If I remember correctly they only won 1 game down there. I still think they had the best player in the decade w/ Harney plus a bunch of help around him. The 91 HC team that beat Holmes in the regional made the final 4 and I think that was longer than the 94 team.

Walton and Davis were sophomores on that team. I believe that Davis did see some action in that year.

 

I heard from a pretty reliable source today that Davis was a Junior and started that year. Beal was a sophomore and made his only start the entire year in the state finals.

Beal came off the bench almost the entire year, certainly the entire regular season and District, behind Dave Derkson. He made the District All Tourney team without even starting a game.

 

Davis was a junior and was an outstanding player. Later played at the same Arkansas school where Scottie Pippen played. I couldn't say for certain they played together but the timing works out where they could have (Davis out of high school in 79, Pippen in 82 or 83).

 

To tie a couple of other comments in this thread together, Holmes was VERY fortunate to get out of the District in 78; they trailed Holy Cross by 14 with 5 minutes to play, and it was primarily the full court pressure of Davis and Beal that brought them back.

I've also heard the story many times. I believe HC didn't even cross half court very many times in the last 5 minutes. Like I said earlier Beal made his only start of the season in the state finals.

The 2 best 9th Region Teams I've seen were the 2003 Saint Henry Crusaders and the 2004 Covington Catholic Colonels. The didn't possess the best players, not by a long shot, but they were the best TEAMS I've seen. Fundamental and unselfish as they get.

Won 1st round over Louisville Westport, only to go down to

Holmes beat Highlands that year at Highlands, but I want to say that one of their better players missed the game. May have been Muntis. Didn't they used to call him the "Praying" Muntis?

Holmes had lead going into 4th quarter, but Reynolds went to stall game way too early, Highlands got mighty mo on their side and upset the Dawgs.

Nope! John was just a frosh in 67 and never saw the floor as a varsity player. Joe played JV, and maybe saw some limited mop up minutes as a sophomore! Both played on the 68 team that lost to eventual state champion Glasgow, in what the Glasgow players will tell you was there toughest game on their way to the state title.

 

1967 lost in the finals to Earlington on a last second shot. Still makes me sick to think about it, even today...

I'm pretty sure Beal came off of the bench in 78. The starting PG played in college w/ Scottie Pippen, but I can't pinpoint his name.

 

Phil Davis is who you are thinking of....same school I believe, but not same year.

They were brothers but I don't remember David playing in '78. I think this was the starting line-up: Beal, Moeves, Schloemer, Wimzie, Meyer. If this team wasn't the best, the were 2nd best behind the only State Champ produced by NKY, SK!

I don't think Roy Meyer was on the 78 team.

The players I remember from 78 were, Schloemer, Moeves (father of minor league pitcher Derek from Highlands), John "Bud" Wimzie, Tony Malik, Elliott Simpson, Ricky Walton, Dave Derkson, Moe Greene, and Dicky Beal.

 

Lest we forget, that team was forged from the steel of first round losses in the Sweet 16 in 1976 and 1977 when they won region but lost to Henry Clay and Murray in successive years.

If not for the 4th quarter stall tactic in 79, Holmes would have run off 5 straight region titles.

 

The 1980 Holmes team was really good. They had the unfortunate draw in the Sweet 16. Last game on Thursday, quarterfinal game that ran late on Friday in which they didn't get to hotel until after 1 a.m., then up the next morning to play a very very good Owensboro team.
