I assume Artis Gilmore had a big game in the tourney agaisnt UK.

Dan Issel fouled out on a very questionable call in that Jacksonville game.

Dan Issel will and always be my favorite UK basketball of all time. I remember listening to all their games on the radio before I went to bed every nite. I was just talking about him last night with some friends. Thanks. JD

I would think that would be safe to say.

Dan Issel was imo the best to ever play at U.K.! I can't hardly pick one player as "the best ever" though, there have been too many great ones. Although it would be hard to pick anyone over Dan Issel.

Anyway, Dan Issel along with Kevin Grevey, Ken Walker and Jeff Sheppard are my all time U.K. players.

Also, remember that was a time when Freshmen did not play "varsity" and Issel had these numbers in a 3 year time span ;).

Dan Issel holds the Season scoring record - 948pts. (1969-70), Carrer Scoring record-2,138pts. (1968-70), Single season scoring per game avg. 33.9 pts. per game (1969-70), Carrer scoring avg. per game avg. 25.8 (1968-70)

Issel also holds the U.K. carrer rebounding records - 1,078reb. (12.9 avg. per game)

I'd love to see a tape of the Issel/Pistol matchups.

I think Issel fouled out with about 13 minutes to play when Wedeking stopped in front of him around midcourt and Issel ran into him as he was looking around and running up the court. Ref called it a charge for his 5th foul.

UK played game without him but no one was close to 7'2" and remember that Burrows was 7' as well.

Dan Issel, one of the best to ever play for the Blue and White.

Issel was a monster!

Agreed! :thumb:

The biggest hands I've ever seen. He spoke and handed out trophies at the YMCA basketball banquet in 1969. He shook my hand when he handed me my trophy I think his hand wrapped around my twice.

While roaming the net, I found an article about Jacksonville basketball and it had this interesting little tidbit.

Gilmore points to the regional finals of the 1970 NCAA Tournament as an example of how trash talking can backfire. Before the game between Kentucky and JU, a Wildcats booster paid to have signs posted that read: "Jacksonville Who?" posted around the teams' hotels in Columbus, Ohio. Gilmore and his teammates saw the signs and used them as motivation for a 106-100 upset against Adolph Rupp's favored Kentucky team. Gilmore had 24 points and 20 rebounds.

"I was always told, 'You don't do anything to fire up your opponents,'" Gilmore said. "And that's what they were able to do and they gave us the incentive to play better."

Mike Pratt averaged 19.3 ppg on the 1970 team. Remmember also that UK was without the services of Mike Casey who averaged 19.1 the year before because of injury. Pratt also averaged 16 on the 68-69 squad.

Dan was a local call-in show about a year ago and I asked him if remembered the name of the Jacksonville guard. He laughed and said "I sure do...Vaughn Wedeking:. The reason I asked him was...I also knew the answer. I hated the call, it was a trick play on the guards part.
