Best Technical Story

Featured Replies

One of my all time favorites is a Jimmy V story.

He asked the official if he could get a technical for what he was thinking. The referee replied with of course not Coach. I cant T you up for your thoughts.

Jimmy V said well good then because I think you suck.

:laugh: Now that made my day.

I politely asked an official if I could ask a question. When she said yes,

I asked her for directions to the nearest hospital so that I could get my players checked afterwards for the beatings they were taking and she was allowing to happen.

Never raised my voice.

I actually should have been thrown out of the game. Cause when she did call the technical, than in one of my loudest voices (and that can be loud) I told her that was the first right call she had gotten right all morning.

I deserved to be ejected at that point.

Long ago I had a coach tell me the same thing....he did hit the bus before his team did..... I always hated giving both technicals...but just like Tom Cruise said in "Risky Business"......"Sometimes you just have to say what the **heck**"!

A funny story, my son's AAU coach who can get pretty fiery on the bench said he only had 2 Technical fouls in his 15 to 20+ years of coaching. This was before a game they were playing out at SOAS. I thought, how in the world can he go this long without getting one. Sure enough that game he got 2 and was ejected. I laughed and told him he doubled his total in one day. He laughed and to this day he still says he only has 2 technical fouls.

I was an assistant for a youth basketball team and the head coach couldn’t make a tournament game so I had to play head coach, which I have never done before. The game was in Ohio and in the first 5 minutes of the game I was very "vocal" with the referee. During a timeout he came over to me and said he wasn’t going to put up with me all night. I told him “If you don’t want to put up with me you applied for the wrong job, you should be serving snow cones at the concession stand”. I got a T. Latter in the game we were down by around 20 points. The ref came over and said “Who should be serving the snow cones now?” I never coached again.

Former ref Mickey Crowley recalls a lesser-known tech called against Bobby Knight when Knight coached the U.S. national team in an exhibition game against the Soviet Union in the 1980s. Crowley says the official who called the tech asked Crowley to talk to Knight because Crowley knew him.

"Bobby says, 'Mickey, I won't say another word,' " Crowley says. "And I turn around and start to walk away and he says, 'But you've got to understand, those are communists over there. How do you guys defend those communists?'

"I say, 'Hey, Bobby, slow down, you're going to start World War III.' And he says, 'Good. I've got 12 hostages right here.' "

Barbara Jacobs says she was called for one technical foul in 15 seasons as coach of the Syracuse women's team. It was a doozy.

The Orange were playing at Pittsburgh in the mid-1980s when — well, let her tell it:

"I always wore high heel pumps and a nice dress or skirt for games. My guard was going down the floor and she got tripped by a defender and fell to the floor, but the official called traveling. And I tried to explain to the official that she got tripped by using a kick motion with my foot.

"And as I'm doing that my shoe flew off and it just kind of flew in the air. I remember thinking, come back. It was like the whole world stopped and it was flying in the air and, sure enough, it hit the official right in her butt. And she turned around and very calmly gave me a technical."

It got worse. "Then," Jacobs says, "she made me go out on the court and pick up my shoe. It was a long walk."

The ironic thing is these days Jacobs is an assistant commissioner of the Big East in charge of women's basketball officiating. For a few years, she was the boss of Phyllis Deveney, the ref who called that technical.

Former West Virginia coach John Beilein says he got a technical during halftime when he was coaching Richmond in the late 1990s at William & Mary. The referees overheard him complain about them as he was talking to his assistants outside his locker room.

"Not only did I get a 'T,' " Beilein says, "but the guy blew his whistle — in the hallway."

Best Technical story I ever heard involved a young official and an older official. The younger official was blowing calls and no where to be found on places where calls should be made. The coach calls a timeout and asks to speak to one of the ref's and of course the older official comes over. The coach tells him that the game is getting rough and someone needs to blow the whistle. The ref replies by saying, "The young guy with me isn't were he needs to be to make some calls and it's not his fault." The Coach replies, "Well that is your place to step in and take over as the veteran official." The Ref then says, "Well I can't do that I don't want to step on his toes." The Coach then says, "Well if that's how you feel, but if I had a size 17 boot I would've already stomped all of every toe he has."

Not sure about the year, but I think it was Dan Sullivan's last year at Campbell County. Camels were at Pendleton County and not getting any calls. I think Sullivan gets a T in the first half. All coaches are to ride the bench. Then in the second half Gross gets a techincal, and to top it all off offical makes a terrible call in the last minutes of the game and Ballinger tosses his clip board in the air. There goes T number 3 and Sullivan is ejected due to assistants. I think all the coaches were sent out except the JV coach that was not on the bench. The JV coach finishes the game and has to coach the next game with the Freshman coach.

Haha. I remember that game. It was in December of 2001. Danny Sullivan's 2nd to last year.

How many people have gotten a team a technical as a fan, I know I have....:argue:

Details?

I will be checking this thread on a regular basis over the next day or two.:thumb:

Saw a coach get a T at Greenup County a couple of years ago by telling the official, "This is a circus and you're the court jester."

Also, a few years back same coach tells a female official that the call she just made was ludicrous. She quickly turned around and asked, "What did you call me?" He replied, "I said that was ludicrous." He was then given his T.

Received a technical on a cheerleader late in a close game that we ended up losing. How many have ever seen that one?
