Sometimes missing "open shots" is a result of having to work so hard against a team that plays constant pressure defense. That wears on you physically and mentally which can result in errant shots. Defense is not simply at the time of the shot. Good defense doesn't let you do what you want offensively without having to expend energy. I think that's what you saw in this game. Simply put, the continual effort on the defensive end won the game for CCH against a potent offense.

 

Their constant pressure must have wore on Elliott before the game started then because the first quarter and some of the second was the worst shooting stint and where they got behind.

Elliott was the only team in the winners bracket(8 teams) that played from 4:30 on yesterday that didn't get a bye!!!!

Good defense and taking care of the ball wins games. CovCath did both. Their ranking is well deserved. Elliott will learn from this game and the tournament experience will only help them down the road.

I thought it was a very respectable tournament for the Lions of Elliot County. I also think they will learn from this experience and adjust in the future for more playing time for their bench. They are a very fun team to watch and I think they represented the 16th region well. Good luck to them the rest of the season.

I think they will take this for a learning experience. And to answer the question about the bench , They have a descent bench, the sixth and seventh man are good players the eighth man is a good big man and the ninth and tenth man are good all around players. I meant nothing negative against Rowan in my comment. That just happens to be the next game that Elliott plays. And yes, I do feel that their shots will start falling again in this game. Their shots fall most of the time and why would I feel that they won't against Rowan? I'm a huge Elliott fan, so please don't take this comment as a negative comment against Rowan County. Good luck to both teams.

Michael Grimes is an all-timer at CCH when it comes to playing D. He said that the Ferguson kid from EC is near the top when it comes to having to defend. That's a strong compliment.

Maile played. Had a double double actually, and from listening to the broadcast, he played very well down the stretch.

While Maile is indeed a very, very good Basketball player, Baseball is indeed his real game. He was the Player of the Year in the Ninth Region as a Sophomore and I know for a fact that both UK and UofL have offered a full ride to him, to play baseball for them. IMO Grimes is CovCath best defender, and did as good of a job as could be done against a player who can just light up the scoreboard. Ferguson is indeed a great scorer (player) and he is going to get his points, but CovCath held the other EC players to under double figures and below their averages.

 

As I have said before, good luck to EC and I really am looking forward to seeing them play again in the Sweet Sixteen....
