your mind you can think of that he made bad choices in his in-game coaching. And yeah I know it's easy for me to point out his mistakes, because I'm not the one that has the pressure of making those decisions. However there are some mistakes that are inexcusable. One of these times that stick out in my mind is the "play" he called on the last possession of the game against Holmes last year. He didn't even give his players a chance at winning.

 

With all of that honestly I think Coach L leaving would be one of the best things that could happen to the CovCath basketball program. Maybe they can get a coach that matches the talent of the players they have year in and year out.

In this fast, ever-changing corrupt world, wouldn't it be nice to hang tight with some of Sheriff Andy Taylor's good values? Please tell me that we haven't all but forgotten them. The biggest shame of all of this is to poison the minds of young men who could be missing a great opportunity to be guided by one of the most loyal, honest, and philosophically sound men that they'll ever be lucky enough to know. It's sounds downright misguided for people to be calling for the head of someone who would be sorely missed and very hard to replace. When you're privileged enough to have such a class act why on earth would you want to see an era of integrity end in such a sad manner? You don't know what you've got until it's gone. Wake up America!

Horrible example. Brett Sutton is an example of a kid who wasn't committed to basketball. That's fine. There are plenty of other opportunities for a high school kid and Brett saw those. Good for him and he has done quite well in life after high school basketball.

 

Secondly, just because the intramural league is competitive doesn't mean that there are guys who can compete on the floor and in practice on a regular basis. Don't kid yourself and don't disrespect your peers who bust their butt daily to get better and win for their school - and coach.

 

I would agree that Coach Maile & Coach Schrand were both well-liked by just about every player (and parent) in the entire program. How couldn't you? They're great coaches and even better people. The way that situation happened upset many people - myself included. However, two wrongs do not make a right.

 

Coach L has plenty of critics. People don't like the way he jumps up and down on the sidelines. People don't like his substitution patterns. People don't like the way he puts his arm around the ref during a free throw. But, somehow, people still like Coach L.

 

Why?

 

It's because he's put his heart & soul into that school, both academically & athletically. It's because he does things the right way. It's because he'd give you the shirt off of his back without hesitation (although it'd probably be sweaty).

Thanks to those who had the courage to post the criticim of Coach L. I have no doubt that he is a greast person. I have been watching basketball for 60 years and I have a lot of doubts about his coaching skills and so do a lot of other highly knowledgeable fans.

His treatment of Schrand cost him a lot of credibility.

Coach Listerman is a great person and Coach. Would be a huge loss for Cov Cath.

 

Make up your mind you loathe nepotism at NCC, but somehow that makes Listerman a great person?
