It is hard for me to answer a question when no question is specifically asked.

Public schools can accept out of district AND out of county students. It has happened in Jefferson County before.

In 20 years, I know of one case of a student paying tuition and living outside of Jeff. Co. attending a Jeff. Co. public school. He was a football player and was ruled ineligible by the KHSAA. I can say with near certainty that there are zero Jefferson County Public School athletes residing outside of Jefferson County. I may be wrong in the case of hockey. Hockey is very new to the area and I know they have put together teams with players from just about everywhere to give the sport a boost.

But the fact that it occurred provides us with a precedent.

Even so I know the Ram Brothers have mentioned one or two students who attended Manual who were not from Jefferson County. I don't think they were athletes but even so we are supposed to be concerned about ALL students' enrollment, right?

You live in the district? It's free, sounds like a full ride to me.

If the districts hade reciprocal agreements with each other in which the money follows the student instead of staying with the district it wouldn't matter. Which frankly makes more sense to me anyway as no child is the property of any school.

Of course you CAN, but that doesn't make it any more justified. Jefferson County Schools have open enrollment, I suppose that we ought to not allow that either then eh? They don't follow the same enrollment procedures other counties, let's ship them off with the privates.

The problem here isn't so much public/private as it is rural/urban. Something that many of us (the more rational ones anyway, there are some real kooky folks on both sides) on both sides came to agree upon long ago in this forum.

LBBC has illustrated quite effectively that in his county open enrollment would do nothing to level the playing field like it more or less has in Louisville, on account of the fact that there aren't enough schools for it to matter.

I know you made the above bold statement in jest, but that is exactly what would have to happen in the case of a public/private separation or you would have the same issue with Male, Manual, or Butler (if they ever got their coaching situation settled) dominating 6A and Central dominating 3A because of advantages other schools don't enjoy. Jefferson County would still be able to offer open enrollment because of the specialty programs unique to some schools. However, if you choose to attend a school outside of your reside area, you would need to be ineligible for participation in athletics.

As I've stated before, separation is the only way this debates goes away. This doesn't make it right but I truly can't understand why people can't see that it is the only way. Blaming the KHSAA for not enforcing the current rules is not rational. Recruiting is a legitimate and necessary means to success for a private school. Most private schools would fold without recruiting and all private schools would see a huge decrease in enrollment without recruiting. And, it is nearly impossible to ensure that this recruiting is for academic purposes only. This does not make the big private schools bad institutions that are full of cheaters. It is just an inherent difference that is negatively affecting football the most. Just ask Mark Catlett, one of the absolute best coaches in the state and one of the top mentors to young athletes, who lost his job today because he loses every year to Trinity High School.

Which is precisely what many of the Private school supporters have said for some time. The independent schools like Danville, Beechwood and Highlands have similar advantages. So the seperation would REALLY only be beneficial of it took the Independent and Open Enrollment schools as well.

Answer.....Two divisions.

4 public

2 private

Private schools will never agree to operate under the same guidelines as public. There is only one solution to the problem, that is why it will take so long for it to come about. Those in power will exhaust all options before finally conceding to only one conclusion, a split.

I want to send my child to the local private school- I must pay tuition. Even if I recive finacial aid, the package will cover no more than 50%.

I want to send my child to open enrollment school district- I might pay cost, depending on agreement with districts.

I want to send my child to local public school- I do not pay directly for those years.

You're right, they don't operate under the same guidelines. But they do when it comes to High School sports. All are under KHSAA guidelines.

Move to an open enrollment district.

:D:D:D:D:D

I'm going to use another old analogy.

Some school systems have chosen to drug test their student athletes. Without getting into the merits of drug testing, would it be kosher for those schools that do limit themselves by drug testing demand that schools that don't drug test be separated from them?

Why of course.

And those programs that don't have their own swimming pool or golf course will be demanding that those schools with their own pool and golf course be separated.

And those programs that are not willing to fund more than 2 or 3 asst football coaches will demand that those that are willing be separated.

Folks, this logic of separating schools with advantages can go on and on. I personally think its unfair that in some counties there is only one high school, as that high school gets every student, every athlete in the entire county. As opposed to high schools in the urban areas that have competiting high schools out the front and back doors draining students away. Its unfair that those rural county schools get all the students in their county wide district with little or no competition from near by school districts to drain away some of those students.

And not permitting out of district students to participate in athletics is not the answer. If that rule goes into place, you will see people simply move into the district that they want their kids to attend so they are no longer out of district students.

Can you explain the bolded please? I am not sure what you are saying here.

Nevermind, I should have kept reading.

Move to an open enrollment district.

You make my point. If I go to a private school I do not have to move. I want to go to Corbin. Just not the same.

It is hard for me to answer a question when no question is specifically asked.

I live out of district and want to go to Corbin for both academics and athletics. I can't afford all the tuition, there is no financial relief for me. What do I do?

Please don't talk about only covering a %.

So in essence the problem you have is that your district, and Corbin's, do not have a reciprocal agreement which allows the money to follow the student no matter which school he/she goes to. That isn't an unsurmountable private advantage, if the school districts were willing to let the money follow the student this would be a non-issue.

For what it is worth I still saw no "?" in there to indicate you were asking a question. :D

Disagree. Check out what is going on and has been going on in the girls' side of the equation for the past 10-15 years. The ONLY reason why you guys got involved in this was that it FINALLY started affecting football. Something powers-in-place cared about.

When it was only girls' athletics, they overlooked it as one of those "female" things. For someone ill informed about female athletics, they would make the bolded statement. For someone who is not, they would say it affects football 2nd to girls athletics.

You make my point. If I go to a private school I do not have to move. I want to go to Corbin. Just not the same.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but with the new transfer rules, I don't think this is correct IF the child has already been in HS.

I was told by a BOC member that if my child attended HS and played sports as a freshmen and then I wanted to transfer to a private school. I would have to have a legal change of address or they would have to sit out a year. That a transfer was only legal with a legal change of address. I could not stay in my same house and switch from a public to a private school (or vice versa) without losing a year of eligibility.

Which is precisely what many of the Private school supporters have said for some time. The independent schools like Danville, Beechwood and Highlands have similar advantages. So the seperation would REALLY only be beneficial of it took the Independent and Open Enrollment schools as well.

The bolded sounds like a good idea. :sssh::D:p:thumb:;)

I really don't blame private schools for the fight they put up. If I had this kind of advantaqge I would hang on to it as long as I could.

I honestly can't believe that some of you refuse to admitt that there is even an advantage.

I'm new to this conversation and board, but old to the game of football, I don't want to go in circles or repeat what has already been said. So like I said in another post, as we all wait for a college playoff system, I too will wait for this split and do everything in my power to help it. Which is not much. I do believe that it will happen. As we look to the weekend good luck to all the teams. Public and Private
