Saw a bit in the Ky Post today about Highlands finishing the season ranked first in NKY (again), the clip went on to say the Bluebirds didn't play the second, third, or fourth ranked teams in the poll (NewCath, Boone County, Beechwood).

 

This isn't a let's bash Highlands schedule thread, by any means. But, it turns out Highlands played only three of the other nine ranked teams in NKY this year. Two of the top 10 had to play Highlands (Dixie, CovCath). Leaving Highlands with only one non-district top 10 game (Ryle).

 

I thought one of the positives of this whole six class thing, was allowing more flexibility with the schedule to create or renew local rivalries. Doesn't seem like it's happened in NKY to me. Campbell, Boone, and Simon Kenton used to have an excuse not to play the Birds (seven district games). Not so anymore, so why would the Camels schedule Mason County AND Pendleton County instead of Highlands? Why would SK play Russell when a state power is in their own backyard?

 

I know Beechwood and Boone played HHS several years starting around 2001, and I can see Beechwood not wanting this to be an annual game (the Tigers already play much larger schools in rivalry games with Dixie and CovCAth).

 

Also know the reasons why NewCath allegedly won't play Highlands. For my buck, it's just south of moronic. I just can't understand why some of these schools chose to look away from Highlands with the new freedom to schedule, especially when many chose to travel much further to play a worse team.

 

Conversly, wouldn't Highlands get more out of games with Boone County and Campbell County than say Madison Central and Hopkinsville? Certainly would generate a better gate, and save on travel. Did the Birds try to schedule local games before looking south?

 

Bottom line is when the consensus top team in NKY plays only three of the other nine top teams in the area, I think there's people missing the boat. Who are they, why are they not signing contracts, or am I missing something here?

If I recall, HHS had a pretty difficult time filling out its schedule this past year. I think that's why HHS signed the contract to play Hopkinsville, which of course makes no sense from a distance standpoint. I don't know why this was the case, but I do remember this being an issue in the offseason last year, when the schedules were being set.

This is how football sometimes goes.You don't always get the schedule you want,even if you're the one trying to fill it.You have scheduleing conflicts,distance,money from the gate,and when you have a team like HHS,some won't play you.These are the problems my step brothers run into in West Virginia,I would have to say it's the same in KY.

When asking why these games don't get played, don't point your finger at Highlands. Boone Campbell and Connor ( all 6A schools ) dropped Highlands from their schedules. These decisions have had Highlands scrambling every year since trying to fill their schedule. So lets ask the question. Boone why did you not want to play Highlands anymore? Campbell and Connor, same question. Ought to be intersting to hear everyones take on this:fire:

It's a shame that every few years or so HHS can't match up with NCC. Especially given how well these two programs have been doing recently, it would really attract a HUGE NKY crowd and would be one of the (if not the) biggest NKY games of the year.

 

Also, I am surprised a bit that Boone County doesn't want to play HHS. Now that the district games aren't all at the end of the season, a late-season game seems like a good time for these two to play (I think that, given HHS' superior off-season football program/training/conditioning, many NKY teams don't like to have to face HHS early on in the season, when this advantage really comes through).

I can think of a big reason SK (76-0) and Campbell (88-12) may not want to play Highlands. These both were a long time a go but who wants to be humiliated like that?

 

Boone should be playing Highlands. I think any program in NKY that wants to be a dominate program should play Highlands. Highlands is ranked in the top 5 in the state every year so if you want to achieve that level of success you have to expose your players to games against that calliber of opponent. Prime example Conner 03, 04.

 

I think what you see with teams scheduling Highlands is they tend to pick their spots. Conner picks them up after 2 good years, get dominated and drops them, Ryle adds them after a State run, we will see how that goes, Beechwood plays 2 years gets dominated and then goes away. Boone same story, I can only think of one team that comes back every year weather they have to play Highlands or not. May not be the best choice.

You make it sound like Highlands were afraid to play B.E. Maybe it had something to do with the open dates that Highlands were trying to fill. I'd bet Dale would love to play B E if they would give them a good challenge.

Probably because Highlands allready had that week filled. I highly doubt it was because we didn't want to play BE. I would think BE woud be a lessor opponent that lets say Louisville Central. Dale doesn't back down from anybody!!!!!

I really have to say that I am disgusted about the fact that ADULTS cannot come to terms on something that could become a historical rivalry if NCC/Highlands could play. I applaud NCC for the recent success but, how good are they really compared to a Highlands, Trinity, Male, X? Why not see if you can upset the apple cart a little and beat some upper level teams like the Birds? I am all for playing more NKY teams if they would schedule us. Here's the issue, if you don't want to play because you got blown out, then get better. Its no one's fault that you lost by that much except your own. If you want to not get pummeled, why not start an off-season program like Highlands and try to dethrone them as the KINGS of NKY. Just think, Highlands only has around 400 boys which would make them 3A, so all that hogwash about not being able to play bigger schools and fair can just go away. What's the fun in knowing you would win every game every year? Play up, get better, and stop avoiding scheduling other NKY schools. Please, lets renew the old rivalries. Would love to see Campbell Co back on schedule, and NCC. Don't care if any of the others come back. Maybe Cooper will play us.

A team I would like to see Highlands schedule is Bell Co. We use to have to play them in the playoffs and honestly they had to be some of the most controversial games we played. It would be fun to finally get to play Bell in the Fort. I don't believe that has ever happened.

Seems you write better than you read. I made a point of not pointing fingers, so to speak. And in graph three basically called out the 6A teams for not looking to play the Birds this year with more flexibility available.

 

Use your imagination all you want, this still isn't a anti-Highlands thread.
