How do you know the talent pool is improving over the next 7-8 years? Did the kids have a great middle school year or is it based on little league success? Hard to imagine how you can determine talent pool for kids that young. Educate me!

While I certainly sense a touch of sarcasm in your question, I can say that Garrard County hasn't won a regional championship in their history. They were runners-up in 1967 (10-1), 1993 (12-1) and 1995 (10-3).

 

Take that with a grain of salt, however, because I'm sure you know the playoffs were a little harder to reach prior to 1991. Since the expansion of the postseason Garrard County has been to the playoffs 13 times (out of 18 possible chances) and won 11 games in their 13 appearances. Unfortunately over the last few seasons the playoff losses have not been close, with average losses by 38.5 points.

 

I'm not sure that past regional championships are a good measuring stick. How many had Boyle County won prior to Chuck Smith's arrival? What made Mercer County look so appealing to Marty Jaggers? Where was Rockcastle County on the map when Tom Larkey showed up?

 

What is apparent is that the previous staff wasn't getting the job done and hiring a head coach from that staff would be ridiculous, although your previous posts suggest otherwise. You mentioned earlier that Garrard County was a small school - 750-ish students is small? What the program needs more than anything is someone with some discipline to come in a run the show. Too many off- and on-field distractions over the last few years have rubbed the shine off of what used to be a solid program. Garrard County can still be a solid program with the right hire. So while some folks want to badmouth Garrard because their boy isn't getting hired. That's provides no credibility to your argument and does nothing to promote the program.

Jaggers definitely went to Mercer County because of the impending consolidation. But I don't think anyone knew it was coming as quick as it did. Heck, I'd been hearing about a Mercer/Harrodsburg merger for 10-15 years.

 

As for the number of off the field issues at Boyle County, I can't be sure. I know there were a few, but several times issues happened after players had graduated from Boyle. What I do know is that with those issues at Boyle, they were still able to maintain success on the field. Issues at Garrard always seemed to result in split teams, suspensions and losses.

 

As for Hester, I'll be the first to admit he didn't do as good of job as many expected. Part was he inherited a much tougher district that Jerry Perry had. Second, he moved up from Class A to AA. Third, he didn't have as much talent as Perry. But hiring Jeff Hester was a stop-gap measure by Garrard to try and keep the same people in place that had been there during the excellent run by Coach Perry.

 

If hiring a former assistant to replace the winningest coach in school history didn't work, why should we expect hiring an assistant from a mediocre-at-best coach would turn out any better?

Not at all. I'm not stupid. I know that Garrard had loads of talent during the 1990s and that talent (particularly quality big linemen in my opinion) isn't there right now. But who is to blame for playing varsity games with JV players? Why were there more seniors on the last couple teams? Was it because they couldn't play, didn't want to work, or didn't want to play for the coach?

 

I'm sure the assistant coaches are loyal. I know almost all of them and I know that they are sharp football minds. Many of them wouldn't have enough experience to be a head coach right now...that doesn't mean they couldn't be in the future.

 

As for my wish list, and we'll highlight the word WISH, I wouldn't mind to see Jerry Perry make a return to Lancaster. I'm realistic though, and I'm not sure that could ever happen.

 

I wouldn't mind seeing Mike Settles (a finalist for the job in 2001) hired if Lincoln County doesn't pull the trigger first. I've seen the guy at Trimble County's name on the Madison Southern list and he might be good at Garrard.

 

I'm sure there are more that are escaping me right now. But it would be foolish for Garrard to simply promote the next man in line. Look at your options - there might be applications from places we've never considered - and make the best possible hire. Garrard County football is getting stale and it needs a new face at the top. Why not shop around?

Of course Garrard County should be competitive in their district. Casey County and Wayne County? Taylor County and Jackson County? Somerset is the only school that should have a traditional upper hand on the Lions, and I've seen many years where the Jumpers weren't very good. Where they stand now, it's a struggle to beat the Caseys and Taylors of the world. That shouldn't happen.

 

As for "good" Garrard teams, there have been a few more than the Perry era, but not many. But just because a school hasn't always been good doesn't mean it can't be. Little-known programs all over the commonwealth pop up all the time and win games, usually because they finally made a good hire. Garrard County shouldn't be any different.

Garrard is going to have to hope several things happen: quality candidates apply; a teaching position is available because the board office doesn't seem to throw money at athletics like say Mercer County; and patience.

Back in the Perry era you didnt have a bunch of imature kids like the coaching staff has had the past couple of years. It is not the coaches job to make sure the kids act right after they leave school that is the parents job!!! They should respect the coaches and half the kids don't and I blame that on the parents!!! The discpline starts at home not at school, if they don't at home then they want have it at school.

No doubt about discipline being a home issue. It is a tough thing for a coach to fix when mom and dad don't back him. You would think discipline could be a problem in any program. Garrard may just have to treat parents the way other schools do.
