Letcher is a program on the rise and while not ready yet to pull off a win against a team the caliber of Highlands, I think they can be competitive and gain a lot from the experience.

 

I made my first and only trip to Letcher County High last season and was really impressed with their facilities. A stadium carved into the side of the mountain gave it sort of an amphitheater effect. Artificial turf and a Diamond Vision scoreboard complete with instant replay added to the effect. This is not what one would expect to find after driving through the county to get there. I really wish the home teams were reversed, it would have been an eye opening trip for the Highlands folks. A few years down the road may find this to be good rivalry.

 

I have to ask. Do they use live ammo in the cannon?

 

 

 

Of course. It is a pain picking the cannon balls up outta the woods! Thats why HHS only plays 3 regular season games a year, saving all the ammo for the four game homestand at the end of the season!!:thumb:

Not the same without the rebounding echo from the building. It's always fun to watch the visiting fans in attendance for the first time jump when it goes off for the first time. I’ve been going to the games forever and I still get a kick out of it when they get jump. It's time to move it back down.

 

Where the cannon use to sit is now a new building. There really isn't a safe place to put it around the field. I'll take the cannon on the roof over no cannon at all.:thumb:

 

Besides, now it can be heard much clearer all over town. If you don't go to the game you will at least know how many touchdowns Highlands will have.

As Henry mentioned, while the cannon on the roof doesn't have the same "feel" sitting in the stands, its at a much safer spot on the roof. With the renovated high school sitting closer to the side lines, the cannon had to be moved in the endzone. That created some safety concerns so the decision was made to put it on the roof. OK, so I understand the whole safer issue. But...at least elevate it on the roof so that it can be pointed more toward the crowd. The lack of punch is pretty pathetic.

So I just watched the replay of LCC vs. Clay County on television tonight:

1. LCC QB Charlie Banks will impress Highlands fans, the kid has the heart of a lion, isn't afraid to lower his shoulder and get the first down, and above all else reads the field well and hits the open receiver. From the first time I saw this kid til now, he has to be one of the most improved players I have seen in along time.

 

2. I can only imagine how excited a community that hasn't seen this success in quite abit of time on the football field must be, Coach Howard really has this team turned around and they look like a better team when ti coems to the small things, the extra wiggle the ball carriers have, the way they set up blocks, etc... this may not be pretty for the Cougars Friday, but above all else it is a major step in the right direction for the program.

 

3. Highlands may very well put 100 points up on LCC's defense... Clay County's offense by and large didn't really impress me , but they carved up the Cougars. Highlands will be bigger, faster, stronger, more skilled, and better coached than Clay County.

 

I will go on record with the prediciton of 56-20 Highlands... with probably most if not all of LCC's points coming late.

I'll tell ya this..I read earlier in this post if PCC and Hazard combined....well you would have LCC. They would be much, much better than that. Keep looking down your nose at East KY. Ask Beechwood about that in the early to mid 80's. Little school called Cumberland showed the elite that it gets old after a while.

 

It's starting to get old again. In 2008 Harlan County HS gets started with the offspring of the Cawoods, Cumberlands, & Evarts from back in that day. You yankees may still win but I bet you will be much more sore when you play us than after you play the speed of up NORTH. Make no mistake about it, we will see each other down the road.
