Why "we won't go" quietly:

 

Most states require that a school must be a member of their state association before they are allowed to play a team from their state. For Trinity to play Elder in Cincinnati, Elder must be in good standing with the OHSAA and Trinity must be in good standing with the KHSAA.

St. Xavier was a charter member when age was the main rule on the books.

Where someone lived was not an issue in the beginning. St. Xavier had some students who would ride a ferry boat across the Ohio River to attend their downtown location. Where a child resided was not a factor as far as the KHSAA and it's membership were concerned. Manual and Male could accept students that lived outside Louisville city limits. Students transferred all the time.

 

If certain publics want to leave the arms of the KHSAA, then do so. Start your own athletic association where you can refuse to play any private school and any independent school or any school that has reciprical agreements with neighboring counties, etc. Of course, those trips to Florida and Las Vegas or even Tennessee for baseball, basketball etc. could be curtailed because your new association may or may not be recognized by the National Federation of High School Athletic Association.

 

The privates do not want to leave because it would hurt us financially. The catastrophic insurance is valuable. The pre-set district games in all sports and the "master schedule" in Jefferson County that helps cover the public and privates from being boycotted at the varsity level(some public schools have a hard time filling their schedules because they are not competitive). If the privates were not part of the KHSAA, we could not play Ballard, Male, PRP...it's against the KHSAA rules!

 

The KHSAA is not just about football, as the privates pay their dues for all sports, even those where we have not won a state title.

 

I still contend we could go back to pre-1975 and the Jefferson County Champion is the automatic state champ in the highest class in football. The state at- large schools are the one's who begged to play the privates and the big, bad Jefferson County schools in football.

 

 

We have never ask anyone to leave the KHSAA. We just want to split public and private.

Not referring to special needs kids. What makes you think that they fit the description I used.

I understand. Do you see where I was going with what I said? I was trying to use an example as a definition of recruiting. How the institution gains from the process.

Very few institutions with the success rate of private schools recruit the weakest, most troubled student they can find. Not that they don't have them, they just don't actively recruit them. Use of another term by definition, not recruitment.

You only want a separate champion? In all sports? Just football? 16-24 schools with enrollments varying from 100-1400 does not constitute a division.

 

This state can't agree on standard rules for enrollment from county to county.

Reciprical, non-reciprical.....how about differences independents versus county schools? What's next, boycott Jefferson County and their open enrollment policies?

 

Poor little Beechwood gets kids from several counties. That's who beat LCA. Same for Highlands and they have held their enrollment down for years....they are number one every year in CATS testing and yet they refuse to allow many students from outside their "district" to pay tuition (nominal fee) and attend.....only certain kdis can get in. Northern KY kids should be knocking down the doors to enroll in Ft. Thomas.......

I think I understand what you are trying to say. Let me say this. We feel that our school institution, and our school Community gain from those on the athletic field, those in the classroom, or those in the band ect. Our recruitment doesn't concentrate on one area of the High School experience, and by KHSAA rule, we can't concentrate soley on athletics anyway.

 

I don't have the stats in front of me, but as a general observation, we probably actively recruit students who are not great students, great athletes, great tuba players, ect. We let our sucess speak for itself but if you ask what most of the "energy" is spent on in student recruitment, it is on the average to below average, and down to the troubled (behavior or academically) studnets.

Service towards others is a big part about why we are here. Theier presence in our school is the benifit. Seenig a kid that was negatively labled a "Special Ed. kid" grow and mature, and then graduate from a school he "was not supposed to" is all the benifit his teachers needed.

Bottom line is that for whatever reason Private schools can recruit a kid from anywhere they want, Public's can not legally do this, until that problem or issue is solved there will always be an US vs. THEM mentality.

There are 16 football playing private schools in KY from 1A-6A.

We have kids that do that. We recruit all students that would desire a Catholic School education. No matter if they are rich, poor, black, white, protestant, catholic, or athiest.

Yes, students can be removed from private schools for a variety of things. Students are alerted and informed to this when they enroll. Does that mean a one strike and you're out..NO. We want everyone that walks in our doors as a student to walk out with a High School Diploma, and as a better person. It won't happen, but we would not be doing our job if we didn't try to make it so for everyone.

So what draws your attention to them if they don't do something special? The word recruit means to activily persue. So your telling me that a student with a middle school GPA of 2.3 and a PSAT score of 13 is welcome at your school?

Public schools can not throw kids out and say they have done all they can do for them. So, would you say to have a select envirnment is advantagous? Just curious.
