Garrard County Coaching Situation

Featured Replies

Coop will do a great job and desreves the shot if he wants it.

Explain how. In seven years as defensive coordinator, what has he done to prove himself a worthy candidate for the head coaching position? Let's take a took at numbers. I know points per game aren't the only thing on defense, but when your defense can't stop people, that makes it tough on the offense.

2001: 256 points allowed (23.3 per game)

2002: 202 (20.2)

2003: 226 (18.8)

2004: 259 (23.5) forfeit with Danville not included

2005: 319 (29.0)

2006: 420 (38.2)

2007: 338 (28.2)

As you can tell, the defense has gotten steadily worse. It's probably no surprise that the wins have dried up from the earlier years as well. But in seven years Garrard is only under 20 per game once...and that's not exactly against a torrid schedule.

For what it's worth, in Garrard County High School history, 1964-2007, four of the worst ten defensive seasons have occured on the Stonebraker/Cooper watch: 2006 (worst), 2007 (second worst), 2005 (4th) and 2004 (10th).

I don't think that looks like someone who has earned a shot. Garrard County could do so much better.

It's all a moot point. Garrard AD, Jim Freeman, told Larry Vaught of the Danville A-M that the next coach must have head coaching experience. Coop does not have that.:argue:

That kinda sucks for some of these guys that are coaching at BIG schools right now as an assistant. How else is a guy supposed to get involved in being a head coach? I see that as a mistake, to just rule that out on that one criteria....shoot, what about Dave Campbell??? He was "just" an assistance at Georgetown College...would that not be enough experience?

Looks like GC has had a terrible defense for a number of years running. I didn't realize it was that bad.

18.8, while not good, is manageable...your goal should be to at least score 3 or 4 TD's a game....but man, 38.2 ppg....that is TERRIBLE

Anybody got any new info on who is interested?

Hey GCHS_UK9, are you the stat keeper or what?? I've never seen such detailed breakdowns of seasonal stats. I agree with LCPATS and MR. Network - Cooper does deserve a shot at the head job. He's been in the system for 7 years as second in command and I think he would do a great job. Sounds like the community needs to understand athlete turnover especially at a small school like Garrard.

What other opportunities? Perry left in 1996 and Jeff Hester was hired. After Hester resigned in 2000, Stonebraker was hired. By my count that says the Garrard County job has only been open once since he left.

I think it's probably an assumed fact that Perry wants the Danville job after Harp leaves. I think Marty Jaggers might have wanted the same when he left Lincoln. But Danville won't forget them if they wait out Harp in another location.

Their best friends so it won't matter. One of them will get the job when Harp decides to go which could be in a year or two.

Not a stat keeper at all. Just have some information that's been handed down to me from some previous folks. I understand why some would think current assistants deserve a shot, but the Garrard program has gotten somewhat stale. I don't mean to imply that Cooper was a bad coach - I just think it would be wise to step out of the current system.

I think the community of Lancaster does understand athlete turnover and how schools are affected by it. But even when talent is down, coaches should still be in control and players should improve. The problem with Garrard County is that so many players never improved under the previous staff.

Trust me, no one is expecting Garrard County to win state championships on a yearly basis. But if you look back at the last seven years Garrard County rarely beat any team of significance. That, to me, speaks to poor coaching. The district they have competed in has rarely been top-heavy, yet the previous staff never truly sniffed a district title with the exception of 2004.

What the people of Garrard County would like to see is a new face with a new style - the Stonebraker & Co. style is played-out.

Agreed. But it doesn't seem like Harp is in any hurry to leave. Whenever Sam Harp leaves Danville I'm sure Jerry Perry and Marty Jaggers will be the two favorites to be his replacements. But that status wouldn't be altered if Perry was the coach at Garrard, just like it wouldn't with Jaggers being at Mercer.

I am not so sure coach Perry is really that interested in the Danville job. That may surprise some.

I would like to see what some of the GC players of those 9-3 seasons say about the 'not improving' comments. Many Frosh started in 06 in a 2 win season and they improved to 5 wins in 07. I wonder if they think they improved.

I'm right on with you studwr, it seems that people are quick to judge when coaches/teams are struggling. It is apparent that kids during the Stonebraker/Cooper era made many progressions. I don't think they got the support they needed from the community and was quick to want a change. I know Stonebraker & Co. had to deal with alot of grade and behavior issues that were out of their hands. With small schools, we all know that is a tough pill to swallow. I wouldn't judge a coach on that. Now if this staff reloaded tons of talent each year and still produced 2-9 seasons, I would agree with GCHS UK9 that there needs to be a change but I highly doubt that was the case. I think alot of people in Garrard need to realize that and provide a helping hand instead of a noose. Thanks studwr for seeing my point.

Right, and I know Danville had a discipline issue during the 06 playoffs that occured right after a team meeting. Earlier at Danville, Harp had to suspend on of his better players for multiple playoff games for a problem. Is it Harp's fault those players made some bad choices. The past GC staff had to suspend some players too and did that when it was needed. I don't think it was their fault that players made some bad choices. As a young person you take your lumps, learn and move on.

How many district titles has GC ever won? A couple or three. I don't think GC has been favored to win their district in the past 10 years. They have been runner-up in 3 of the past 5 years, though. I don't understand the district comment that was made.

Maybe the biggest coaching issue in the past couple years has been the schedule. GC played 8 games against region finalists or better in the last 2 years. Then, they played some regular season district champs beyond that. It was probably too difficult for as young of a team as they had. It maybe would have been better to create a schedule to build confidence in their young players. I know the talent is on the way back up with the Juniors to be, though. That would aid Coop or any other coach stepping into GC.
