^ This is the one complaint that wears me out. Most of the time the players are to blame. By either not having enough talent, which is one of the things he said quite often when he took over that we didn't have enough talent to compete in the SEC. Now that he has talent look at what is happening. When you put together a game plan and go over it and over it and players don't execute as a coach you've done all you can. If I'm not mistaken the two co-ordinators are gone. You obviously don't remember Uzelack that Curry brought in and had Tim Couch running the option. I remember alot of people complaining about him throwing players under the bus, I call it honesty.

Well the senior class was mostly recruited by Brooks. I think the obvious change in coordinators have made a huge difference.

That isn't entirely true, Woodson absolutely had to be re-sold on coming to UK by Brooks once Morriss left. There were many that thought Guy leaving meant Andre' de-committing, but Brooks was able to keep the commitment firm. To not call him a Brooks recruit is a bit of a stretch.

I have heard him for years use the term 'we' didn't or 'we' did, ... but I don't hear him blaming individual players in public for losses. I do hear him go to bat for the kids and I have talked to several players, ... before they started winning that absolutely LOVE the man. I know for a fact that he refused to pull a scholarship offer from a kid who had verballed to him then blew his knee in high school only to have Brooks tell him 'when other bigtime schools came knocking, you honored your commitment to us and we are going to honor our commitment to you'.

 

As far as hiring and defending 2 bad coordinators, ... it wasn't like they were wandering the streets panhandling because noone else would hire them. LSU hired Archer as their HC and NC State hired him away from UK. The Steelers hired him as their LB's coach and seemed to like him pretty well! He gave them every opportunity to succeed and they did not, so they were replaced. The defense was getting better under Archer by the end of last season with a lot of very young players, but the move to Brown has seemed to get the defense to continue their progress. As far as Hudson, ... he is Brooks' friend and Brooks went to bat for him, ... nearly lost his job because of it, ... and Hudson fell on the sword as many friends have been known to do. I do think he kept Hudson too long, but he did promote Joker and that has worked out pretty well so far (40 pts in 4 straight games for the first time in school history).

 

Brooks is a class act who has the respect of the players and did it the right way. I suppose you would rather have Mumme who couldn't win without breaking the rules?

 

Here are the reasons I think most want him to stay.

 

1. Class act

2. Turned a horrible situation into a good one

3. Stood tall and took the slings and arrows from UK fans (and others) and deserves to realize some of the fruits of his labors

4. Recruiting is better with his staff and NO VIOLATIONS!!!

5. Players love and respect him

I just want to point out when you talk about stupid Bill Curry and Elliott Uzelak running the option play with Tim Couch, that on a critical fourth down and short play in the opener against Louisville that the option with Andre Woodson was called. Andre executed it very poorly and made a late pitch to Raphael Little who was stuffed short of the first down.

 

No one is now calling Rich Brooks and Joker Phillips dumb for running the option with their NFL style quarterback. I have always felt the criticism of the Curry staff running it only a few times with Tim Couch was uncalled for. Every quarterback on every level needs to know how to execute the option play although it might not be called often. That includes Andre Woodson, too!

My point is that Andre needs to learn to execute that play. The option is based on taking what the defense gives you, and in this case, you have a 6'5"/230 lb. quarterback and a slippery running back needing to work together to get ONE yard. I am not asking to have this play called often, but I thought it was the right call in that situation. Andre just handled it poorly.

 

My point is the option is a great short yardage call, even with an NFL pocket passing quarterback. And that coaches should not be ridiculed as being dumb for calling that simple play every once in a while. It is a very difficult play to defend if it is executed even the least bit!

So you thought Uzelack was a good co-ordinator. I had no problem with Bill Curry after all it was his players Mumme was succesful with and that Gene Stallings won a national championship with. Yes I thought it was a poor play call when Joker called it against UL. Joker doesn't call it very often, but it was basically Uzelacks base offense with the number 1 passing QB in KY high school football, so yeah I did have a problem with it.

I might also point out that Bobby Ross won the national championship at Georgia Tech with Bill Curry players.

 

As far as Elliott Uzelack goes, I think he is/was an outstanding football mind. Yes very stubborn and old school, probably to a fault. I know all of the inside scoop on Bill Curry, Tim Couch, and Elliott Uzelack situation and that is a whole other lengthy discussion.

 

The option play is one of the most important plays to have in any offense because of the numerous "options" it gives an offense. The fact that many, many teams have won championships with it, speaks for itself. I am not saying it needs to be the base offensive play, but it does need to be in the offensive arsenal.

 

You and I must just agree to disagree on calling it in the U of L game.....I thought it was a great call and that Andre poorly executed it in a critical situation.

That's the worst play call I've seen from UK since Joker took over as OC...he's done a wonderful job as OC, IMO, so he's earned the right to miss one every now and then. That option was one of those "What were you thinking?" calls...if we'd ran a HB Dive and converted and gone on to score a TD, we may have won that game going away...

 

...doesn't matter though. We won, and that's all I care about.
