Can't disagree as they brough back the title, but they also were the luckest team that the Ninth Region has ever sent down, as they shouldn't have make it out of the district that year. Something being lucky is better than being good, but when your lucky and good, it sure helps...

Just wanted to mention that while CovCath never brought home the title, no one else in the Ninth Region has ever done what those Mote Hils teams did from 67 trough 71 and that is to win five straight Ninth Region Championships. BTW to show you just how good the 68 CovCath team was, we played Campbell County in the brand new Holmes gym and beat them by a 31 points. No, that not a typo we won the Ninth Region Championship game by 31 points over Campbell County, think any team has pulled off that big of a win off since? BTW you also have to realize that Mote never would leave in the starters to run up a score, they were just that good.

 

One other thing, in 64/65 our CovCath Coaches were Mr. Mote Hils, Mr. Hep Cronin (father of current "UC Coach" Mick Cronin) and Mr. Ken Shields. Talk about some men who could teach you some Bball....

in the District 72-70 2OT. What a game. The region

that year from top to bottom was very strong. 33rd

district had 7 teams and was very strong.

I read the book, I read the papers while it was happening, many will tell you that SK was lucky to get out of the District that year. That isn't a shot at all, just a fact! To win the Sweet Sixteen you have got to be very, very lucky and that includes getting a good sweet sixteen draw and all were in line for SK that year, besides they were a very, very good basketball team.

Was Derkson on the 67 team? And was it his brother (David Derkson) that was the starting point guard, ahead of Dicky Beal, for most of the year for the 78 Bulldogs? The 67 CovCath Schloemer/78 Holmes Schloemer connection is pretty well documented, but I haven't heard the Derkson/Derkson connection discussed.

 

 

They were brothers but I don't remember David playing in '78. I think this was the starting line-up: Beal, Moeves, Schloemer, Wimzie, Meyer. If this team wasn't the best, the were 2nd best behind the only State Champ produced by NKY, SK!

Maybe you weren't discounting them exactly, but people don't mention very often that Holmes was also very lucky to get out of the district. Yet they mention that SK was very lucky. I think Holmes from 78 was the best team. I'm not big on the well SK won it all argument. While it was obviously a great accomplishment like you said a whole lot of luck goes into winning a state title.

 

For the people mentioning Highlands of 97 or 98 I don't think they were the best team in that decade from the 9th. Holmes in 90 was very good, and HC in 94 was very good. On that HC team you had two D1 scholarships to EKU and WKU, a Xavier walk on, and an All American at Embory Riddle in the starting lineup. Also, I think Harney was the best player from that decade.

I'm pretty sure Beal came off of the bench in 78. The starting PG played in college w/ Scottie Pippen, but I can't pinpoint his name.

There was a team that won the 9th Region Championship by more than 31 points since that '68 CCH team Old Guy. The '72 Holy Cross Indians beat Holmes 90-58 in the Championship game that year. Actually, this may have been the most dominating regional performance ever. HC beat Newport 97-69 in the opener, then beat Conner (at Conner) 99-76 in the semis before the 90-58 championship game.

The Indians went on to beat Laurel Co. in the State Tourney opener where starting point guard Joey Meier blew out his knee. Without his leadership, they lost the next game to Bryan Station with Goose Givens & Ted Hundley.

Have to mention Coach Jack Brock's William Grant (Covington) squads of the late 50's -early 60's. Four trips to the Sweet 16. The 1956-1957 WGHS team was the first African American team to win a district tournament in the KHSAA tournament. His best squads were led by Tom Thacker who has the distinction of winning an NCAA championship at the Univ. of Cincinnati, an NBA championship with the Celtics and an ABA championship with Indiana.

My favorite team since I've followed HS basketball in NKY is the 2003 St. Henry Crusaders!!!

 

Probably not the best of all time. But the best of my time maybe.
