Pat Forde UK Loss to GW was more shocking then App St beating Mich

Featured Replies

They were discussing the OJ trial last night on ESPN. They said for him to not get bound over would be as shocking as saying a UK losing to Gardner Webb. Great now UK is being compared to OJ.

You guys can paint this anyway you want....but this is way, WAY up there in the GREATEST upsets in college basketball history....that can not be avoided at this time.

No painting going on. TERRIBLE loss, but nowhere near the GREATEST upsets in college basketball history.

New coach, young team, depleted roster, completely irrelevant game.

These types of upsets happen every year in college basketball.

I mean really - yeah, this ranks right up there with Villanova over Georgetown and NC State over Houston. Come on!

Disagree. There are ONLY a handful of programs with the history of UK. And the mystic of their home arena.

So, for a team, a below mid-major team at that, that posted single digit wins last season to come in and rout, not just beat but dismantle, UK is very unusual.

If not, name the game last season that a team equilivant to GW, that posted single digit wins LAST SEASON, went into the arena of a UNC, Duke, UCLA, Kansas and dismantled them as GW did.

It's not near as shocking as App. St beating Michigan. That game single handely ruined Michigan's season. They lost to a non D-1 team, the thing that troubles me is why Would Michigan schedule that game?? why not schedule a much easier D-1 team, therefore you still get the income and you don't get as much coverage if you lose.

On the bright side Uk at least made history, they became the first ranked team to lose to Gardner Webb!

I am not buying that. The rest of the season may prove me wrong however by UK showing a lot of improvement and having a good season and the Webb does nothing. But if UK is the team about every person in America thinks they are (about a 10 loss team with not a lot of talent for the caliber of school), then I have a hard time believing this ranks as one of the tops of all time, unless your list is made up of about 500 games.

Just off the top of my head: Chaminade over UVA, Bucknell over Kansas, Hampton over Iowa State, Wright State over Michigan State ('99 when they won the title), whoever the D-II school that beat Wisconsin two years ago, Santa Clara over N. Carolina, Northwest Missouri State over Iowa, Weber State over North Carolina, etc. These were all loses to what was considered top rated teams at the time they played. UK is hardly that other than a meaningless preseason ranking.

There's an awfully lot of denial in this thread....

Its not as big as Applachian St-Michigan. That one Michigan is still a very good football team. I don't know if this UK team will get to the point where we can say this is a very good basketball team. What makes the upset so huge is the name on the jerseys. UK will become a much better team than they are now, but in order to compete in the SEC they really have to come a long ways!

Something else that is going to take a big shot because of this loss is UK's strength of schedule

Yeah.. that mystic home arena where UK has failed to beat UF or Vandy for how long?

You do realize that UF and Vandy are NOT BELOW the MID-MAJOR categories right?

This is not Trinity losing to X. This is Trinity losing to Deming.

I actually found it as a decent debate. The only denial is that this one of the top upsets of all time, which I am not buying that unless people are only reflecting upon the last 2 years of college basketball. Not a whole lot of 18% bantering. Now if UK were loaded with NBA talent (and they are not) and a preseason favorite to win it all, I would be more inclined to agree. This team is as much as a question mark as their performance the other night. The name on the jersey and the fact it was one of the first and only games going on this year have made it as newsworth as it has.

Sorry I don't buy it. These types of upsets happen every March.

VCU over Duke in 2007

George Mason over Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut in 2006

Bucknell over Kansas and Vermont over Syracuse in 2005.

Nevada over Michigan State in 2004.

These type of upsets do not happen in college football on a regular basis.

I agree with you that Forde is offbase. That loss took UM out of the national title picture. They win every game after that I don't think they make it in the BCS championship game, regardless.

But the March you indicated are teams with WINNING records and one of the best teams in their conference. GW is coming off a 9-21 season. This is not a team that will probably be in March Madness.

Now, if they are there, that changes it. But now at this moment it is a team that was probably in the bottom 40 teams in the country last year in power rankings that came into UK and spanked UK. Not beat on a last second shot. They scored the first 14 points and routed UK.
