Scribe's Week One Football Notebook

The first week of six-class football is in the record books as were the finishing times of some of Friday’s bowl games due to the hot weather.

Despite starting one week later than last year, several bowl games Friday didn’t kick off until after 10pm, resulting in early morning finishes.

Among the more notable scores –

· Pulaski County held off Somerset 62-50 in the Ray Correll Bowl that finished well after 2am local time. Pulaski sophomore quarterback Chris Muse rushed for 248 yards and six touchdowns and added 92 more through the air.

· Raceland got a 38-yard field goal from Jacob Sparks with no time left on the clock to beat Ashland 23-20 at Putnam Stadium despite a 21-carry, 228-yard rushing performance from Tomcat sophomore Rashard Carter.

· Trigg County beat Hopkinsville 24-17 in the Jerry Claiborne/Toyota of Hopkinsville Bowl Saturday. It was their first win over Hopkinsville in 17 career meetings that dated back to 1953. The two schools hadn’t played one another since 1979, and the closest Trigg had ever come to beating Hoptown was a 6-6 tie in 1960.

· Meade County head coach Larry Mofield could say two teams beat him Friday night. Fern Creek beat the Green Wave 19-14, but you could argue that Meade County also beat themselves. Meade was penalized for 203 yards that negated two scores. Fern Creek quarterback Bryan Hynes threw for 253 yards and two scores to give Curtis Higgins the win in his Fern Creek coaching debut.

· Three schools likely playing their final season of football each posted wins over the weekend. Cumberland routed Knott County Central 49-8; Cawood beat Harlan 12-7, and Evarts knocked off Adair County 24-14. The three schools are expected to consolidate into the new Harlan County High School next year.

· Bardstown senior Kelvin Scott rushed for 278 yards and four touchdowns to lead Bardstown past their cross-town rival Nelson County 39-14 Friday.

· Lone Oak quarterback Corey Robinson was 26-of-39 passing for 405 yards and seven touchdowns as the Purple Flash beat Union County 51-0. That was more than double points Lone Oak scored in their entire season just six years ago (19 points in an 0-10 season).

· Sheldon Clark running back Adam Dials rushed for 373 yards and six touchdowns on 38 carries as the Cardinals outscored Perry County Central 53-34.

· In a game that featured over 900 yards of offense, Graves County christened their new stadium with a 48-41 win over Fort Campbell. Graves running back Jordan McManus ran for a school record 266 yards on 19 carries and reached the end zone three times. Fort Campbell sophomore Troy Turner rushed for 210 yards on 15 carries and three scores as the Falcons overcame a 19-point third quarter deficit only to see Graves score with 38 seconds left to win it.

· Henry Clay quarterback Ryan Phillipi completed 14-of-20 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown and added 101 rushing yards and two more scores as the Blue Devils beat Warren Central 33-19.

· Josh Conner rushed for 227 yards on 19 carries and five touchdowns to lead Highlands past Ryle 49-21 Friday.

· Frankfort quarterback E.J. Fields showed why he is a legitimate candidate for Mr. Football after rushing for 181 yards on just eight carries and scored three times as Frankfort shut out Campbellsville 33-0.

· Warren East quarterback Jordan Ellis threw for 477 yards on 18-of-26 passing and five touchdowns. Jon Yates had five catches for 174 yards and four TDs in Warren East’s 47-19 win over Greenwood.

· Lexington Catholic improved to 12-0 in their season opening bowl game but may be without star running back Shane Israel, who rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Israel suffered a dislocated kneecap on a tackle and could miss 1-2 weeks. Lexington Catholic dismantled Althoff Catholic 65-28.

· Over 8,000 fans jammed into the new stadium at St. Xavier, and then sat on the edge of their seat as the Tigers withstood an upset bid from Ballard. Joe Montano scored on a 5-yard run with 2:17 left to give X an 18-14 win over the Bruins, who were playing without their star tailback Sir Weakley.

· Curtis Toole rushed for 117 yards as Atherton beat Kentucky Country Day 14-9 to end the state’s second longest losing streak at 27 games. Bourbon County, which has the state’s longest losing streak at 33 games, did not play last week and will play at Estill County Friday.

Five games to keep an eye on this weekend

· Lloyd Memorial at Beechwood – It will be interesting to see the reception former Tiger head coach Mike Yeagle gets as he leads the Lloyd Juggernauts onto the field. Of course, Yeagle needs to get healthy first after missing Lloyd’s 44-37 loss to Elizabethtown over the weekend.

· Middlesboro vs. Knox Central in the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic at Corbin – These schools are located just a few miles apart on U.S. 127 and appear to be closer on the football field after scoring impressive opening week wins. A Knox Central win could vault the Panthers into next week’s BGP Class 4A poll.

· Newport Central Catholic at Covington Catholic – An intriguing matchup of defending state champions. In a series that hasn’t been close in recent years, the ‘Breds feel like the Colonels are ripe for the picking after losing to LaSalle last week. Covington Catholic trails the all-time series 14-12 but has won the last three games by a combined score of 115-21.

· Hazard vs. Clay County – This game features two of the mountains’ best quarterback and could top 100 points before the final snap. Hazard quarterback Tyler Olinger threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more last week over Letcher County Central, while Clay County QB Zach Lewis threw for 366 yards in their 63-38 win over Lynn Camp.

· Somerset at Metcalfe County – This is the game that caused a flap in Harrodsburg over an alleged agreement to play between Somerset and Mercer County. Isn’t happening, as the Jumpers will travel to Edmonton in a battle of skill players. Should be another high-scoring affair.

According to the predictions made on BGP last week, the biggest upsets of the week were:

As usual per this author, well written and informative. Projects of this nature are time consuming. Thanks for the time, talent and effort.

BTW, Scribe, do you not see the clash of BGP's pre season number one 6A against BGP's pre season number two 5A (Trinity v. Bowling Green) as one of the "Five games to keep an eye on this weekend"?

Thanks for the compliments.

Yes, I considered that game and it probably could have been billed as 5B this week. But as the poll reflects, there aren't too many people outside of the Warren County area giving the Purples a chance. I like the Somerset/Metcalfe game for several reasons. One, there was the controversy regarding the scheduling of the game. Plus, the game features some outstanding talent at the skill positions for a pair of small schools. Both teams will get a lot of questions answered after this game.
