Coach L has single handedly driven away great players who undoubtedly would have helped the team (think Brett Sutton as an example). There are also many athletes who are currenly at the school or who have transferred to other schools that I'm not going to mention who would help the program but didn't becasue of Coach L's handling of situations. (Don't think this is sour grapes either because I never played.) You can't put the best five players on the court if you don't have the best 15 or so on your roster.

You probably know the kids walking the halls at CCH more than so I'll ask: Who are the players that aren't playing because of Coach L that would be better than the current juniors and seniors?

Would Ryan Schrand and Dick Mailey agree?

No one cares if they agree! Ryan Schrand's only connection at CCH is he coached a few years. It didn't work out, let it go, move on for crying out loud. He didn't go to school there.

This is your typical example of some parents and fans thinking that their sons or players are better than they really are. Sometimes when parents send their sons to CCH and they donate some money they feel they should have a say in everything that goes on, who the coach is, what kind of offense is run, on and on and on.....

I just looked up records on the CCH site. They speak for themselves.

.782 before this year!! That's impressive. Mote Hills was .789. So I guess Mike Listerman is the only coach listed here who benefitted from having talented kids. The argument that he should have won more with what he had is a crock. Cov Cath is a great school and it is this type of stuff that is embarrassing for Alumni. Please know for every person that says something negative about Mike Listerman there 10 times as many in support of him.

Thanks to those who had the courage to post the criticim of Coach L. I have no doubt that he is a greast person. I have been watching basketball for 60 years and I have a lot of doubts about his coaching skills and so do a lot of other highly knowledgeable fans.

His treatment of Schrand cost him a lot of credibility.

 

I agree that how he handled the Coach Maile & Schrand situation has cost him dearly; likewise, it probably cost his son, Kevin, a head coaching position at Covington Catholic as well.

 

With that said, Mike Listerman is an educator who coaches basketball. As someone who has gotten to know Coach L fairly well over the years, I've butted heads plenty of times with him. However, at the end of the day, I know that I could call him up and ask him for anything reasonable and I am confident that he'd do his best to help me out.

 

Let's keep this in perspective people. This is a high school basketball coach who is with young men more than they're with their families. If I had a son, I know that I'd feel confident in Coach Mike Listerman leading him.

 

After all, there is life after high school basketball. And Coach L does a great job of preparing those KIDS for that.

It is easy to criticize from the stands, or from your own home, or from work.

 

I find it amusing that people who strictly watch games are so quick to criticize. There is a lot of behind the scenes work - that ranges from practice time to community involvement.

 

I would agree that there are better basketball minds than Mike Listerman out there.

Maybe Kevin left because he didn't want to deal with this kind of stuff. You know, the people who have never coached but have all the answers, the people who have never played a minute but know it all, the people who scream and yell at refs and don't know the rules, and the people who listen to others and don't know any better than to jump on the "Bash Coach Listerman" bandwagon.

Another point which others have already brought up is Coach Maile and Coach Schrand leaving as a result of Coach L. Many, many players who I've talked to that were coached by all three have said Maile and Schrand are better coaches than Listerman. This leads me to my next point.

 

You can ask anyones opinion on this subject and you'll get a wide variety of answers, but honestly what it comes down to is what the players who play under Coach L think. And if you talk to the players most of them will even tell you their unhappiness with coach L. It wouldn't be a good idea to mention current players but past players will tell you that he brought negativity and caused a lot of dissent among the team.

 

And my final point is this. You and I both know that there are many times in your mind you can think of that he made bad choices in his in-game coaching. And yeah I know it's easy for me to point out his mistakes, because I'm not the one that has the pressure of making those decisions. However there are some mistakes that are inexcusable. One of these times that stick out in my mind is the "play" he called on the last possession of the game against Holmes last year. He didn't even give his players a chance at winning.

 

With all of that honestly I think Coach L leaving would be one of the best things that could happen to the CovCath basketball program. Maybe they can get a coach that matches the talent of the players they have year in and year out.

Alot of kids that leave the program would leave at any school that has a coach that pushes them to work hard. I have plenty of friends that played for Coach L and although they may not have "loved" Coach L the coach, I can guarantee you they know that he put their best interests first. The only knock that can be made on Coach L is the Schrand situation. And the dedication and time that Coach L has put in to CCH far outweighs that, in my opinion.

Wrong again. There was much much more involved in that decision that can't be discussed on here nor should be. Continue to believe all the rumors you hear, it makes this web site a perfect forum for this nonsense.

How many of you posting on this subject played for Coach Listerman and at what level (varsity, jv, frosh, 8th grade?)

I played for Coach Listerman at Highlands in the late 70's as a freshmen. There wasn't a better man on the court or off the court. I hated to see him leave when he did, he was made right out of the mold of Coach Shields.
