I have nothing against Ronald Reagan, but for goodness sake I am sick of hearing his name an average of 8,353,134 times per republican debate. If you're thinking of watching a republican debate in the future, don't. Here is what you'll hear... "Ronald Reagan" x 8,353,134 (all candidates) "Washington is fundamentally broken" x 5000 (Romney) "I was a governor...governors are better than senators" x 10000 (Huck, Romney) "I am a patriot" x 5000 (McCain) "You attacked me" x 2000 (Romney, McCain) "I invented the surge and got Rumsfeld canned" x 10000 (McCain) And, in the 3 minutes they let him speak, from Ron Paul, you will hear him attempt to tell the truth about our economy, our dealings in the Middle East, etc., and try to turn the debate into a discussion of real issues...unfortunately, that's not how it works these days. And, formerly, you would have heard... "911" x 10 (Rudy, but he didn't get much air time either) But, anyway, back to the point. I'd like to see someone be their own man (*cough-Ron Paul-cough*), instead of invoking the spirit or Ronald Reagan and offering up incense and prayers to him. Seriously, I know he doesn't have a chance to win, but the more I watch these guys, the more I like Ron Paul. If nothing else, he tries to talk about real issues and tries to tell the truth about them instead of sugar coating it for us poor Americans.

January 31, 200818 yr I am. It means nothing to me as a voter and I tune out when they begin talking about it. Remember I was 14 the first election and 18 the second. ON the second one, my parents told me I would vote Democrat because that is what we do in our family. We are Democrats and we ONLY vote for Democrats. If Joseph Stalin would have been the candidate, we would vote Democrat. If Adolf Hitler was the Democrat candidate, I think they would consider voting Democrat. My 87 year old grandmother will not vote for a Republican. She says her daddy would turn over in his grave and haunt her forever if she did. If she doesn't like the Dem on a ticket, she just will not vote at all rather than vote against them. I would hate to be that one sided.

I was told my grandparents would be turning over in their graves because of my 2000 and 2004 votes for a Republican President. That generation must have some fixation on dead people's movement in their graves.:lol:

Basically all he did was out-spend the already weakened USSR, and make up an economic system that only helped those who didn't need help. I remember in 2004 they had a show on the Discovery channel called the "greatest american" in which people voted on who was the greatest american. One of their esteemed panelists was none other than Anne Coulter who claimed Regan was the greatest american. This was shortly after he died and so he won. He beat out George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and MLK. Regan had a greater influence on our nation than those men? Give me a break.

If the Republican controlled Congress gets part of the blame for the out of control spending here in the 2000's, doesn't the Democrat controlled Congress of the 1980's get part of the blame, too? That seems logical.

And re-building a military that was suffering from post-vietnam and archaic infrastructure. The Carter admin devasted the military by cutting funding for tech, etc. Not only did RR help restore the infrastructure but brought esprit de corp back. This is one of the biggest factors always overlooked in the Reagan presidency.

While I agree with a lot of what you said there were other factors that played very big and contributed to the demise of the USSR. 1. The Solidarity movement in Poland in the late 70's and early 80's showed that some of the satellites had heroes who longed for freedom and began to work on the inside to bring about reform. 2. The USSR began to be horribly overextended and most began to see that right after Reagan took office. They could not keep up their satellite states and their own huge country. 3. A changing of the internal guard with the old revolutionaries dead and dying brought new leadership to the Soviet like Gorbachov and later Yeltsin. I've always thought they helped the transition be less violent and bloody than it could have been.
