Class A favorites for 2008-2009

You may be right, but, I still contend Hazard was considerably better than Raceland. You have to consider more than just Racelands close loss and the Hazard playoff loss.. Raceland also got blown out by LCA and Hazard also defeated LCA handily in the regular season.. Neither Racelands nor Hazards schedule would knock your socks off, but, in looking at both, I think they were about even and Hazard had the better record and was ranked considerably higher in every poll throughout the year, so, I'm not the only one who would feel that way. Since they didnt play each other, we'll never know for sure, but, imo, if they would have, I feel Hazard would have beat then by 2-3 TDs..

I will have to disagree with you there. Raceland played one hard schedule including Russell, Ashland (whose wins and loses might not show it but was a very good team who was quite bigger then them), and 3 other teams that were at least 2 classes bigger then them. As for Raceland's first lose to LCA they were missing 9 starters and were pretty much playing their JV team. I feel a 2-3 td win is very generous.

One Hard schedule? Russell was the only above average team they played, and even they were down in comparison to the last couple of years. Ashland, albeit, a bigger school, was very, very down this year and W and E Carter were under .500 between them. Neither were terrible, but, hardly what I would call above average. And Raceland lost to both. Hazard played Letcher Central, which I would say is about even with Russell, in addition to Lynn Camp, Cumberland, Clay Co, all of whom I'd say were stronger than E or W Carter & played LCA in a nondistrict game. To me, Hazards was a little tougher overall and they went through it unscathed. I think 2-3 TDs is about right..

I assume you mean beaten in the playoffs. Am I correct?

yes Bluto, that is correct. I loved seeing you in Louisville. Hope to see you again next year

I, honestly, think that the 1A field is going to be very close at the top next season. I'm not putting anyone down, conversely, I am complementing several programs. Beechwood was very good this year, Guru said in the preseason that he thought this might be the best team in Beechwood history. With Beechwood being very good they played to a three point margin of victory against LCA in the championship game.

LCA was very good this year, they loose a couple of starters, but return most of the starters on offense and defense. LCA only beat Raceland in the district championship game by two points, the only game that was less then 20 points for for LCA in the playoffs heading into the championship game.

Raceland looses five starting positions, two on offense - one OL, and one WR, three on defense - one DL, one LB, and one DB. Raceland will be strong and experienced.

Beechwood did not have any competition in the playoffs, winning every round by 35 points, until the championship game. But, with the losses on Beechwood's roster and Mayfield returning most of their players, the margin may be closer.

Other then LCA and Raceland, the only team that I see making a strong run from the east would be Hazard. Hazard returns most of their starters.

So, from the western bracket I see:

1. Beechwood

2. Mayfield

3. Frankfort

From the eastern bracket I see:

1. LCA

2. Raceland

3. Hazard

Over all I think is looks something like:

1. Beechwood

2. LCA

3. Raceland

4. Hazard

5. Mayfield

6. Frankfort

After seeing Beechwood severel times this year, and having seen and played against other great Beechwood teams in the past. This was no where close to near the best Beechwood team ever IMO...

The Guru's assertion was recanted during the season.

I'm pretty sure the Guru backed off of his statement a bit.

If he did, then that is my fault. I just remember Guru talking in the preseason about them being the best. I may have forgotten the recanting.
Yeah, i forgot about those two. Have you heard anything about the Head Coaching job yet? I haven't heard anything else new about it.

I'm expecting a decision in January.

I talked to Crittenden's coach and he told me that they have every starter coming back. Both of the running backs were sophomores.

:ylsuper: However I thought they lost 1 or 2 starters, but they should be REALLY tough next year

District 1 should be pretty strong next year, as I think Fulton City will be solid again. They lose a couple of very talented backs but they have the core of there line returning and quite a bit on the defensive side. They always seem to have 2-3 very good athletes coming through. I'm sure they'll have a few coming up through the lower classes again. Ballard Memorial was also very young this year and should be improved in 08. Mayfield will once again be solid and Crittenden should be good. Fulton Co will likely bring up the rear in 08 as there #s have been really down and there program is barely staying afloat.

I think they are trying to do it this year. Not sure but I think they plan to vote on it this spring.

I doubt that they'll mess with the 6 classes this spring. The coaches definitely want to go back to the old playoff system and that may be addressed this spring, but the Supers may not agree with that for budgetary reasons. And if the Supers don't want it to change, it won't change. That you can take to the bank.

Who is the favorite to win each district? And, what teams have a chance at the upset? Please, none of the "My team is going to win and no one else matters" stuff.

CLASS 1A

District-1-1- Ballard Memorial, Crittenden County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Mayfield

District-1-2- Beth Haven, Bethlehem, Caverna, Holy Cross (Louisville), Kentucky Country Day

District-1-3- Beechwood, Bellevue, Bishop Brossart, Dayton, Ludlow

District-1-4- Bracken County, Eminence, Frankfort, Gallatin County, Trimble County

District-1-5- Fairview, Lexington Christian, Nicholas County, Paris, Raceland

District-1-6- Campbellsville, Clinton County, Lynn Camp, Williamsburg

District-1-7- Harlan, Hazard, Jenkins, Pineville

District-1-8- Allen Central, Betsy Layne, Paintsville, Phelps, Pikeville, South Floyd

My list:

District 1-1............Favorite: Mayfield....................Upset: Fulton City

District 1-2............Favorite: Holy Cross.................Upset: Bethlehem

District 1-3............Favorite: Beechwood................Upset: Dayton

District 1-4............Favorite: Frankfort...................Upset: Trimble Co.

District 1-5............Favorite: LCA..........................Upset: Raceland

District 1-6............Favorite: Campbellsville.............Upset: Williamsburg

District 1-7............Favorite: Hazard......................Upset: Lynn Camp

District 1-8............Favorite: Pikeville.....................Upset: Paintsville

District 1, Mayfield and Crittenden appear to be neck and neck and with all that CC has returning, they POSSIBLY could be considered the fave

Lynn Camp is in District 1-6 not District 1-7. Pineville could be the pick for the Upset in District 1-7.

Campbellsville returns 9 starters on both sides of the ball. Should be interesting.

I believe Campbellsville should be favored to win their district next year, with Williamsburg close behind them. Campbellsville will return a lot of very athletic kids.

I also think Lynn Camp will be pretty good. The Wagner kid is very fast and the running back that filled in for Roskoph looked good. I believe he was a freshman.

In district 1---3, Beechwood again is the lone horse, they re-load this year with speed in stead of size, don't get me wrong they still have a huge base including Mainello, 6'5" 260 NK All Star on O line, and All State Dend HM, Miller 6'4" 250 did a great job filling in at the end of the season and throughout the playoffs, Miracle not sure on size but around 6'3" 250 who before season ending injury was showing promise. Skill positions are in great shape, Tiepel, huge talent just came in to his own last year, in a shared backfield actually out gained feature back in a ltd role, also plays DB, Joe Daniels, great 2007 even with injuries, Brady Slusher at TE and Lb was the difference maker in several games last year, including State, the only question mark is qb, still a toss up. This should anchor a base of talented kids. Dayton had a good run last year, but lose to many graduating seniors. The black and gold tigers should not lose any ground, but don't see them making any headway to give Beechwood any problems. Have not looked very closely at Ludlow who they kept or lost, I just dont know, maybe future coach can fill us in. That leaves Bishop Brossart, 2nd year program, well they have a ways to go.
