Central had this game all but in the bag. The personal foul roughing the QB on them was the key to them losing. Birds were facing 4th and long had that not happened. This penalty occured on the Birds 1st TD drive. Offense did a good job coming around in the final quarter, whoeverthe kudos goe to the D for 3 and outing Central to get the ball back.

I'm glad that the Birds were able to fight down to the wire and pull out the win. I must say that it worries me to think that HHS will have to face teams able to effectively shut down their running game in the 5A playoffs.

There's a reason for that you ninny (). The o lineman have to number the defensive players to assign blocking duties. Until the defensive gets set, you can't do that.

 

Well, why doesn't the D keep moving around and thus force delay of game penalties, you ask. There is a failsafe response to that but its not for publication.

 

Go back to second guessing some other segment of the game.:jump:

 

As to the game, while I don't mean to take anything away from Central (they have a nice squad and some very nice players-but they won't beat Belfry in the championship) this was the flattest game I've seen Highlands play in a long time. Took the opening drive and move it the length of the field into their redzone and then failed to convert on short 4th and 1. Sorry folks, with our o line and running backs, that should never happen. After that drive we moved it two other times into the redzone and also failed to pick up points. We had holding calls and offside penalties stop ourselves. It just seemed that we were being very lackadaisical. And Central is too good to do that and expect to win.

 

As for the play calling, we can continue to disagree on whether we should pass more or not. All I know is that come gut check time in the 4th quarter, we ran the ball right down their throats with Hurtt, Cecil and Conner. There is no reason we could not have done that the entire game had we been more focused and eliminated the stupid penalties and mental mistakes. We let Central stay in this game for 3 quarters and it almost cost us.

 

In hindsight, this was perhaps a good game in that we accomplished several things: we learned we cannot just go through the motions and expect to beat a decent team; we had a game where we reached down inside and made a nice comeback (very proud of the Birds for that); and we finished the regular season undefeated. Lots to be happy with this morning. But there are lots to be unhappy with and I imagine film session this morning is going to be covering those items in great detail.

 

Congrats Birds but its time to get and stay focused for 5 more games.

You would be surprised who sits there and talks under thier breath. But i know you probably know that allready but lets use the Boom for a scapegoat. No problem, i can handle it and you should know by now that Boom isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Sorry if i ruffle your feathers at times!!!! That is what makes this a great site. How boring would it be if we all sat here and assumed nobody ever makes mistakes. They do!!! As far as the game you are right about our o-line and backs pretty much pounded the ball the last 9 or 10 minutes. That was impressive!!! My only argument is that there is certain situations that come during the game that a pass is the right call and the run lets just say is too predictable.

Duh!!! I allready knew that:D But when a team lines up on offense with a wideout occasionly not covered you figure out what needs to happen. But of coarse that would steer away from the gameplan. I have seen this happen to us probably 2 dozen times over the past couple of years. I for one don't we know how to take advantage of something like that. I should of been a little more clear about lining up and go. That's my point, disagree all you want. How does it go:jump:

I agree that Dale needs to put in more short passes. The running game is very predictible and makes the other team vunerable to short passes. Passing would also keep the linebackers and db's backed up which should help the running game. Also, I noticed at last night's game, that if our backs had bounced to the outside when the middle was stopped up, the field was pretty much open. Again, we were too predictible up the middle.

Congradulations, Birds on the victory, but Cov. Cath. or Dixie is waiting and hungry. They know your game plan. You're going to have to execute better than last night or your playoff run will be short lived.

The BIRDS JV played outstanding ball this morning in Park Hills. I was very impressed with the entire defensive squad on rush defense as well as pass defense... Wow, you young men rock!

 

The offense unit put on quite an arial display with the Jake Turner to Nick Buten connection. Jake had to have at least 300 yards passing. Ollie Head had an outstanding rushing effort to lead the attack by ground. Tyler Fennel was also impressive with his running abilities as well. O-line gave ample protection to the qb and opened up the running attack at will. And speaking of will, Will Bardo was throwing the ball on the sidelines prior to the start of the game. Looking good Bardolini!

 

JV team unit will be a force next year at the varsity level. Can't wait!

 

BTW, I grabbed a burger at the half at the concessions stand on the Cov Cath side of the field. You won't believe this - but the guy with the cigar was back serving up burgers with a smile. He must have the best kept secret in Park HIlls. :eek:

As you say you know its only JV, the senior class was the 1st frosh class that started the undefeated season run in 04. I Know it was only frosh but yes its going to be fun the few years in Ft Thomas:dancingpa

HHS played flat for 3 1/3 quarters of the game. (For some reason I was flat before the game too) Fortunately for them, they're conditioned well enough to blow people off the ball for the entire game, not just part of it. Was impressed with Cental's defensive line. They did some things to the HHS running game that no one has done.

 

Good to see no panic out of the Birds. Kept their composure and very workman like. After the small 'rucus' by Central's sidelines, I looked at the people with me and said, "Uh oh, don't wake a sleeping giant." I believe the Birds held then scored 21 unanswered...

 

10-0 is a wonderful accomplishment but you all know that's not the ultimate goal...
