I think that the new format has its problems. If there are only four teams in your district you are going to the playoffs. Butler went 0-10 this year but is rewarded a trip to post season play. There are other schools who won 5 or 6 games with quality wins in 6a and their season is over. There should be less districts with more teams or only the top two teams in a district ought to move on .

Gosh, there are about 200 reasons to prefer the old four-class system to the current setup ... when I have time to write a novel, I'll do it.

I don't mind six classes. More football is better, IMHO. Maybe that will motivate more players, coaches, administrators, school boards, etc., to make the commitment to field a championship team.

I know that you are familiar with the Illinois playoff system. Here, teams play in conferences and final season records determine playoff berths and seeding. It was very foreign to me when I first came here but it seems to work.

Would it help in Kentucky to take the top 196 teams (6 classes x 32 teams), record-wise, and then split them into classes based on enrollment? That keeps 0-10 teams out of the playoffs.

For the record, I do not like the set up of playing only district teams in the frist two rounds. I would prefer to pay a sister-district in regional play like it used to be.

I like the idea of smaller districts which allows you to play more local team which builds great rivalries and establish's great fan bases. The new alignment put us in a position to play more quality programs and exposes weaknesses we had. My only recommendation would be to allow the top 2 out of each district make the playoffs due to all the 4 team districts that allow some bad football in Novemeber.

Go back to 11 game regular seasons you still have a bye week and only have the top 2 teams make the playoffs.

Or keep the current system and call it what it is a 12 game regular season game schedule with the top 4 teams in their district playing in the 11th and 12th games.

One thing for sure is that the grass should be really green at the Pizza Box(I know it is turf :D with all of watering down of the playoffs. :D

I don't look at it as more football .. I see it as watered-down football.

I prefer the district system. In Illinois, there is the potential of some smaller and mid-size schools getting squeezed record-wise because they have to play tougher schedules that often consist of bigger schools. In Kentucky, the district system assures teams of the chance to establish themselves as playoff-worthy against schools of their own size.

It's the part of the system I hate the most. With six classes, it isn't feasible to play inter-district matchups in some instances .... in Class A, District 1 is far western Kentucky and District 2 is the Louisville area.
I like the way it has opened up the opportunities to play different teams than usual. I do think, however, that the playoff scenario is just plain silly. I like the idea of the 1 and 2 teams in the district playing outside the district with the possiblity of meeting again down the line. The way it is set now if a team is in a strong district they don't have a chance to build the momentum a team might get winning playoff games against new opponents. (I guess that's why the game is played.....)

Well put!

The stupidest part is playing in your district again in the playoffs. Whichever basketball coach suggested that is an idiot. Play the other district in the playoffs and things will be much better.

I'm not sure I would call Butler's trip to post season play a reward. These boys got pummeled by St. X in regular season with many points being scored by 2nd and 3rd team players. I don't believe there is any joy in Shively over this reward - this year....

I absolute can't stand the playoff setup now with the districts playing each other again....to me it's point less. The majority and magic of the playoffs for years were the memorable road trips to places you have never been. Let the kids and communities experience that part of it. It provides excitement and more interest. In some communitities, knowing that you have to play a team that already drilled you in the regular season and being familiar with them only allows for the negativity to escalate and people have no interest in the 1st round games.

KHSAA should change the district alignment once again and also the format for the playoffs.

This was changed to cut down on spending for the schools to NOT have to travel but then what did the KHSAA do, make 6 classes, water down every district in the state and have teams make the playoffs that have no business being there. The change contradicts their move of playing w/in the same district, now everyone plays at the end of the yr.

Back in the 80's there were sub-districts and districts and such, and it was okay. Although it was not perfect, it was better than now.

BUT I do like the fact that teams were able to stiffen their schedules.

I think district teams should be seperated in the playoffs, its crazy for two of the top teams in the district to play again in second round of playoffs. I think many others feel the same way, need new blood. Schools just dont want to spend the money to play too far from home, but that is what post season football should be about, playing teams from other districts!

I agree!

Sounds like they really helped with the travel cut-down!!!

We have DISTRICTS in that include Ashland to Woodford County! and we send Bath County to Shelby Valley!

:creepy:

I'm having thoughts about the new clasifacation in KY. I just can't seem to get ovewr the fact that 1-9 or possibly 0-10 can get in

There are 5 teams that ended 0-10 that will make the playoffs. How do these teams feel about playing the team that beat them in the regular season by 60 points? I would just as soon not be playing.

Six classes is way too many. Championships are a diluted joke. A 3 class system, with no moving up or down in class would yield true State Championships and would make for some very interesting matchups.

I agree 100%. Being a playoff team should be an accomplishment. Some teams know they have made the playoffs before the season starts. I was talking to an old friend in Ohio about our playoff system. He did not believe me that we had winless teams making the playoffs. In Ohio it is possible to win all your games and not make the playoffs. I don't know that that has ever happened but it is possible.

I say go back to two teams in each district making the playoffs. Make it an accomplishment.
