I don't understand how anyone could equate the coach stepping down to his blaming the players.

Isn't Madison Central assistant Mark Scenters a Madison Southern graduate? He could be a good hire.

I don't know about him graduating from Madison Southern or not but I agree with him being a good hire.

I read the article and it seems like to all the older coaches I talk to anymore, they feel that today that you are dealing with a different type of kid. Many of whom want instant gratifacation for doing very little work or taking little responsibility for their actions. I coach myself and I see it and can understand the frustrations of the current kid.

 

I do not want to sound like I am bashing the kids today but I am saying that our society is no longer waiting for good things to happen, to work and to build something good. Their are many players and their parents hoping to see that magical offense or defense that will hopefully replace the idea of having to work hard in the weight room during the off season that will improve the four most important aspects that must be taught in football regardless of the scheme.

 

OFFENSE:

1) Blocking

2) Taking care of the football

DEFENSE:

3)Getting off blocks

4)Tackling

Yes he is a Southern graduate and would be a perfect fit IMO. Scenters has been on the staff at Madison Central since 2000.

I agree 100%. This would make a good thread of its own during the off season.

Mark Scenters would be a good hire for Southern. He would have pride in the school since he is a graduate and he knows what he is talking about when it comes to football. I think he definately deserves a shot at being a head coach. The plus for him would be not having to come in and replace a coach that just had a successful season. Hopefully it would be an easy adjustment because the kids would want to change things.

Hello football fans I am new to the site here and I was sorting through this thread and I thought I would shine some light on the topic. I know a lot about the situation at Southern and about Coach Doug Carter. I want to first strat by saying Doug Carter is in my opinon one the best coaches I have ever come in contact with both on the High School and College levels, and if you check around the people who truly know football and him, they will tell you the same. The man has two National Championship rings from being the Offensive Coordinator at EKU, he the winningest coach in Madison Southern history, he has more wins than any coach in Southern history. He took teams to the playoffs in 5 of his 8 years at Southern, with opposing district foes like Breathitt, Leslie, Rockcastle and Bell County. Carter has records of 10-2 (in which the only two losses came again the undefeated, Justin Haddix lead Breathitt County Bobcats and Belfry who slowed down Southern State leading Rusher Malachi Maxwell by bringing the firetrucks out and hosing down the field) and 9-3 in which one loss was to Bell County at home in which Bell's coaching staff even said they were given the game, Rockcastle and Bell both on the road were the other two losses, both losses overshadow the huge win Coach Carter had on the road in the first round of the playoffs at Johnson Central). Coach Carter has 4 kids that played for him at Southern that are playing college football right now, and one is at a little known division one team in the S.E.C. team, I can not remember the name it seems like its...TENNESSEE!!! For people to say this year's seniors were good leaders and should have won 7 to 8 games is far-fetched! The boys are all good boys and great kids, but the talent level at Southern is just not up to the level of their competition right now.

Names have been flying out there and I welcome any new names. One I have heard is Southern grad Mark Scenters who is a great coach and even better person. However, one name is being failed to mention and that is the Offensive Coordinator and Head Assistant on the staff right now at Southern, Dave Brumley. Brumley is more than qualified for the position. Coach Brumley is a Boone County native and played on the same successful teams with Shaun Alexander, so Brumley knows what its like to win. Brumley has called the plays for Southern for the past 3 years, has coached Offensive and Defensive line for the past 4 years and was the Coordinator on the 2005 team that went 9-3 and had their starting TE sign with Tennessee and the starting RB go to EKU. So, hiring within the staff would be a logical choice in my opinon.

This year there were alot of talented seniors who worked hard and the team as a whole should have had a lot better record than they did.

 

I wouldn't think they would have any assistants that could take the head coach position, but I think the head coach is recommending one of them.

 

There seemed to be a slew of problems with madison Southern this year.

 

Sounds like the coach put alot of the blame on the kids?

 

Looks to me like they need to hire someone outside the program for a fresh start.....don't be surprised to see a current, established head coach elsewhere to get this job.:sssh:

I don't know what the problem was at Southern but they were the most talented team in district for a couple of years and could get nothing going. Who else do you blame but the coach???? For what ever reason the past few years they looked like they were not coached. Not disputing Carter was a knowledgable coach or not but you have to show it on the field with what your players know and do.

Having watched Southern this year I thought they under achieved. They had some athletes but were very undisciplined. They were penalty and turnover prone. Big plays were offset with personal fouls. The game I watched they were drawn offsides several times with a hard count with the Coaches hollering watch the ball. I don't know if it was the coaches or this group of kids but I was surprised at their scores as the year went along. I am surprised they had that many seniors and had no leadership.

They were not "flat out better" they cheated and were used to it! If the game was played in a parking lot or any "LEGAL" playing field Soutern would have won. When you are playin against a team with illegal equipment (spikes that are too long) on a illegal, unsafe surface (crappy field sprayed with fire truck) the score does not reflect the two teams that are playing!

Is a coach who can teach the mindset that they can compete with the MT. VERNON (ROCKCASTLE) and BELL Co. Over the course of the last ten years there have been teams that were very capable of beating those teams, but the players and their parents don't believe that this can be accomplished...I say BULLHOCKEY. Madison Southern doesn't need better players, they just need a winning attitude, that is what will get this team competing for a regional title year in and year out. Look at Rockcastle, they were Bell's whipping boy for years, they finally beat Bell and the rest is history over the course of the last 15 that game has grown into a heated rivalry. As someone who has watched many of their games for the past ten years, this might have been the best staff they have had there, but the players just seemed like they had other priorities. I know that this is just a game and that life goes on after highschool, but what these kids need to realize is that this game is a stepping stone for what they will do the rest of there lives.
