Just to let you know how good te Holmes team of 1978 was...Wimzie was their third best player. At Cincinnati's first 3 on 3 (I think it was the first) he was the very best player I saw. In the finals he played against Myron Hughes and other UC players and the only way they could stop him were with hard fouls. He was only awareded the ball out of bounds, but he compensated by getting theball up on the boards some way while being nearly mugged. He was one tough kid and after the game was over everyone congratulated him. The UC players meant no malice, they just could not guard him and a foul was better than an open shot. The rules were changed after that to protect players and penalize excessive fouling.

Had to guard Wimzie a few times in the old Tichenor winter league. Not too much fun. He was one of those guys you hoped you didn't have to guard or have him guard you.

I should have started this thread as 'Greatest 9th Region Team Ever & Forgotten Greats. I guess both threads pretty much could be thrown into the same stew because both have extremely simlilar discussions. Wonder if they could be combined somehow by a mod if it doesn't complicate anything. :confused:

You have no idea what you are talking about. I grew up playing with and against those kids and I know who the best point guard was. As we grew up, he was one of the best point guards in the area. In Freshman basketball, again, same thing. He wound up being around 6'0" and was athletic enough to start center field for their baseball regional championship team that coming spring, so he wasn't a middle school phenom. He was a very crafty lefty who ran the offense very well. I like Randy very much, but he was not the point guard that Spears was. To this day, I have no idea why he didn't play.

That's fine. However, having grown up playing w/ both I would have taken Spears. Randy was very very good athlete. He was good at every sport he tried, until his golf swing wrecked his baseball swing. However, I do not feel that Spears was given a fair shot at Highlands basketball for whatever reason. Some people just have a feel for the game.
