Does EC always play with a short bench?

 

That does surprise me, they have a few other very good players who can come in at any time and not skip a beat, such as Maynard who has unlimited range. Someone stated on another thread about EC not substituting much may lead to them being tired after a day or two, I wasn't at the game so I am not sure what happened.

Elliott Co. used their bench more tonight than I have seen so far this year. If that tells you anything.

8 players played quality minutes tonight, the shots just didnt fall for Elliott County.

Looks like StickerMann, qryche and Theoldguy had this one nailed based on their observations in the predictions thread. I still think Elliott is the class of the 16th by far, but they finally came up against a team that was able to force its will on EC. CovCath is a legitimate top 10 (or maybe even a little better) team right now.

I was at the game tonight, and I watched EC play all three games at LexCath. The only difference in tonights game was the "D" of CovCath compared to the other games. Think what you want to, but the "D" of CovCath and CovCath ability to not turn over the ball to EC for easy baskets, was the difference tonight. Do you really think that if you were playing one of the teams you put up 100 on from the 16th you would have been so off in your shooting? Come on sir, is it so tough to say you got beat by a very good team tonight, who plays a very tough brand of "D" night after night, and that just might had a part in your off night shooting? Look at the quality of the teams CovCath has played so far, and look at how few points they have given up to them.

 

CovCath "D" has given up the following.....

 

LexCath scored 57 in a loss

St. Henry scored 63 in a loss

Mason scored 66 in a win over CovCath at the Fieldhouse

Conner 53 in a loss

Ryle scored 53 in a loss

Cin Oak Hills 33 in a loss BTW per MaxPreps they are a top 25 Ohio team

Lafayette scored 65 in a loss in OT

Lou St. X scored 39 in a loss

Franklin Co. scored 51 in a loss

Elliott Co scored 62 in a loss

 

So CovCath has given up an average of 54.2 points per game against I might add one of the toughest schedule in the Commonwealth, but it had of course no effect on Elliott. Okay believe what you want but, don't try selling it to knowledgeable basketball fans.....

Those are some impressive numbers against some really good teams.

I was at the game also and then went home and watched it twice on video! CC does have good "D" but Elliott had plenty enough OPEN and that does mean OPEN(hand of defender at least two feet from hands or face) looks in first half to have been tied or ahead at the half "but" they just didnt fall. They also had plenty of looks that were heavily contested and they didnt fall either(naturally) Point is noone gets on every shot and Elliott normally hits those that are open(even though it was fewer looks against CC)

but they didnt hit the OPEN ones tonight which contributed to an overall bad shooting night.

Good post, sportsfan. Cov Cath's defense did play alot into alot of the shots Elliott County missed, but some shots were wide open and they just couldnt knock them down. Congrats to Cov Cath on the win, they earned it. Good luck the rest of the season.

Elliott is better than they played tonight. The heart was there for them, but the shots just weren't falling. Ferguson came out playing with a purpose in the second half and showed why he is a great player. The younger Knipp could stand to play with a little more heart, but it must be hard playing with a group that has started so many games together. Plus he's a freshman dealing with being ranked nationally, that must be hard to deal with at such a young age. I'm sure he'll pick it up going forward, he's such a talent. When he plays on all out, like the rest of the team, they will be hard to beat. Every good team needs a loss to figure out what they are doing wrong. I can't wait to see Elliott bounce back against Rowan on the Jan. 4th. I'm sure they will be better for this experience.

This team is a great team. One off night, doesn't mean anything. They normally make those shots.

I had a feeling CovCath wasnt going to let EC dictate the tempo in this one. They are too experienced and solid on defense to just come in and let a highly explosive team run up and down on em. Shover really stepped up last night and he showed that he can hang with the big dogs. Grimes might be the most underrated player in the 9th Region. 50% shooting from the field, had to man up vs. Ferguson who is probably the best scorer in the state. Maile is a gamer no doubt, he was solid with a double/double. Bondick who I like the best, not saying he is the best player but the way he plays is enjoyable. He gives you stats in 3 different areas and also is a very good defender.

Cov Cath will have their hands full with Mason tonight but taking a couple losses to the Royals during the season might not be a bad thing. If they were to meet down the road in the Sweet 16 its verrrrrry tough to beat a team 3 times in a season. If they split by CCH winning tonight, then it will be one of the best matchups if they were to both advance and meet at Rupp.

 

Congrats to both teams, EC will be there in March, no doubt about it. CCH was my 9th favorite from the beginning and they are showing why with big wins over quality opponents like EC and Lex CAth.

Half of those teams have losing records.

Lafayette has been particularly awful.

Lou. St. Xavier is not so good either.

The Elliott County win is solid, but realistically many of their wins have been run up against 16th Region teams, and the 16th Region is probably one of the worst in the state.

 

Still a pretty solid schedule.

The wins over LexCath, Oak Hills, and Elliott are nice wins...even throw in a decent one against Franklin.
