I'm pretty sure Beal came off of the bench in 78. The starting PG played in college w/ Scottie Pippen, but I can't pinpoint his name.

 

I knew everyone on this '78 team, at least the ones that played and Beal started as a Fresh w/Moeves at the 2.

 

I personally don't remember playing against Walton or Davis in '78, they were younger.

 

Pippen got drafted in '87, so who would have been on Holmes' team in '78.

The 81 Pioneers have to be the best simply because they were the only ones to ever bring a title back to nky.

 

If we're going on talent though, the 78, 80, and 90 Holmes Bulldogs teams come to mind.

For the people mentioning Highlands of 97 or 98 I don't think they were the best team in that decade from the 9th. Holmes in 90 was very good, and HC in 94 was very good. On that HC team you had two D1 scholarships to EKU and WKU, a Xavier walk on, and an All American at Embory Riddle in the starting lineup. Also, I think Harney was the best player from that decade.

 

I'll take Highlands either year over either team. In 97, they lost in the state finals to one of the best teams out of Louisville in the decade. In 98, they lost in the state quarters in the final minute to eventual state champion Scott County, it was perhaps Scott County's best team ever.

 

Only two losses to NKY teams during the two years both happened in the old Scott tip off classic in November 96. Some guys named Lorenzen, Smith, Stegman, and Shulkers among others were all still on the football field at the time. Pretty impressive run.

This is definitely a tough question as you really can not compare a team that played in the 60's to a team in the 2000's. I have seen alot of basketball from 1967 thru 2008 and I would just say that any team from the 9th Region year after year is a good team or they would not have been there to begin with. It would probably be put best if you would say the best team of each decade 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's you could even say the 50's. We have been very fourtunate to have had great basketball player's come out of

Northern Kentucky. My hat's off to every 9th Region Champion. JD

People get caught up in state results. Its easy to do. The 95 HC team won the AIT, and were the number 1 team in the state for over a month, but didn't make it out of the districts. The 78 Holmes and 81 Sk teams were very lucky to get out of the district. It has a little to do w/ luck just to get down there. Then you can get an awful draw.

The 97 Highlands team would have been even better, but they kept their best point guard on the bench. To this day, I'll never see what Messmer was thinking.

The 67 and 68 teams had Jimmy Cooper who IMHO is/was the greatest point guard that I have ever seen play on the high floor, even to this day. The things that kid could do with a basketball and the vision and the daring that he had was impressive, and he was as close to a sure thing on the Free Throw line as you could have. Really was the glue that drove both the 67 and 68 teams.

If I remember correctly they only won 1 game down there. I still think they had the best player in the decade w/ Harney plus a bunch of help around him. The 91 HC team that beat Holmes in the regional made the final 4 and I think that was longer than the 94 team.

Yes, I would say the 78 Holmes Team was the best. Had it not been for one of the worse no calls in sweet sixteen history, Holmes probably wins the Championship.

Walton and Davis were sophomores on that team. I believe that Davis did see some action in that year.
