CovCath Stats of the game....

I find myself disappointed. I have grown fond of this Elliott Co. team. I agree that this loss could prove beneficial down the road.

EC not scoring as many points as they have had all season long was due(IMO) to the following reasons:

 

1. EC has not seen a team that plays "D" the way CovCath does. CovCath plays "D" likes EC plays the "O" and that is none stop and from end to end.

 

2. EC didn't get the easy baskets by forcing TO's like I have seen them do in earlier games. CovCath just didn't turn the ball over and played smart.

 

3. CovCath made shots from all over the floor and the bench again helped the Colonels stay fresh....

 

4. Finally EC had to be tired, but this is the choice of the Head Coach of EC. Why he didn't rest his players some in their first round blowout puzzled me and some of the EC fans I spoke to....

 

Congrats to the EC players and fans......It was a fun night, and those who watched it at LexCath got more than their moneys worth. I will be watching from afar to see how EC does, and I for one wouldn't want to play EC in the state tourney until the third round....

I wasn't at the game, but I listened very closely. It sounded to me like Elliott had the shots to win the game, but once they started falling it was too hard to get over the hump. In other words, it sounded to me like Elliott didn't have the legs. When they made a little push in the 3rd quarter, it was just too much to make a comeback and hold it.

Sounds like Elliott's coach needs to utilize his bench more in blowouts, and he's and plenty of opportunities. Sometimes facing a good "D" for a change will also make those "legs tired"? Shots are a lot harder with a hand in your face vs. playing horse against teams that don't D-It Up!! Elliott will be much better for their 5/3rd experience.

IMO, the CovCath "D" had something to do with it....

Good win for Cov. Cath. Elliott Co. was only about 36 points off their average.

That's why you play good teams!! Again, this experience will help Elliott down the road!!

Good win for Cov. Cath. Coach Listerman always has his guys prepared for the big ones. Don't underestimate them against Mason Co., it's hard to beat a Coach Listerman team twice in one season. He will have them ready and focused. They have the potential to bring the State Championship back to Northern Kentucky in March.

Keith Center probably played 6-7 minutes in crucial parts of the game. IMO, thats quality minutes. And I am not trying to take anything away from Cov Cath, great defensive effort but Elliott Co did have alot of open shots that didnt fall that they normally hit.

Colonels stave off Elliott charge

 

Covington Catholic doesn't have the reputation of being an up-tempo basketball team, but the Colonels showed they can run with the best of them by racing past run-and-gun Elliott County 76-62 in the Lexington Catholic Holiday Classic quarterfinals on Friday.

 

"I think we surprised some people," said Colonels point guard Mitch Shover, who had 21 points, five assists, three steals and two tired legs.

"Elliott County is so fast, but I think we showed we're fast, too. We're good on the (fast) break, too."

 

Defending 16th Region champ Elliott County came into the game 10-0 and averaging 95 points. But the Lions' roar was quieted somewhat by CovCath's body-up defense and strong rebounding.

If Elliott wants to make some noise at Rupp this year, they better get their bench some playing time. Blowing people out with your starters may be fun, but building a bench for state is needed. Averaging 90 points a game against lesser talented teams in this region is nothing if they dont make some noise at state.

Agree with many of the comments. CovCath plays defense at a different level than what EC has faced all season. Credit to Elliott to get real close, but CovCath made the plays down the stretch.
