January 18, 200818 yr The first black head coach in UK basketball history faced a lot of opposition because of it. Now they prepare to hire the first black head coach in UK football history and making that comparison is not related? I agree that it is relevant to the conversation.

I somehow thought this thread would turn to being more about Tubby than the positive news about Joker, guess I was wrong....

Now they prepare to hire the first black head coach in UK football history and making that comparison is not related? There are black people who thinks/thought Tubby shouldn't be the UK basketball coach too:confused: I think Joker is a bad move because he is an unproven at the HC position not because he is black, white, or whatever.
January 18, 200818 yr You can't be serious. They are totally related. There's no doubt in my mind why a lot of people didn't like Tubby, and there's no doubt that Joker will face the same problems. Let's don't be blind to the facts. To be honest that comparison didn't even enter my mind, and I really question that it is a reason that "a lot of people didn't like Tubby." I think thats just an easy argument for the pro-Tubby group to use against the anti-Tubby group. Anyway... back to the topic at hand. I think Joker has been a big part of UK's success (both his play calling and his recruiting), and I'm glad to see he'll be staying in blue.
January 18, 200818 yr Wow, Some of you absolutely kill me ALWAYS bring Tubby into something...and no, IMHO you did not have to bring Tubby into this and that is what you call thread jacking, Right? Well Congrats Joker, but this is not about congratulating you, it is about comparing you to Tubby...
January 18, 200818 yr I mean Joker seems like a hot comodity right now, but if this is indeed Rich's last year, I think Joker would still be around next year, but what if theres like some great coach available, we kind of locked ourselves in and can't go after them but I hope this works out like UK is hoping it will...

I agree there are LOTS of different legitimate reasons that Tubby was disliked and I have no problem with any of them except one. The one reason LRCW mentioned is the only one I object to as invalid and it is only a small piece of the puzzle. It was, however, a very real dislike by a lot of folks based simply on his skin color. I heard enough of it right here in our little town long before Tubby coached his first game. And it wasn't an excuse to oppose the TBers as mobaar suggested, it was pure and obvious bigotry. Over time I think it faded quite a bit and other coaching related issues took the forefront in the Tubby bashing quiver. I hope the fanbase has grown in that area and that will not be a source of any opposition for Joker. As you point out, there are legitimate reasons for some to doubt Jokers ability as a head coach which have nothing to do with his color. I respect that 100%. Semperfi is right, this doesn't need to be about Tubby. I don't think LRCW meant to make it about Tubby, but rather just to voice his concern that he hoped a certain portion of the fan base doesn't form a negative opinion about Joker from the get-go because of his color. That said, I wish Joker the best and really I like this announcement. I think he deserves a shot and I think he is an up and coming coach with a lot of potential ahead of him that UK needs to hang on to.

Well Congrats Joker, but this is not about congratulating you, it is about comparing you to Tubby... No it isn't thread jacking. Neither LRCW or myself have been on the love/hate Tubby debate trail. We have no reason to drag that into here and that isn't what he was doing. Read my post just above this one. The point was will Joker face any racial opposition from the fan base, because they have shown in the past (with Tubby) that they are capable of it.
January 18, 200818 yr This is true. Jimbo Fisher will make $720,000 as the coach-in-waiting at Florida State. Is it possible that Mitch Barnhart will pay Joker half that amount? Does Brooks make Bowden money? I like Joker, but you can't compare him to Jimbo Fisher. Not yet, anyway.
January 18, 200818 yr I dont think the racial aspect will be as bad as it was with Tubby, seems like theres less of that stuff in football. If Miss State can over come it, UK should be fine with it!
January 18, 200818 yr Good news for Joker and good news for UK. He is a quality coach and recruiter. This will be good for the program and keep Joker from jumping ship to another school.

It's definitely not Rich's last year. They extended is contract to 2011. I really doubt Joker would still be here in 2011 without this arrangement.
