After losing to St. Pat four times this year at the Varsity level, Deming easily beat St. Pat tonight at the freshman level by playing a Varsity starter. Any thoughts out there about playing your varsity starters in Freshman games?

Do you know anything about the Deming freshman team? Has that freshman been playing on the freshman team all year? I mean a lot of small schools have freshman who would start for their freshman team, and also start for their Varsity team...

No problem with it. Freshmen need all the experience they can get, no matter if they are starting varsity or not. He is going to be playing with those kids in the next few years and he needs to develop some chemistry with those players.

I'm not buying the chemistry argument. A lot of these teams have won all year without their classmate playing varsity. There will be plenty of time to develop chemistry in the offseason.

If anything I could see it working in the other way & creating a rift between teams. I know I wouldn't want to bust my butt all season only to have my spot & role on the team handed over to someone else.

The Deming varsity starter is a true freshman, and yes should be allowed to play freshman ball. Also heard the other "varsity starter" was out due to sickness?

As opposed to what? This is high school basketball, not many redshirt years allowed at this level.

Let him play. There were an instance a couple years back with our freshman team when we took our team to the opposing team's gym and had a varsity starter that was a true freshman. He went just to go with his future team and show support. The varsity coach told the freshman coach not to play him. Shortly after arriving the opposing team's coach came over and boasted about how many games they had one againest some of the larger counties in the region and how they were gonna take it easy on them. The varsity coach becomes aware of this by a phone call from the frshman coach and the varsity coach gives the go ahead. After rounding up a pair of shoes and a jersey the varsity player plays most of the game, dropping 25 pts while dishing out numerous assists and was able to get everyone involved. Several of the players got into double digits scoring because the focus was around the varsity stater and he passed well. That team won by 12. IMO without the varsity starter they loose. He went on to only play againest opponents that were a challenge.

IMO let him play, helped him and the team's chemistry, they went on to win the freshman tournament. The team's senior year they won distric tournament at the varsity level.

Worked out for us and that team clicked from then on out. A lot of times when a player starts for 4 years that player doesn't get to play with his senior class all at one time because we all know its not everyday that a freshman(especially an entire freshman team) starts all 4 years of varsity

They were just tryin to get ready for the freshman tournament. I think St.Pat would do the samething. Its just a good thing his brother was sick if u know what i mean.

I thought it was against some kind of rule to START varsity and play freshman ball. You can sit the varsity bench and play freshman ball all you want, but I didn't think it was allowed to actually start varsity and be able to play freshman too.

Does everyone really think that this is in the best interest for the program?? Not knowing the complete story, but taking a real good guess, It sounds like this was just for the win. A coach must think about the long term effects of this move. While the coach may have gained a win, he may have lost the respect of the frosh players that have been there all year long. Is a win really that important to risk the future of the program?

In the bigger schools usually when a player earns a starting varsity position he wouldn't play at the freshmen level. Small schools are a different animal as numbers of players available for each level is limited.

However, if the player hasn't played frosh all year and then moves down for a tourney or a rivalry win then thats not right.

It's not against any rule. Kids play JV and varsity, freshmen and jv, sometimes all three if they're a freshman.

For those who say its "not right", why? If St. Pat had won the game would anyone have cared? By saying its "not right" do you mean it was unfair? If so, exactly when do you think this group of St. Pat freshmen will be ready to compete with this kid? If you're St. Pat wouldn't you want your freshman who are going to compete against him the next three years have a chance to play against him to see how they match up, who can guard him, what works agaisnt him, what they need to improve on to make him less of an impact at the varsity level?

To those who say it was unfair to the other Deming freshman who didn't get to start I say they weren't starting to begin with and apparently won't be starting over this kid at any level the next three years. Get better or get used to it.

Let him play. Its not like its Scott Co or anything. Deming is a small school and if they want to do what they have to do to win a trophy that will collect dust let them play the kid.

Let him play. Alot of small schools will let a kid play freshman, sit out JV and then start varsity.
Agreed.:thumb:

I'm pretty sure the KHSAA has a rule limiting players to how many quarters of basketball they can play in on week. At least I know they do for fotball. Therefore if he is playing JV and Varsity as well he could possibly go over the limit.

I don't think a governing body that forces a player to play at least 8 quarters in one day as part of their state tournament, is regulating what they do in a week.

Trust me. I know there used to be a rule for football. I'm not sure about basketball.

Here is the complete story. Deming is a small school. Which is no secret to most of you. Last night was the first freshman game they have had this year. So they have not taken a spot from anyone. They had others scheduled but were cancelled for various reasons. The "varsity starters" had the intentions to play the entire freshman schedule. There are only 5 freshman on the team the other 2 players are 8th graders. So if Deming dosen't play the two then they don't have enough for a team. Is that fair to the other? They are not breaking any rule. So why is everyone crying over this?

I remember Nicholas County back in the early 90's. There was a good ballplayer by the name of Daniel Brown who started varsity I believe Brad Allison did also. They both started varsity and only lost one freshman game the entire season. I never heard anyone cry over that. So what gives?
