January 19, 200818 yr This is great news IMO. I was hoping they would do this awhile back. I feel like Joker has earned it and has a lot of great ties from his Notre Dame, South Carolina days. This is hopefully good news for my old buddies too:)
January 19, 200818 yr And I hope Joker doesn't destroy the program. Rondo, Morris, Bradley, & Crawford destroyed the program.
January 19, 200818 yr Rondo, Morris, Bradley, & Crawford destroyed the program. This is a football thread, but that is one class that never really lived up to the hype. Now back to the topic. I think this is the best move UK could have made. Joker has proven himself as a worthy recruiter. He gets the most out of his player IMO. I think when his time comes he'll be successful. UK has been waiting and waiting for a good football team (staduim attendence proves this). I only can only hope that we can keep the success going. I feel that once you reach a certain amount of success the hardest thing to do is maintaining that success. Hopefully Rich and Joker can keep it going.:thumb: As far as the race card with Tubby, I never heard anything (not once) about that when he was coaching at UK from the NKY area and at no point do I feel like that was or had any reason for him leaving.
January 19, 200818 yr Not that I do not think Joker will not be a good head coach one of these days (and possibly at UK), but I am just not a fan of promoting within in college sports. I can understand that but in UK's positon what are your alternatives? Either hire a retread and hope that they are better than what they've shown, take a chance on someone who did well at a smaller school (that worked out so well with Mumme), or promote someone like Joker who can recruit and has a good offensive system. At least he knows what it is like at UK and in the SEC and has proven that he can do his present job.
January 19, 200818 yr IMO this is the right move - for right now. Joker is a proven recruiter. I think we need him to help maintain the sucess we have had the past two years. You can overachieve at times, but to be continually sucessful, you have to have talent year in and year out. I think Joker gives us that. I don't know if he will be a good head coach or not. So I don't know if it is the right move for the future. But I do think he is a lot like Ron Zook. He has an eye for talent and is good at winning kids over. There were some growing pains with Zook, he had to learn how to run a program. I think the Cats have a better opportunity to maintain the sucess they've had with Joker than they do without Joker. I would like to see Brooks move to a football operations position in 2010 and let Joker take over with Brooks helping him maintain all the things that go with running a program. There is so much more to it than X's and O's. By the way Ladiesbballcoach. I love football. Basketball is what you do to fill the time between football season and spring practice.
January 19, 200818 yr Rich aint coaching that long bud...If he coaches past 2009 I'll be stunned He's always said he wants to be the longest tenured coach at UK, and he just received a contract extension until 2011. So, bud, what are you basing your opinion on?
January 19, 200818 yr He's always said he wants to be the longest tenured coach at UK, and he just received a contract extension until 2011. So, bud, what are you basing your opinion on? How often do coaches actually let there contract run out?
January 19, 200818 yr Brooks was also asked if he still wanted to be the longest tenured coach in UK history, which would require Brooks to stay at the school 4 more years through 2011. His response was: “It’s still a goal of mine. But, I’m 66 now and your never know what might happen.” (When asked what would happen if another school approached Phillips) “It might make me go fishing a little earlier.” The tone from Coach Brooks has changed IMO. I look from him to coach 1-2 more years at the most.
