Who benefitted most under the six-class system?

Featured Replies

NewCath and or Beechwood. Both inline to win titles when one would have taken the other out in past years. All the 6 Class system has done has allowed more teams that were already winning titles, to win another.

Beechwood and NCC would have been a Class A matchup.

Highlands and LexCath a AAA matchup

They are now potentialy 4 state Champions. Add the likelyhood of another T and X matchup, and the KHSAA has effectively allowed just 1 extra team a shot at a state championship.

So the real questions are, did more kids benefit from making the playoffs when they wouldn't have in the past? Or, did more kids suffer from making the playoffs when they wouldn't have in the past?

Both, when you consider 64 more teams made the playoffs than ever have before.

Both, when you consider 64 more teams made the playoffs than ever have before.

And going full circle, I ask this about going to six classes...

What does it hurt?

Six classes never had anything to do with helping the kids. It had to do with small 4A schools in the same class with Trinity and St. X and they wanted to be in a different class so they divided into smaller classes. So instead of a Public Private Split, they go with 6 classes and fewer teams have to deal with Trinity and St. X then before.

It was decently popular in the other classes because it made it easier to win.

For everyone saying the kids then why stop at 6. Why not have 8 or 10 or 12 classes? Why not make it like t-ball and give everyone a trophy since it will give them wonderful experiences and life long memories.

I missed it .... have they always given a trophy to every kid that plays high school basketball? Since by your mentality they should have right since every team makes the playoffs?

I really don't think the problem is the amount of teams making the playoffs, I think the problem is having to play your own district again in the first two rounds. Should go back to the old system where two regions mixed it up.

Amen.

I remember a time when it was a big deal if you made the playoffs. You knew that your team worked hard and accomplished what some could not. KHSAA has taken that away from these kids. Now making the playoffs means absolutely nothing.

It still comes down to the almighty $$$$$$$$$$$. The KHSAA has not nor never will make any decision that does not benefit the bottom line. Dollars is what it will always be about.

It took 39 posts for someone to say it. The only "team" that benefits is the KHSAA. They're the one that gets 2 more games for the state tournament. I'd be willing to bet that not only will they cash in on the ticket sales, but also the advertising probably went up as well. So I bet there was no talk of watered down at the head office, I bet it was more like ching, ching, ching, ching, ching!

Who????????????

Atherton had never made the playoffs before in the school's history. In the old four class system, they still would not have.

Muhlenberg North was 0-10 and got thumped on a weekly basis. Made the playoffs in the four team district.

Dayton, Bellevue and Ludlow benefited by having NewCath and Holy Cross move up to 2A. Doubt very much that 2 of these 3 would have made it to the playoffs if those 2 teams were still in their district. I just don't think winning 1 game in your district or in some cases not winning at all should get you a spot in the playoffs.

Pretty dubious debuts. Unfortunately, six classes breeds that kind of stuff.

I disagree. If the KHSAA only wanted to make money they very easily could've implemented something similar to what they do in Ohio. Take out your expenses ONLY, and send the rest to the OHSAA. They could've said semi's only and made more money than adding two state finals, IMO...
