Too institutionally different

Both these schools get a large number of applicants, I doubt if they turned away everyone outside of Jefferson Co that they would have any trouble filling those spots.

You would be wrong. Trinity, and I think the same is true of X, doesn't turn away students.

Lost in those number Bluegrass put up is another point I've always found interesting.

Briefly - In Louisville ONLY

Parochial enrollment - est 12,505 (12,305 + est 200 for new school St Mary)

Catholic HS enrollment - 6,014

Where did the other 6,491 students go? Unlikely to another private, which cost more. Very likely to a public, which cost nothing. My friends who have done this call it "found money"

Anyway, this is why any proposals that have been put forward actually HURT public schools more than help. These 6,491 will be penalized, (sit out for a year) which will diminish the public programs even further. I don't think people realize the numbers involved here.

This obviously applies more to Louisville than a rural school which is a whole different ballgame.

Are the demographics of X's and T's student population made public? If so, where can I find the % of students residing outside Jefferson County. This would be very interesting to see and would shed some light on just how much of an advantage it is to be able to enroll students from the surrounding counties.

Mike Glaser, Head Football coach at X, released to the KY Football Coaches list serve, a breakdown of all football players at St X.- if they lived in or outside of Jeff Co, if they were Catholic, ect. It was about three years ago when this debate was really hot. Out of over 150 total players that particular year, if I remember right, maybe 5 or 6 were from outside the county.

One of the points that has been made in this thread and I believe needs to be pointed out is the claim that only about 50% of a person's tuition, at most, is paid through financial aid.

This leads to the belief among those not involved with private schools that private schools are exclusive, at best, and elitists, at worst.

There are many, many, many families that could not afford the cost of tuition at a private school or a school outside their district even at a cost of 50%. Thus, that is NOT and never will be an option for them.

So, they are left to stay and play at their district's public school while they see others attending the private school and meeting success because other athletes like them are pooling at that private school.

In fairness to that stat, it is misleading. How many rural counties would it take to match the population of Jefferson County. St. X or Trinity or Manual or whomever can draw just from within Jefferson County and be able to field one of the best teams in the state.

So, while that at first glance sounds great, it is not as great as it first appears.

Which brings up the point about KY's small county size and large county number. I'm not sure why they did it that way, and it will never change now, but there are simply too many counties.

LBBC, once agian you hit the nail on the head with your response. Pendelton Co., or Wayne Co., Ohio Co., ect. couldn't match the talent pool as Jefferson Co. can do; which further illustrates the divide is more Rural/Urban, than Public/Private, or Open Enrollement/Closed Enrollment.

BTW, hearing some rumors from other Coaches around the Football title game--- Some of the biggest supporters in bringing up Seperation were guys like Jim McKee from Scott Co., and a guy from Meade Co. and a couple of others very involved in football in the state. Apparently, they and many who are with them, are willing to back down from Seperation, and anything Public/Private for now, IF St.X and Trinity are guarenteed to always be on the same side of the bracket in the playoffs, and never agian be able to meet each other in the State Finals. (Which I agree with, but guess what--T and X have only played each other 4 times in the State Finals counting tonight, I think)

Not true. X and Trinity are not the only private schools out there. Alot of complaints come from Lexington. Complaints come from everytime a private school pops up that wants a football championship they can go and get one.

Pretty insulting to the kids and coaches all over the state that busted thier butts and worked as hard as they possibly could all year long, win or loose. Being a Public or Private school gives you no birthright to win. You must put in the work to get there and win.

Just so I am clear on your position. You feel Privates have an unfair advantage over Publics correct? What is that advantage? Is it being able to draw from outside the county? I just want to understand so I don't put words in your mouth, or unfairly critisize you for a view you don't hold.

All the work in the world won't win a state championship game without the athletes to get done. I believe that all the teams work as hard as they can. There is no secret formula that these coaches have. They have athletes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No boundries.

Financial aid

Recruiting, but don't say it out loud. And please don't say if you have info or proof take to KHSAA. Just to satisfy all, lets say easier to recruit.

Who do you say is doing the recruiting? Parents? Players? Coaches? Alum?

So all these coaches didn't watch a lick of film. They didn't spend hours away from thier families puting together game plans and scouting reports. The kids didn't practice, and put in hours upon hours of work in the weightroom.

Not agianst KHSAA rules. Decided at the local level. And if you think that Catholic schools, just for example, can get any kid from anywhere to enroll at that school you are wrong. Each Catholic High School is limited to the particular Dioscese they are located in. That is a boundary. Is it bigger than Bell Co. Yes, but what's stopping Bell Co. from taking kids out of district if they don't already. Now, would open enrollment help out Bell Co. that much; probably not, but is that the fault of the Private Schools?

Financial aid

Read through the threads. Normal School and Property taxes are paid to give everyone a free Public Education. You must pay this, and extra tuition to attend a Private School, some of which are very expensive. Finanical Aid is avaliable to all regardless of being an athlete or not. No more than 50% is avaliable for anyone.

Recruiting,

Let's say you mean recruit your own hallways. You should. If Dudley Hilton was not the coach at Bell, there would be some players on the team that wouldn't play, and that goes for any other school with a great Head Coach.

Do Private Schools recruit students? Yes. They must in order to financially survive. But that recruting is not aimed at athletes and cannot be athletic in nature. Example, an Open house is allowed to have displays and information about athletics, but it must be just a part of the entire student experience.

So if I rob your house, would you post it on BGP and not call the Police?

'Nuff said.

This blanket response makes me laugh.

You have not said that it is not an advantage. Just trying to justify it. My favorite responses are, it only covers a portion of the cost. Not against the KHSAA rules, and if you have proof take it to the KHSAA.

There will be a split. No one will back off.

Did you hear about the so called, "Super CLass" that was discussed this weekend?

Everyday we get closer and it's folks like you, that will not accept that there is a problem, that only help the cause. So I say , thank you.;)

;)

KHSAA is not the police. They have not policed anything in years.
