I greatly enjoyed the regular season this year. There was a lot of excitement around this area with the renewal of the Russall/Raceland rivalry and outside of Johnson Central and Russell everyone else looked pretty even. It was fun, unpredictable, and a great regular season.

That said, it's obvious the playoffs need to be looked at. Maybe we just need a district championship and not two rounds of distrct playoffs?

Ilike the six class system but I don't like the way the playoffs are set up . I wish we could go back to the old system , where One would play four from another district and two would play three from the other district.

I agree with this! It makes the first round and in some cases the second round games very boring depending on the district. :irked:

Ok, here’s the plan for today’s politically correct, we don’t want to exclude anybody, society. For 200 member schools we have 100 classes with two teams in each class, every team will have exactly ONE playoff game which will be the state championship…and the loser gets to say they at least made it to the state final. That way no one will be left out. Sorry, just had to get some sarcasm out of my system.

Seriously, I’m not against the six class system, just the watered down playoff system where 0-10 teams get in. IMO the playoffs should reward teams that have successful seasons and give those teams a chance toward a state title. We have seen this trend in sports where society doesn’t want to exclude anyone or tell someone they are not good enough. Before long every college team will play in a bowl game if things keep the way they have. Sure that has a lot to do with money, and to some extent this new playoff format might too, but the line has to be drawn somewhere and right now I think it is too low.

I'm not sure I would call Butler's trip to post season play a reward. These boys got pummeled by St. X in regular season with many points being scored by 2nd and 3rd team players. I don't believe there is any joy in Shively over this reward - this year....

By the same token I doubt Seneca is really looking forward to their round one shellacking at Trinity.

This really bothers me about the way the playoffs are set up right now. In some districts the #4 seed has absolutely no chance to even make a game of it against the #1. It may well be the same if we paired the 4 against the 1 of another district. Even so, atleast it wouldn't be AS disheartening to the #4 as having to face the same team that destroyed them a few weeks prior. Just my view on it.

I feel for Butler and Seneca this year.

As with every other sport in the state of Kentucky, I have no problem with more teams going to the playoffs. If you're the best team in the state, these teams shouldn't affect you.

My main beef with the new system is that you have teams that are 0-10 making the playoffs because of how the districts are aligned... In no way whatsoever has an 0-10 team earned a right to play in the playoffs. JMO.

None of those things had anything to do with six classes, though.
Back to the old days w/the top two teams going to the playoffs, period..... Too many bad teams making the playoffs only to add a bad game for a good team and for what, so everyone gets a taste of the playoff atmosphere. Financially, hurts both teams in the long run.

Agreed!! It is absolutely embarassing when teams with 0-10, 1-9, records get in the playoffs. Our neighboring states HAVE to be LTAO. Come on KHSAA, fix this.

1) What do our neighboring states have to do with the discussion?

If anything, it's good to give a kid one more football game. Over a three year period that could pay off.

2) Doesn't Indiana send everyone to the playoffs?

3) Doesn't every other KHSAA sport send everyone, regardless or record? Haven't some 0-20ish basketball teams gone on to play in the district tournament?

Keep in Mind by limiting the playoffs to the top two teams in each district, you not only eliminate the 0-10 or 1-9 teams, you also eliminate the 2 vs. 3 district games. These may be rematches of regular season games that were very close and very well attended. These 2 vs. 3 matchups may prove to be some of the most exciting games in the playoffs.

For example in NKY

1A - 2 vs. 3 is Bellevue @ Dayton. I imagine that rematch will be a better game to see than the winner vs. Beechwood.

2A - 2 vs. 3 is Lloyd @ Holy Cross. Once again, more than likely a better game than the winner vs. NCC

no 3A or 4A districts

5A - 2 vs. 3 CovCath @ Dixie should be a very good game. Probably better than the winner playing at Highlands the following week.

6A - may be the exception with all 4 of those teams being pretty competitive. But doesn't the Simon Kenton @ Ryle game deserve to be played?

A good point, all of these games should turn out to be very exciting games.

I think it is too early to tell for me what this change has done. Mayfield played it usual cake walk district games in early to midseason as opposed to the past when they usually would take at least a 4 game win streak into the postseason.

This year, they had to close with a tough Fulton City team, Calloway County, Marshall County, and Caldwell County. They won 1 of those 4 games!

Is it better to play tough teams at first, then weaker/level compeition to get healthy right before playoff time and riding high on confidence?

--or--

Is it better to play your district first/middle, then face tougher teams and some adversity as you enter the playoffs?

I hated under the old system that some districts were so unequal. One team had 7 district games, while others had 3. I like being able to have more choice of games in the regular season(although some schools had more trouble than others filling thier schedule).

As for the playoffs, I hate playing in district the first two rounds.
