It certainly is difficult when you are a 1A school playing with students from within your boundaries and facing a team for a large city that can draw enrollment from a larger area with no limitations other than whatever enrollment numbers your administration chooses to enforce. We have fought this for many years and it is never easy. Hazard always remains competative in the sports in which they participate which I feel is a testament to our administration for hiring qualified coaches who are able to motivate young people and help them achieve the most of their talent. Nevertheless, I feel if the playing fields were more level, we along with sevel other 1A schools, would be better able to match up with the competition.

 

What is the solution? I don't know, but it appears to me this is only leading to the KHSAA finally realizing there must be separation of the public and private school when it comes to tournaments or playoffs. I would hate for it to come to that, but in order to work toward equality, maybe that would be the easiest solution to the problem.

So correct RM. And as a player/coach, I can't tell you how many times we talk about not doing things the easy way, or taking the easy way out vs. doing things the right way. And I will always say, that even if you get separation, these same "issues" will be around because not all the "isssues" can be pidgenholed into just public or private.

Offering financial aid and no boundries is recruiting within itself. The process itself is recruiting. Most private supporters have agreed that recruiting students is the process. It's what makes them go. If you get just one athlete in the mix, it can make a difference. This is why in just a short time private schools can and do compete at the highest level. They recruit motivated and diciplined students, and some are athletes. I am not saying that this is bad or wrong or that they shouldn't do it. I just believe that the whole process makes for an unfair advantage.

 

Public schools operate a different way and we should not have to change all publics and you should not have to change what your doing. We should be allowed to split. We voted to do so, overwhelmingly. We don't want to change ,you don't want to change, go to two different set of playoffs.

JCPS schools recruit students. They offer a huge showcase each year that all students are invited to attend to see the specific advantages of each school. Wouldn't you agree that's recruitment?

 

The issue isn't public vs. private. It's not even as simple as open vs. closed enrollment. It's most closely urban vs. rural, but can't even be pinned down to that degree.

 

And, no offense, but the financial aid issue is a non-issue, as far as I'm concerned. Each family pays at least half of the tuition, regardless of financial aid. So, right there, it creates a disadvantage. That is a matter of a family's willingness to pay. Some can do so easily, many more sacrifice many things to make it happen.

All schools have the same rules. Some will have advantages. And advantages are what everyone works for. There's nothing unfair about that.

JCPS and the Catholic High schools both have showcases where each school is represented, and student and faculty are there to answer questions and hand out information.

 

In addition, each of the Catholic schools have an open house, and I believe the public high schools do as well.

 

As far as my experience, they're directly comparable.

When those advantages leave the playing field and creep into the administration and policies the kids can no longer decide the outcome. I agree some kids will be better than others. Coaches will do a better job than others. This goes way beyond that.
