If your SOS is not in the top 20 should you play for a national championship?

Featured Replies

I say no. Some of the BCS conferences are pretty week and I don't think just because you win one of those it should make eligible. It would force some of these schools with cupcake nonconference schedules to step up and at least play one good team. If your conference isn't strong enough to get you in the top twenty then do what you need to do.

I would go as low as you need to have at least a top 40 SOS. Due to the fact a team could have a hot season and deserve a chance just not be in toughest conference. I think if your SOS is top 40 any you are in position to play for an NC then you should get to. But no lower than 40.

Currently UK's SOS rank according to Sagarin is 34. The strength of schedules of teams are already considered in the computer rankings and most voters take them into account in the polls. When you consider some weak teams have difficult SOSs, limiting consideration to the top 20 would eliminate some very good teams. Playing one good team does not give you a top 20 or even top 100 SOS (Louisville ranks #103).

OK I'll agree top 20 may be a little tough.

Sure.

If you make it the top half of college football, say top 60, you are essentially eliminating any non-BCS school right away. The more the season progresses, the stronger your SOS becomes for BCS schools.

I wonder how much Louisville's disappointing season has hurt UK's SOS?

Again, I am not sure how to make it work, but to play for a national title, I believe you must be required to play at least one away game against a BCS school and another either home or away; for non-BCS schools, they should be required to play at least 2 BCS schools, one of which must be on the road (both would most likely have to be).

For discussion's sake.

The only teams that would be eligible from each conference

ACC

North Carolina

Duke

NCState

Big East

Syracuse

Big Ten

No team

Big 12

Colorado

Kansas St

Pac 10

Washington

Stanford

Washington St

Arizona

UCLA

SEC

Auburn

Tenn

LSU

Florida

I like the thought, but there's no way you could ever make a rule about it. (And top 20 is waaaaayyy too tough).

I think in the top 40-50 is good enough. You can't help if your conference were to happen to be weak or have a down year. I think if your conference is weak year in and year out, ... you should pick up at least 1 projected good team from a BCS conference.

Top 20 SOS is too high probably, but I don't think a team should go to the National championship game if they have basically played nobody or only 1 or 2 quality opponents.

Isn't Ohio State going to fall into that category this year? No tough OOC games and a down year for the Big 10?

IMO if you line up against whatever opponet each and every Sarturday, take care of business, win and are ranked #1 or #2 then .................YES, you should play for the NC if you are chosen to play in the game.

A lot of the ones that claim SOS are fans of teams that have lost OOC games that they should have easily won when others have take care of business and won.

I guess that is the teams that haven't lost to lesser teams fault  or anyones fault but themselves (teams claiming unfair)and their failures.

Like the ratings or not (and I certainly have disagreed with them at times) - that does not matter. It is what it is - at seasons end the #1 and #2 ranked teams will be playing for the national title like it or not. There imo will never be a playoff formatt like a 6-8 team playoff and all we can hope for is a plus one game in the future.

I can see some SEC schools being hurt in the ratings bc the conference is so brutally tough each week...week in and week out and I do think that say a one loss SEC team should get consideraton and be in the title game. (Like Fla. last season) and I believe that they will again.
